When they got outside, the driver, Zimmer, refused to take them to the hospital. No matter how much Nora Ainsworth pleaded, he wouldn't agree. The sudden callousness made her realize just how cold and cruel the world could be.
She carried Mrs. Ainsworth on her back, running until she could hail a taxi to rush to the hospital.
After an examination, the doctor issued a critical condition notice and refused to admit her mother. In a panic, Nora Ainsworth dropped to her knees right in front of the doctor. 'In just a few hours, I've knelt twice... but for two different people.'
The doctor finally agreed to let them stay for a few days, but for no more than a week.
Nora Ainsworth gently stroked her mother's unconscious face, her own heart clenching in pain.
They were placed in a cramped little hospital room where a nurse set Mrs. Ainsworth up with an IV of cardiac stimulants and hemostatic medicine.
