Chapter 14 - 14 - Why Do You Smell Wrong

The corridors of Heilong Dominion Academy were quiet, almost eerily so, as Lin Yuexin walked toward the training hall. Her footsteps echoed softly against the polished stone floor, a rhythmic reminder of the anxiety coiling in her chest. She adjusted the strap of her bag nervously, aware of the lingering traces of the day—the stares, the whispers, the invisible eyes always following her.

Her suppressants hummed faintly beneath her skin, a fragile shield that had been holding for most of the day. But she knew it was wearing thin. The subtle, human scent she tried to mask—the warmth, the tension, the faint pheromones she had inherited from her late father—was beginning to betray her.

"You smell… different."

The voice was smooth, teasing, and it made her freeze mid-step. Yuexin's heart skipped a beat as she turned her head to see Yichen leaning casually against the wall, smirk curling his lips, his silver fox mark glinting in the dim light. The playful cruelty in his eyes was unmistakable.

"What do you mean?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady, careful. She forced a casual tone, though every nerve in her body hummed with awareness.

He tilted his head slightly, nostrils flaring subtly as if he could sense something she could not. "Your scent… it's… unusual. Not quite human, not quite Alpha. Wrong, somehow. I can't place it."

Yuexin's breath caught. Panic flickered through her chest. The suppressants were failing more than she realized. One wrong move, one misstep in body language, and her secret could be exposed. She forced a smile, a mask she had perfected over weeks.

"I'm… just nervous," she said softly, voice trembling slightly. "Maybe it's the excitement of training."

Yichen's smirk deepened, playful yet dangerous. "Nervous? Perhaps. Or perhaps… you're hiding something."

The hallway seemed to shrink, every shadow pressing closer as Yichen stepped toward her. His presence was magnetic, intoxicating, and terrifying. The subtle pressure of his dominance pressed against her awareness, making her every breath, every micro-expression, every heartbeat a potential betrayal.

Yuexin swallowed, trying to ground herself. "I… I don't hide anything."

"Really?" he whispered, stepping so close that she could feel the faint warmth radiating from him. His gaze flicked down subtly, noting the slight tremble of her fingers, the tension in her shoulders. "Because humans don't usually smell like that. And you… you smell wrong. In a very interesting way."

She felt her pulse spike, heart hammering against her ribcage. Every instinct screamed caution, warning that this was a trap, a test, a dangerous game. Yet, beneath the fear, a strange thrill coiled in her stomach—the intoxicating proximity, the magnetic intensity, the subtle +18 tension of his gaze and breath so close.

Yuexin forced a small, controlled laugh. "I guess I'm… just different."

He tilted his head, eyes narrowing, clearly unconvinced. "Different… or special? Maybe dangerous? Perhaps you're something I haven't encountered before. Something… unexpected."

Her hands clenched the straps of her bag. Every nerve screamed that she needed to retreat, to escape the suffocating dominance pressing around her, but she forced herself to remain poised. Awareness was her weapon, her shield, and she would not falter—not now.

The psychological tension thickened as Yichen's gaze lingered on her, teasing, assessing, reading every subtle cue. "You're hiding something," he murmured softly. "And I like it. Very… intriguing."

Yuexin's stomach tightened. She tried to distract herself, forcing a step back, subtly shifting her weight to regain some control of the space. "I'm not hiding anything," she repeated, voice firmer this time, though the tremor of fear and awareness betrayed her.

He smirked, leaning just slightly closer. The faint brush of warmth from his body made her instincts flare, both human and suppressed alpha, warning her and thrilling her at the same time. "Ah, but I can sense it. The scent, the tension, the subtle… difference. You can't hide from me."

Zhenyu appeared at the far end of the hallway, dark eyes scanning, dragon mark faintly pulsing. His presence was commanding, protective, a silent assertion of territory and claim. Yet he did not intervene directly. He let Yuexin navigate the dangerous game, watching, waiting, ready to assert dominance if necessary.

Yuexin felt the tug of both brothers—the playful, teasing threat of Yichen, and the controlled, protective dominance of Zhenyu. Her pulse raced, her instincts flared, and every breath, every glance, every subtle micro-expression became a battlefield of survival and desire.

Yichen's hand moved subtly, brushing against the strap of her bag, just enough for her to feel it, a deliberate, teasing contact. "You're so aware… so careful," he murmured softly. "But it doesn't matter. I can feel it. Your secret… the way you're wrong and yet… right. Dangerous."

Yuexin swallowed hard, pulse spiking. "I… I'm human," she whispered, voice barely audible. She tried to anchor herself, force her heartbeat into a slower rhythm, but the proximity, the intensity, and the subtle seduction of his dominance made it nearly impossible.

Yichen tilted his head, smirk deepening, voice low and teasing. "Human… yet something else. Interesting. Very… interesting."

The hallway was silent except for their voices, every word a test, a tease, a subtle declaration of dominance and awareness. Yuexin's human instincts flared, a warning and a thrill. Her body reacted instinctively to proximity, touch, and scent—every micro-expression, every subtle movement under scrutiny, every heartbeat exposed.

Zhenyu's eyes darkened from the distance, the protective energy radiating in silent waves. He did not step forward, yet Yuexin could feel his gaze on her, anchoring her, protecting her, asserting silent claim.

The tension between the three of them was electric, charged, and intoxicating—a dangerous, subtle +18 interplay of dominance, territory, and desire.

Yichen leaned even closer, voice dropping to a near whisper, intimate and dangerous. "I wonder… how far you can hide it. How long you can pretend to be… normal. But I'll find out. I always do."

Yuexin felt her knees weaken slightly, pulse racing uncontrollably. She forced herself to straighten, inhale slowly, exhale carefully, grounding herself in awareness and control. "I… can handle it," she murmured. "I always do."

He smirked, clearly pleased, yet there was a dangerous edge to his amusement. "We'll see, human," he said softly, backing away slightly but leaving the tension thick in the air. "We'll see."

As he disappeared down the hallway, Yuexin exhaled slowly, hands trembling slightly. Her suppressants had been pushed to their limit, her instincts on high alert, yet she had survived. She realized the subtle game Yichen played—the teasing, the testing, the intoxicating pull of danger and desire. And she knew it was only the beginning.

Her eyes flicked to the distant figure of Zhenyu, dark and protective, and she felt a strange mixture of safety and intensity. Survival at Heilong Dominion Academy was no longer just about observation or mimicry. It was about navigating the dangerous, intoxicating currents of dominance, desire, and unspoken claim that flowed between the most powerful Alphas.

And Yuexin knew she had just been reminded—her human scent, her difference, her vulnerability, made her dangerous, fascinating… and entirely too noticeable.
