Chapter 28 - Chapter 26 — The Cost of Power

The pressure snapped.

Not exploded—collapsed.

Aiden felt it before he saw it, like the air itself being dragged inward. The wind reversed direction, pulling toward Isamu as if the world had chosen him as its center.

"Isamu—STOP!"

He didn't.

Isamu's foot slammed into the stone.

The ground cratered.

A shockwave tore outward, flattening loose rock, shattering spires, hurling debris into the air.

The enforcers vanished in the blast—flung like broken dolls into the cliffs.

For a heartbeat, it looked like victory.

Then Isamu screamed.

Not in rage.

In pain.

He dropped to one knee, both hands clutching his head. Blood streamed freely now, splattering the stone beneath him.

His breath came in violent gasps.

"I—can't—"

Aiden reached him in a blur.

"Look at me," Aiden said, gripping his shoulders. "Breathe."

Isamu's eyes were unfocused.

Power still leaked from him in unstable pulses—small bursts that cracked the stone beneath their feet again and again.

Aiden planted his blade into the ground to keep his balance.

The masked enforcer staggered to their feet.

Their coat was torn.

Their mask fractured.

"You crossed the threshold," they said, voice finally edged with something sharp. "You were warned."

Isamu tried to stand.

His legs gave out.

Aiden caught him.

"Back off," Aiden growled.

The enforcer raised their hand again—

—and froze.

Not by force.

By presence.

The air shifted.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Like something vast turning its attention toward the basin.

Every crack in the stone glowed faintly, as if reacting to an unseen pressure.

Aiden felt it crawl up his spine.

"This is bad," he whispered.

The enforcers slowly backed away.

Even the masked one hesitated now.

"Containment has failed," they said. "Withdrawal authorized."

One by one, they retreated—melting into the ridges like shadows swallowed by stone.

The basin fell silent.

Too silent.

Isamu collapsed fully.

Aiden lowered him gently, heart hammering.

"Hey," Aiden said quietly. "You're still here. You hear me?"

Isamu nodded weakly.

"I… pushed too far."

"Yeah," Aiden said. "You did."

A deep rumble echoed in the distance.

Not close.

Not immediate.

But real.

Aiden looked toward the horizon.

Something had felt that release.

Something important.

And it didn't like it.

He lifted Isamu onto his shoulder and started moving.

They couldn't stay.

Not anymore.

Above them, high beyond sight—

Something watched.

And remembered.
