The SUV's window was cold against my forehead, a small anchor of reality in a world that felt like it was spiraling further out of control with every mile we traveled.
"Did you hear what I said?"
I blinked, pulling myself back to the present. Hannah sat beside me, her expression concerned. On her other side, Marie was twisted around in her seat, talking to someone in the row behind us.
"Sorry," I whispered. "What?"
"I asked if you'd ever been to the mountain territories before." Hannah's voice was kind, patient. She'd been kind since I became the King's personal servant, in small ways that probably seemed insignificant to her but meant everything to me.
"No. Never."
"It's beautiful up there. Cold, though. Much colder than the castle. I hope you packed warm clothes."
