Chapter 159 - Chapter 159: A Meeting of Shadows and Beasts

Chapter 159: A Meeting of Shadows and Beasts

The ceaseless rain of the Land of Rain fell upon a secluded valley deep in the hinterlands, a place of thick mist and perpetual twilight. Beneath the dark, weeping sky, two columns of shinobi, clad in waterproof hats and cloaks, converged from opposite directions.

One force marched under the banner of Iwagakure. Leading them was Tsuchikage's aide, Nōhei. The number of ninja he brought was modest, just over a thousand. To an outsider, this might seem insufficient. But to those who understood the economy of shinobi warfare, it was a terrifyingly potent concentration of force. A thousand trained ninja could dismantle a conventional army ten times its size without breaking a sweat.

The logic behind the small number was cold and practical. After the horrific losses of the previous engagement, throwing more raw numbers at Konoha—especially with the Rakshasa in their ranks—was tantamount to delivering rations to the enemy. This time, Iwa was playing a different game. The thousand they brought were the elite; the majority were hardened jonin. And they carried with them a secret weapon, a trump card they believed would redefine the very concept of power on the battlefield and send shockwaves throughout the shinobi world.

The other column was their recent, unfortunate allies: Sunagakure.

In truth, the two villages shared a certain kinship of hardship. One was a village carved from endless rock, the other from boundless sand. Both lands were harsh, unforgiving, and poor in natural bounty. Their drives for expansion, for seizing the fertile lands of others, were born from the same desperate need.

In contrast, villages like Kirigakure and Kumogakure, while martial, enjoyed geographical advantages that made them less desperate, less eager to plunge into total war—Kirigakure, in particular, seemed more preoccupied with its own internal, bloody politics.

The two forces met in the sodden valley clearing. Nōhei's eyes scanned the Suna ranks, and a frown etched itself onto his weathered face. "Where is Advisor Chiyo?" he called out, his voice carrying over the drumbeat of rain. "With a force like this, how do you intend to pressure Konoha?"

From the Suna ranks, a figure stepped forward. Clad in the distinctive black attire and mask of Suna's ANBU-equivalent dark forces, he was tall, with a long sword strapped to his back. An aura of coiled, lethal power radiated from him. As a quasi-Kage level shinobi himself, Nōhei recognized the mark of a peer—a close-quarters specialist, a master bladesman.

"Another quasi-Kage?" Nōhei's tone was skeptical. "To snipe at Konoha now… Forget the Rakshasa; even the White Fang would chew through you. Are you aiming to repeat your last mistake?"

Before the masked Suna-nin could retort, a new voice cut through the damp air. It was calm, almost bored, yet laced with an arrogance so profound it felt like a physical pressure.

"And who have the Iwa-nin sent this time? Nōhei, Tsuchikage's aide. You, too, are a general who tasted defeat. What face do you have to return to this battlefield?"

Nōhei's head snapped towards the source of the voice, his expression darkening. "Who speaks?!"

In response, the entire Suna formation, including the quasi-Kage swordsman, parted with disciplined silence, forming an honor guard. From behind them, a robed figure advanced with a slow, deliberate gait. Each step was precise, unhurried, echoing a supreme confidence that defied the mud and the misery of the rain.

As the figure drew nearer, Nōhei's eyes fixed on the character embroidered on the robe's breast: "Wind."

His breath hitched. "The Kazekage's mantle… You are the Third Kazekage. I did not expect you to come in person."

The admission was laced with genuine shock. Even after Iwa's catastrophic losses, the Tsuchikage himself had remained in the security of his village. For a Kage to leave his seat of power was a monumental risk, a move that could destabilize an entire nation if something went awry. The Third Kazekage, hailed as the "Strongest Kazekage," was young, bold… and perhaps reckless.

Swallowing his surprise, Nōhei dipped his head in a show of respect. "With Lord Kazekage taking the field, dealing with Konoha should be a simple matter."

"Take action?" The Third Kazekage's voice was a cold blade. "Did I say I would join forces with you?"

BOOM!

A deafening crack of thunder split the sky, a searing bolt of lightning illuminating for an instant the face beneath the bamboo hat. It was a face of icy indifference, of utter disdain. To this man, Nōhei wasn't an ally; he was an inferior, an insult to the very concept of a Kage-level alliance.

"Before we settle with Konoha, let me deal with you. Victory in the Land of Rain will belong to Sunagakure alone."

The Third Kazekage slowly raised a hand, palm open. His expression was blank, as if he were about to swat a fly.

Screeee—!

The earth itself groaned. The ground trembled as tiny, jet-black particles were violently wrenched from the soil—iron sand, the microscopic metallic ore hidden within the earth. The Third Kazekage's famed Magnet Release: Sand Iron Magnetism allowed him dominion over all ferrous material. In the blink of an eye, the particles coalesced, forming a massive, cruelly pointed triangular pyramid that hovered in the air, poised to crush.

"Wha—?!" Nōhei's blood ran cold. This sudden, violent betrayal was a shock. Weren't we allies? Partners in shared misery and shared defeat?

A Kage's killing intent was a tangible force. Nōhei's mind screamed for him to fight back, but what weapon did a shinobi wield that contained no iron? Kunai? Shuriken? His own sword? They would all turn against him. Earth Release ninjutsu? It would shatter against the concentrated, magnetically charged sand iron.

"Weaklings have no right to speak of alliance with me," the Kazekage stated, his disdain absolute.

The black pyramid tore through the rain-laden air with a shrieking whistle, aimed directly at the heart of the Iwa formation.

Swish!

But before impact, something else moved. A thick, powerful appendage, pale as bone and wreathed in violent chakra, lashed out from within the Iwa ranks. It smashed into the descending sand-iron construct with a sound like a cannon shot, deflecting the blow with brute, primordial force.

"This is…!" The Third Kazekage's eyes narrowed, his detached arrogance replaced by sharp focus. His gaze shot to an unassuming figure standing at the rear of the Iwa column. The ninja wore red, lacquered armor, looking more like an ancient warrior than a modern shinobi. That white appendage… it was no ordinary technique. A Kage's knowledge was vast, and a name surfaced instantly in his mind.

Tailed Beast.

So this was Iwa's secret. No wonder they brought so few. Their trump card was a force of nature itself. They had somehow tamed and weaponized one of the ancient calamities—a feat Sunagakure, despite possessing the One-Tail, had never fully accomplished.

"Nōhei!" a gruff, contained voice came from the armored figure.

A look of profound relief washed over Nōhei's face. He turned back to the Third Kazekage, forcing a diplomatic smile onto his features. "I see… it seems we can discuss cooperation, after all."

The Third Kazekage stared for a long moment at the red-armored Jinchuriki, then at the slowly retracting white tail. With a dismissive flick of his wrist, the suspended sand iron dissolved back into inert particles and fell to the mud.

"Very well," he said, his voice returning to its cold, dispassionate register, as if the attempted murder moments before had been a mere diplomatic formality. "A joint operation would be mutually beneficial."

"Excellent. Cooperation serves us both," Nōhei agreed, the strain in his smile barely concealed.

In the rear, the Jinchuriki known as Gōki, the host of the Five-Tails, remained silent and immobile, the immense power within him sinking back beneath a surface of rigid control. An alliance of desperation and ambition was forged, not in trust, but in the shadow of a demon and the glare of a tyrant.
