Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8 “A Pause More Dangerous Than the Match”

A pause was supposed to give people room to breathe. But in this place, the pause only stretched the fear.

There was no countdown. No new rules. No voice telling them when everything would begin again.

There was only time. And humans left alone with their thoughts.

No light.No movement.

Raditia sat at the far end of the room, his back against the wall.He chose that position not because it was safe, but because from there, he could see everyone.

Some whispered. Some pretended to sleep.Others stared at the floor for far too long.

No one asked,"Are you okay?"

That question had become dangerous.

Gwang Hansol walked slowly past the scattered groups. He could feel the change—the distance between people was growing, even though the room itself had not shrunk.

"Funny," he muttered, barely audible."When we're told to fight, we're united."

"When we're told to wait," Raditia replied without looking at him,"we start eating each other."

Hansol stopped beside him."This isn't part of the game, right?"

His voice trembled—not from stupidity, but from a need to be reassured.

Raditia stared at the writing on the wall."If this were a game," he said,"at least there would be rules."

The corridor leading to the observation sector opened without announcement.

Some thought it was a trap.Others believed it was a silent test.

Raditia stood up."We're just looking," he said."No touching anything."

Not everyone agreed. But no one dared to openly refuse.

That was where they found him.

Kazuhiro stood alone, facing a large window that opened into the darkness outside. There was no weapon in his hands.Yet his posture was that of someonewho had already prepared himself for betrayal.

"If you came here to accuse me," Kazuhiro said without turning around,"you should go back."

Raditia stopped a few steps away."We just want to talk."

"Talking is how misunderstandings begin," Kazuhiro replied."And misunderstandings in this place…always end the same way."

Hansol stepped forward slightly."This is a pause," he said."There's no match."

Kazuhiro let out a dry, hollow laugh."That's exactly why it's dangerous."

He turned around.

"In a match, we know who the enemy is.""In a pause… all we have are memories."

A chill ran up Raditia's neck.

"You still think," Kazuhiro continued,"that when all of this is over, we'll returnto our original worlds?"

No one answered immediately.

"Because I don't," Kazuhiro said."That portal was only an entrance.""Not a promise of going home."

Hansol clenched his fists."Then… what are we supposed to do?"

Kazuhiro looked at the faint writing on the wall of the distant hall. Was it even writing?

"Stop being certain," he said quietly."Because the most certain peopleare always the first to feel justifiedwhen destroying others."

The lights did not go out. There was no threatening sound.

Yet the distance between them grew once more.

And everyone realized:this pause was not a rest.

It was the first crack.
