Chapter 64
The file unlocked itself at 3:17 a.m.
Kade was awake when the alert hit.
He sat up in bed instantly, heart already racing, instincts screaming. The tablet on the nightstand vibrated again—once, twice—then went still. He grabbed it, eyes scanning the screen as lines of encrypted text began to resolve themselves.
Behind him, Kiera stirred.
"Kade?" Her voice was low, rough with half-sleep. "What is it?"
He didn't answer immediately. His jaw tightened as the final layer peeled away and a single name appeared at the top of the file.
PROJECT ASHES.
PRIMARY SUBJECT: KIERA FROST.
His blood went cold.
"Kade," she repeated, sharper now. "Talk to me."
He turned slowly, the glow of the screen lighting his face. She knew that look. She had seen it on men right before the worst truths were spoken.
"There was a contingency," he said. "Alistair left something behind."
Her spine straightened. "Left what?"
"A psychological profile. Surveillance logs. Years' worth."
