Chapter 3 - A Secret with a Name

The next day, I told myself I wouldn't go back.

I really did.

But my feet still carried me down the familiar hallway after school, past the chatter and the noise, straight toward the old music room like they already knew where they belonged.

I hesitated outside the door.

What if he wasn't there?

What if he was?

I pushed it open anyway.

The room looked the same as always—quiet, warm, wrapped in golden afternoon light. For a second, I felt silly for expecting anything different.

Then I heard a voice.

"You came back."

Eli was sitting on the floor near the window, his back against the wall, legs stretched out in front of him. He looked up at me, surprised—and relieved, I think.

"I—" I stopped myself. "This is where I usually go."

"Me too," he said, smiling slightly. "Or… it was."

I set my bag down near the piano, my movements careful, like I might scare the moment away if I moved too fast.

"Did you tell anyone?" I asked.

He shook his head immediately. "I said I wouldn't."

I believed him.

I sat at the piano, lifting the cover gently like it was something fragile. My fingers rested on the keys, but I didn't play yet.

Eli watched quietly, not staring—just… waiting.

"Do you want me to?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Yes," he said. "But only if you want to."

So I did.

The melody came slowly at first, unsure of itself. Then it grew, filling the room with something warm and honest. I forgot about everything else—until I realized he was smiling.

Not a loud one. Not teasing.

Just soft.

When I finished, the silence felt different than before. Fuller.

"That song," he said, "did you write it?"

I shook my head. "It just… happens."

"I think that's better," he replied. "It feels real."

I glanced at him. "You don't talk much for someone who listens so well."

He laughed quietly. "Guess we balance each other out."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he stood up. "Same time tomorrow?"

My heart skipped before my mind could catch up.

"…Okay."

As he left, I realized something strange.

The music room didn't feel lonely anymore.

And neither did I.
