Chapter 183 - Chapter 183: Naruto: Becoming a Trendsetter From Today

Zabuza stood in the training yard, watching Naruto with an expression caught between confusion and frustration.

"I don't understand," he said, his voice carrying the particular edge of someone who knew they were missing something important. "Why is Terumi Mei-sama calling for you again? We were supposed to be preparing for the assault on Yagura. That's the priority. That's what everything has been building toward."

He crossed his arms, his scarred face settling into a scowl. "And she specifically said I couldn't come with you. Just you. Alone."

The more he thought about it, the more it bothered him. This was his rebellion, his fight against the Mizukage who'd turned Kirigakure into a nightmare. Naruto's involvement had come through Zabuza's introduction, through their alliance.

So why was he being excluded?

"What could Terumi Mei-sama possibly need that's more important than planning Yagura's downfall?" Zabuza muttered, his mind working through possibilities.

Actually, if he was being honest with himself, he had a suspicion. The way Terumi Mei had reacted yesterday when Naruto demonstrated the vibration technique, the flush on her face, the way she'd sat immobilized with her legs crossed for ten minutes afterward. The very specific questions she'd asked about the technique's "applications."

But no, that couldn't be it. That would be completely unprofessional. They were in the middle of planning a coup. Personal matters could wait.

Zabuza shook his head, dismissing the thought. He was reading too much into things.

"Naruto," he said, trying a different approach. "What does Terumi Mei-sama want this time?"

Naruto's face immediately flushed red. His eyes widened fractionally, and he glanced away with the particular discomfort of someone who'd just been asked about something awkward.

"You... you know?" Naruto asked carefully.

Know? Know what?

Zabuza's confusion deepened. "Know what?"

Naruto studied Zabuza's face for a long moment, clearly reading the genuine bewilderment there. His shoulders relaxed, and he let out a small breath of relief.

"Oh! Right, yes." Naruto's voice shifted to something more casual, almost artificially so. "Just some details about the battle preparations. She wants to go over strategy, make sure we're aligned on approach. That kind of thing."

"Then why can't I come?" Zabuza pressed. "I'm a key part of this operation. I should be involved in strategic planning."

Naruto arranged this entire alliance. I was the one who brought him in to help overthrow Yagura. Why am I being cut out of planning sessions?

Naruto's expression flickered with something that might have been pity. "Zabuza, have you cleaned the pigsty today? The animals need their afternoon care routine."

The abrupt subject change was as subtle as a hammer to the face.

"Already done," Zabuza said, a hint of pride creeping into his voice. "The pigs are clean, the cattle are bathed, the sheep are fed. Everything's handled."

"Great! Then you can take a break. I'll go see what Terumi Mei-san needs."

Before Zabuza could formulate another question, Naruto vanished in a flicker of the Flying Thunder God (Hiraishin no Jutsu), leaving nothing but displaced air and a faint sense of awkwardness.

Zabuza stood alone in the yard, his mind still working through the puzzle.

"What is Terumi Mei-sama really up to?" he muttered to himself.

The answer was right there, hovering at the edge of his consciousness. But sometimes the obvious was the hardest thing to see, especially when you were too close to the situation.

Naruto materialized at the entrance to Kirigakure's outskirts, where Terumi Mei stood waiting. Her face was flushed, her expression eager in a way that made Naruto immediately wary.

"Terumi Mei-san," he said, keeping his tone polite but firm. "Why did you call me here? We just met yesterday. I'm not someone who has unlimited free time, you know. I have training to do, friends to maintain, a farm to manage."

The mild complaint in his voice was intentional. Terumi Mei needed to understand that he couldn't just drop everything whenever she summoned him, alliance or not.

Terumi Mei's flush deepened. She ducked her head slightly, her voice carrying genuine embarrassment. "Yes. I know. I'm sorry for the imposition."

"Huh?" Naruto blinked. That was surprisingly direct. "What do you mean 'yes'? Yes to what?"

She met his eyes briefly, then looked away. "Yes to... everything you just said. You're right. I shouldn't monopolize your time like this."

That doesn't really answer my question, Naruto thought, studying her carefully.

"Come with me," Terumi Mei said, taking his hand before he could protest. "Let's talk at my house. More privacy there."

She led him through Kirigakure's streets, moving quickly enough that conversation was difficult. Naruto allowed himself to be guided, curiosity overriding his initial reluctance.

Terumi Mei's home was modest by Kage-candidate standards, a single-story traditional house with a well-maintained garden. Inside, despite her living alone, everything was arranged with meticulous care. The entryway was spotless, the decorations tasteful and minimal, everything in its proper place.

"Please, make yourself comfortable," Terumi Mei said, gesturing toward the main room. "You can leave your shoes here."

Naruto followed her instructions, settling onto a cushion at the low table in the center of the room. Terumi Mei knelt across from him with practiced grace and began preparing tea.

Her movements were fluid and precise, each gesture part of a carefully choreographed ceremony. The way she measured the tea leaves, heated the water, poured with exact control. Steam rose from the cups, carrying the delicate fragrance of green tea.

"Please, drink," she said, sliding a cup toward him. "Naruto-kun."

Naruto picked up the tea and sipped carefully, noting the quality. This wasn't cheap tea. "Mei-san, what do you really need from me? You called me here yesterday, and now again today. If this is about learning the vibration technique..."

"Yes," she interrupted, her voice steady. "That's exactly what this is about."

She set down her own tea cup and leaned forward slightly. "I practiced all day yesterday after you left. Tried to replicate what I felt when you demonstrated the technique. But I couldn't get it right. Couldn't even get close to the entry level."

Naruto waited, sensing there was more.

