Cherreads

Chapter 5 - First Taste of Power

Her new apartment smelled faintly of fresh paint and ambition, moving boxes were half unpacked, but she didn't care, she had bigger things to focus on now: a meeting that could set the tone for her new role, her first real step into a world she had only glimpsed from the outside.

The elevator ride up to the corporate floor felt longer than it actually was, each floor she passed reminded her that she was walking into the lion's den—and that she was meant to be one of them. Her reflection in the mirrored walls showed a calm, composed woman. Inside, though, a storm of anticipation churned.

"Good morning, Miss..." The receptionist trailed off as she passed, clearly unsure how to address her.

"Racheal," she said softly, with a faint smile. "Just Racheal."

Her name alone carried weight, though no one yet knew how dangerous it could be.

The boardroom smelled of polished wood and fresh coffee, executives were already seated, eyes scanning reports and tablets, conversations were quiet, calculated, and dripping with subtle power plays. She entered, carrying herself with the calm confidence of someone who belonged, even if they didn't realize it yet.

Elias stood at the head of the table, a small smile playing on his lips, he didn't speak immediately, letting her presence settle in before the meeting began. She took her seat with quiet precision, placing her notebook and pen in front of her, and opened her mind to absorb every detail.

The meeting started with projections—figures, percentages, potential risks, men spoke first, confident in their authority. They didn't notice the subtle discrepancies in their numbers until she quietly pointed them out.

"Excuse me," she said, voice calm but firm. "If we adjust the supply chain by twelve percent, we can cut costs without compromising delivery times. It also mitigates the risk highlighted in last quarter's review."

A silence fell over the room. Heads turned. Some eyebrows raised.

Elias's eyes, however, held approval. He leaned back, watching her carefully, as if noting every word, every pause.

"Interesting," he said. "Explain your approach further."

She did, step by step, methodically, analyzing data, identifying loopholes, suggesting improvements that others hadn't considered. She spoke with confidence, but never arrogance, and by the time she finished, the room's energy had shifted. People who had underestimated her were now attentive, cautious, calculating how this new presence might affect their own standing.

Afterward, a junior executive approached her quietly. "I... didn't expect that," he murmured.

She smiled faintly, allowing no pride to show. "Expectations are often overrated."

Elias walked over to her side. "You handled that exceptionally well," he said, low enough that only she could hear.

"Thank you," she replied.

"You know," he added, eyes glinting with something unreadable, "this is just the beginning."

She nodded, understanding, she was beginning to taste the intoxicating mix of authority and influence, and it was thrilling, terrifying, and addictive all at once.

The rest of the day blurred into meetings, strategy sessions, and introductions. By evening, she had met directors, investors, and department heads each handshake, each brief conversation, was a test and she passed them all.

Finally, she returned to her apartment, exhausted yet exhilarated. She sank into the sofa, letting the city lights filter through the window. Lagos looked different from up here, brighter, full of opportunity, but she knew this was only the first chapter of her rise.

Her phone buzzed with a message.

Elias: You handled yourself well today, keep this up.

She smiled, a quiet thrill warming her chest, this was power, this was influence and she was just getting started.

Tomorrow, she would face more challenges, more scrutiny, and perhaps more temptation. But tonight, she allowed herself to feel a single truth: she was capable, and she was ready.

Because ambition, she realized, tasted sweeter when earned.
