Judith stared at the chicken splattered in dust and cried out in anguish, "Son! What a sin! Now that you've got money, you don't even want roast chicken anymore!"
Yesterday, when her son had come back with a thousand pounds, she had been overjoyed. The moment she was about to ask him for it, he had stopped her, saying he would keep it as savings for her and the old man's retirement.
But in her heart, she had already done the calculations. A thousand pounds was enough to buy a small house nearby. Then she could find a wife for her youngest son, move the whole family over, and live comfortably together.
That was why Judith had gotten up before dawn, walked more than twenty miles of mountain roads to the town market, and bought this roast chicken. She wanted to curry favor with her eldest son, to soften his heart. Who would have thought that now that he was rich, he wouldn't even spare the chicken a glance, letting it fall to the ground instead.
