Nora's POV
James whips his head toward me, his eyes blazing with fury. "The same bastard who sold you like a piece of meat and abandoned you to be tortured? By all means, let him walk right in."
"Remember, we agreed on no killing."
"He'll be begging for death when I finish with him."
James's fangs slide down as he reaches for the door handle.
"Hold on," I say, catching his wrist. He freezes, stepping back from the door to face me.
"He can't get past the protective barrier. It keeps the house safe from unwanted visitors, and he's definitely unwanted."
"Will it burn him alive like it did those vampires?" James asks with obvious hope.
"No, I designed it to spare humans, just in case that irritating Girl Scout and her mother come wandering down our sidewalk."
"Probably wise."
"Exactly." My pulse pounds harder with each heartbeat, and nausea rolls through my stomach. Ophelia places her hand on my shoulder.
"You holding up?"
I draw in a shaky breath and nod. "Working on it."
