Chapter 1 - the son of the duke is dead

Lucien Crow opened his eyes. The ceiling above him was stone, with dark wooden beams. Sunlight entered through tall windows, illuminating a wide bed with clean sheets. This wasn't a hospital. Lucien sat up slowly. His body felt lighter. Smaller. He looked down at his hands. They weren't his.

He stood and walked to the mirror. A boy stared back. Black hair. Dark eyes. Pale skin. Around twelve years old, thin but healthy. Lucien stared silently. So he was dead. That didn't surprise him. Cancer had already decided that outcome long ago. What came after death did. Reincarnation. He had read enough novels to recognize it immediately: new body, new world, medieval noble household.

Memories surfaced. Lucien Crow, second son of House Crow, minor nobles under Eyndor. Weak. Talentless. Ignored by his father. A do-nothing son who spent most of his time avoiding attention. Not a good position—but not the worst. His thoughts briefly drifted to his mother. A woman worn down by work and worry. When he got sick, she barely ate to afford the hospital bills. There was nothing he could do now.

The air in front of him distorted. A translucent blue screen appeared.

Lucien froze. A system. Just like the novels. He glanced around—nothing changed. Only he could see it. Another screen appeared.

Lucien stared. Everything important was locked. Another notice appeared:

[ NOTICE ]

Valid kills required

Lucien paused. Kills. Not training. Not talent. Kills. That confirmed one thing: this system wasn't designed for comfort. He didn't feel disgusted or excited—he simply accepted it. If killing animals or monsters unlocked power, that was the route he would take. If not, he wouldn't waste time.

Footsteps approached outside the door. Lucien immediately lay back down and closed his eyes. For now, it was better to appear weak. A useless noble son wouldn't be watched. Until the locks came off.
