"Oh my, Ryan, sister-in-law, what on earth happened?" Sapphire's voice rang out, deliberately loud and surprised. "I'd just coaxed the child to sleep when I heard all this crashing and banging. Our house is livelier today than on Christmas!"
She stepped inside, carefully surveying the mess on the floor and the tense faces around her, then plastered on a fake, conciliatory smile.
In her heart, Sapphire felt secretly smug. She was glad she had been clever earlier.
During dinner, she had sensed that something was off and had promptly taken her child away. She knew her mother-in-law's temper too well; a big scene was bound to happen sooner or later.
