Chapter 9 - Danger on the Way Home

Going to school is so easy now! Sleep at home, then continue sleeping at school. Haha, I finally feel the freedom I've been longing for.

I sleep!

I lie comfortably on the ground, concentrate, and start feeling the light elements in the air. Under their care, I gradually fall asleep. The light ball in my body already occupies about two-thirds of all my meridians. According to Teacher Xiu, my magic power is already enough to cast level 5 magic. But because I'm too young—learning too much too quickly is not good—he didn't teach me intermediate magic, saying I'll learn it when I enter the intermediate magic academy. (Magic corresponding to mages: Generally speaking, mages who can use level 1 magic are called Magic Apprentices; those who can use levels 2 and 3 are called Primary Mages; those who can use levels 4 and 5 are called Intermediate Mages; those who can use level 6 are called Advanced Mages; those who can use level 7 are called Grand Mages; those who can use level 8 are called Archmages; those who can jointly use level 9 magic are called Magisters; those who can use level 9 magic alone are the legendary Great Magisters.)

Ah! What time is it? I stretch and look at the sky outside—it's already dark. Hurry home for dinner; my stomach is growling. I skip out of the academy and head home.

After leaving Senke City, I walk along the path I take to school every day. Since I'm timid and afraid of the dark, I cast an Illumination spell with my left hand. The surrounding 30 meters are as bright as day. I wonder what delicious food Mom made today—preferably bone soup, my favorite. Thinking about the hearty dinner, I can't help smacking my lips, feeling even hungrier.

Suddenly, I feel the temperature around me rise. Wow, what's going on? Who's casting fire-type magic here? Suddenly, a deafening roar rings in my ears. Wow, a Fire Lion—a level 6 Phantom Beast, no, a Monster Beast (Phantom Beasts that haven't formed a contract with humans at birth are called Monster Beasts). My legs are already shaking uncontrollably.

It stares at me with blood-red eyes, probably thinking the same thing as me—smacking its lips.

"Ah!, Brother Fire Lion, I'm just a kid! You can't eat me! I'm the flower of the motherland! I don't have much meat. How about I go home and bring you some food? Ah, no!" Before I finish speaking, the Fire Lion pounces at me.

I instinctively use instant teleportation—I've been chased by the Light Tiger so many times, it's become a reflex. While dodging the Fire Lion's attacks, I shoot a flare into the air (actually, I use Light Arrow to send the light ball formed by Illumination into the air. The flare will naturally explode in the air, creating a large area of bright light—this is a mage's distress signal).

"You stinky Fire Lion, not convinced? What can you do to me? You can't catch me, you can't catch me!" Thinking I still have instant teleportation, I feel much more at ease. I'm very confident in this. No matter how powerful the Fire Lion is, it can't be stronger than the Light Tiger plus the old devil. At the very least, it can't do anything to me before my magic power is exhausted. (Before my magic power runs out, I would have already escaped with instant teleportation—teleporting 500 meters at a time, I can teleport several times. Hehe.)

The air is so hot! For the sake of safety first, I cast almost all the defensive magic I know on myself. First, of course, Holy Protection—it can filter the air and isolate the heat emitted by the Fire Lion. Then I summon the Light Prism Shield in my left hand.

I make a face at the Fire Lion, silently recite the spell, and shoot a Light Arrow at it with my right hand. Although it's not very powerful, it will still hurt if it hits.

The Fire Lion gets angry. One fire-type intermediate magic after another pounces at me. I block, I dodge—just like in the burlap sack formation. I circle around it easily, making it dizzy.

The fire on the Fire Lion's body gradually fades—its magic power is probably being consumed quickly. It gasps for breath and looks at me. Haha, Monster Beasts aren't that powerful—they can't do anything to me. I cancel both Holy Protection and the Light Prism Shield (using so many magics at once consumes a lot of my magic power). I just need to dodge—anyway, it can't hit me. I'll wait for rescue. This place isn't far from the village; I estimate the village's guard team will arrive soon.

Suddenly, the Fire Lion raises its head and roars to the sky. I suddenly feel the temperature, which had already dropped, skyrocket crazily. Ah, what's happening? No, it's the level 6 fire-type magic—Blazing Wave. This is an all-around magic; I can't run away! In my name, Elian Rayner, great light elements, gather in front of me and block all evil! I only have time to cast a Light Shield. The overwhelming flames surge down, covering everything within 300 meters. Due to my carelessness, the energy of instant teleportation isn't fully exerted, and I'm trapped inside. I pour all my magic power into the Light Shield, reciting the Light Shield spell over and over again. But the power of Blazing Wave is too great—I'm about to lose my grip and become roasted Elian.

"Water elements in the air, heed my call. Turn into indestructible hail and destroy the evil before you."

Ah! Saved! With someone's spell, my pressure disappears. The Hail Spell cancels out the Fire Lion's magic. The Fire Lion is also at the end of its rope—its magic power was already almost exhausted by me; that was its last attack.

"Ah!, It's Elian! Elian's mom, come quickly—it's your son!"

Mom is here. Finally, it's over. I faint.

...

I gradually regain consciousness after who knows how long. Opening my eyes, I see Mom sitting beside me with red eyes.

"Elian is awake! Honey, come quickly. Elian, how are you feeling? Better?"

Yesterday, my magic power was at its limit by the end. I got burned in several places by the Fire Lion's magic, and with the heavy consumption of spiritual power and magic power, I fainted. Under Mom's water-type magic treatment, I'm basically fully recovered—only my spirit isn't very good.

"Mom, I'm fine."

"Son, how are you? Are you better?" Dad runs out from the inner room.

"Much better, Dad."

"If the elder hadn't saved you, you would have never seen Mom again." With that, Mom hugs me and cries.

"Elian, what happened at that time?" Dad asks.

I tell them what happened.

Dad says seriously: "You silly boy, remember—never give any enemy a chance. With your current magic, if you encounter an enemy above the level of Intermediate Mage, you must run immediately. Because besides running, you have no way to hurt them. Moreover, how could you be so careless in battle? If you had used the Light Prism Shield to expand your defense, you might not have been injured."

I didn't listen to the rest of Dad's words, but I clearly remembered—run when you see an enemy. From then on, no matter what kind of enemy I face, I cover myself tightly with defensive magic.

The Son of Light narrowly passed his first test in life.
