Chapter 27 - EPILOGUE — The Horizon

The air was different here. It didn't taste of smog, metal, or the stale recycled oxygen of a bank vault. It tasted of salt, open water, and a freedom that felt almost heavy in its newness.

The small fishing vessel cut through the dark Atlantic waves, leaving the glowing, jagged teeth of the city skyline far behind. Evan stood at the stern, his silhouette a dark, steady anchor against the moonlight. His shoulder was bandaged, his face still bore the fading marks of the shipyard, but the lethal tension that had defined him for twenty years had finally started to melt away.

Rhoda walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist and leaning her head against his back. She could feel the steady, rhythmic thud of his heart—a heart that no longer beat for a dead father, but for her.

"The sun will be up in an hour," she whispered.

Evan turned in her arms, his dark eyes catching the first faint grey light of the dawn. He reached out, his thumb tracing the slight scar on her temple—a permanent reminder of the price they had paid.

"We'll be across the border by then," he said, his voice a soft, warm rumble. "Marcus has the papers waiting. A new city. New names."

Rhoda looked back at the disappearing lights of their old life. Rhoda Pierce, the quiet teller, was gone. Evan Mercer, the architect of shadows, was dead to the world.

"What's my name going to be?" she asked, a small, playful smile finally touching her lips.

Evan leaned down, his forehead resting against hers. For the first time since she had met him in that dark room beneath the earth, he let out a short, quiet laugh.

"Whatever you want it to be," he murmured, his lips ghosting over hers. "But to me... you'll always be the only thing I ever got right."

He kissed her then—not a kiss of desperation or possession, but a kiss of a beginning. As the sun finally broke over the horizon, painting the world in shades of gold and promise, the Ghost and his Key vanished into the light, leaving the shadows behind forever.