"So this time," Terumi Mei continued, her voice dropping lower, "I'd like to ask you to teach me more directly. No sparring, no competition. Just... place your hands on me and let me feel the vibration clearly. I think experiencing it directly, repeatedly, will help me understand the fundamentals faster."

The request hung in the air between them.

Naruto studied her face, reading the genuine determination there beneath the embarrassment. She really did want to learn this technique. And as an ally preparing for a dangerous coup, having every possible advantage made sense.

"Here?" he asked. "Right now?"

"Yes. Right here." Her eyes held his, expectant and hopeful.

She's an ally, Naruto reminded himself. And allies help each other learn. That's what friendship is about.

"Alright," he said, shifting around the table to sit beside her. "But this is just teaching. Professional training. Understood?"

"Of course," Terumi Mei agreed quickly. "Purely educational."

Naruto placed his hand on her shoulder, feeling the tension in her muscles. "Okay, focus carefully. I'm going to activate the vibration at very low frequency first, then gradually increase it. Pay attention to how the energy moves through your body..."

Two hours later, Naruto withdrew his hand and returned to his seat across the table. His face felt warm, and he carefully avoided looking directly at Terumi Mei.

Terumi Mei herself looked thoroughly satisfied but exhausted. Her face was flushed, her breathing slightly elevated, her hair slightly disheveled despite not having moved from her seated position.

"I... I need to use the restroom," she said, her voice noticeably hoarse. "Excuse me for a moment."

She rose somewhat unsteadily and disappeared down the hallway.

Naruto sat alone in the room, feeling distinctly uncomfortable. He'd taught the technique as requested, yes, but the whole situation had been... well, it had been educational. For both of them. In ways that had nothing to do with combat applications.

When Terumi Mei returned a few minutes later, having composed herself somewhat, Naruto spoke before she could say anything.

"I can't come here for nothing," he said, his voice carrying a note of determination. "If I'm making these trips to Kirigakure, I need to accomplish something concrete. I want to make friends with Chojuro-san and Ao-san before I leave today."

Terumi Mei blinked, clearly not expecting that particular request. Then she smiled, some of her usual confidence returning. "Of course you do. But before that, I actually do have a battle plan to discuss. The actual strategic planning I told Zabuza-san about."

Her voice was still hoarse, the words coming out slightly rough.

She pulled out a scroll and unrolled it on the table, revealing a detailed map of Kirigakure and the surrounding area. "We move in one week. Here's what I've planned..."

For the next thirty minutes, she outlined her strategy for the assault on Yagura. The approach vectors, the diversion tactics, the key targets, the estimated opposition forces, the contingencies.

It was thorough, professional, clearly the result of significant planning and intelligence gathering.

Naruto listened politely, nodding at appropriate moments. But truthfully, he wasn't particularly interested in the tactical details. When the time came, his role would be straightforward: punch through whatever defenses existed and hit Yagura hard enough to end the fight quickly.

Strategy was for people who needed to be careful. Naruto's approach was more direct.

"That sounds fine," he said when she finished. "Just let me know when we're starting, and I'll be there."

Terumi Mei nodded, looking oddly refreshed despite the hoarseness of her voice. She stood and moved toward the door. "I'll send someone to fetch Chojuro and Ao now. Give me a few minutes."

She stepped outside briefly, and Naruto heard her speaking with someone in the distance. Within ten minutes, footsteps approached the house.

Chojuro entered first, his distinctive nervous energy apparent in every movement. Ao followed, his single visible eye scanning the room with professional assessment.

"Terumi Mei-sama!" Chojuro said immediately, his voice higher with concern. "Is it time? Are we starting the operation?"

He'd clearly been pulled from whatever he was doing with minimal explanation, and his first assumption was that the coup was beginning.

"Ahem..." Terumi Mei cleared her throat, wincing slightly. "No, Chojuro. The timeline hasn't changed. Naruto-kun just wanted to meet with you both. To establish... friendships."

Chojuro and Ao exchanged glances, clearly noting something off about their leader's voice.

"Terumi Mei-sama," Chojuro asked carefully, "is something wrong? You sound different."

Terumi Mei shot Naruto a brief look that mixed resentment with something else harder to define. "It's nothing serious. Just some minor physical discomfort."

"Where does it hurt?" Chojuro pressed, his concern genuine and immediate.

"My throat is a bit dry," Terumi Mei said, touching her neck lightly. "That's all."

Naruto felt compelled to contribute something, if only to prevent further awkward questions. "Chojuro-san, don't worry. Mei-san just has a dry throat from... extended conversation. I have some herbal remedies that help with that. I'll make sure to bring them next time I visit."

Terumi Mei's eyes narrowed dangerously at the phrase "next time," but she maintained her composure. "Yes, Naruto-kun. Please do bring those throat-moistening herbs next time. I'm sure they'll be very helpful for preventing future... dryness."

The emphasis she placed on certain words made Naruto's face heat up slightly.

"Thank you, Naruto!" Chojuro said earnestly, completely missing any subtext. "That's very kind of you to think of Terumi Mei-sama's health!"

Ao, however, was not Chojuro. The older jonin had decades of experience reading situations, and his single eye moved between Naruto and Terumi Mei with knowing assessment.

"Terumi Mei-sama," he said carefully, his voice neutral, "you are the linchpin of this entire operation. Your health and wellbeing are paramount. I hope you'll take proper care of yourself and not overexert in ways that might compromise your effectiveness."

The diplomatic phrasing carried layers of meaning that Terumi Mei clearly caught. Her flush deepened slightly.

"I understand, Ao-san. Thank you for your concern."

She turned to address both men more formally. "Now then, the reason Naruto-kun called you here is actually quite important. He's extended his assistance to our cause, and that makes him a valuable ally. Establishing proper friendly relationships with him should be a priority."
