Chapter 49 - The Awakening Beneath

BACK TO GOLGOTHA

Chapter Fifty-Two: The Awakening Beneath

The night over Ikare had become something unnatural.

It no longer behaved like ordinary darkness. It breathed. It shifted slowly across the rooftops like a massive creature curling around the town, tightening its grip with every passing hour.

Stephen Dagunduro stood in the center of the church compound, staring into the distance. His chest rose and fell slowly as the Veil pulsed inside him, steady but tense, like a warrior waiting for the next blow.

The first wave had passed.

But Stephen knew Baba Dagunduro too well.

That had not been an attack.

It had been reconnaissance.

Favour approached quietly, her footsteps careful against the cracked concrete floor.

"You haven't rested," she said softly.

Stephen shook his head.

"Rest will not change what is coming."

Favour followed his gaze toward the hills beyond Ikare.

The sky above them churned with dark clouds that had refused to move for hours. Lightning flickered silently within them, illuminating twisted shapes that seemed to move between the clouds.

"What do you feel?" she asked.

Stephen's voice was low.

"The earth."

Favour frowned slightly.

"The earth?"

Stephen nodded.

"The Gate isn't just beneath the valley anymore."

He turned slowly toward her.

"It's spreading."

Beneath the Land

Miles below the surface of Ondo State, something ancient stirred.

Stone caverns that had remained untouched for centuries were breaking apart slowly. Massive pillars cracked under the pressure of awakening creatures shifting in their slumber.

One by one…

Ancient eyes opened.

Not just serpents.

Not just shadows.

Something older.

Massive scaled beings coiled through underground chambers like rivers of living stone. Their bodies were enormous, their breaths deep and thunderous.

They had slept through generations of human history.

Empires had risen and fallen above them.

But now…

The Gate had begun to open.

And the call had reached them.

A low rumble moved through the underground world.

The awakening had begun.

The Valley Chamber

In the ritual chamber, Baba Dagunduro stood motionless before the altar.

But the chamber had changed again.

The ground beneath it had cracked wider than ever before.

From the enormous fissure in the center of the floor, faint golden light pulsed upward like the heartbeat of something enormous buried far below.

The serpent that had once seemed massive now looked almost small beside the widening abyss.

Oyekunle stepped forward nervously.

"Master… the earth is responding faster than we expected."

Baba Dagunduro did not look at him.

"That is because Stephen has awakened the Veil further," he said calmly.

Oyekunle hesitated.

"Then… does that not threaten the ritual?"

Baba Dagunduro finally turned.

And smiled.

"No."

He gestured toward the glowing crack in the earth.

"The Veil does not stop the Gate."

"It feeds it."

Oyekunle's face drained of color.

"Feeds it…?"

Baba Dagunduro's voice was quiet, almost reverent.

"The Veil is not merely protection."

"It is the key."

He turned back toward the abyss.

"And Stephen Dagunduro is the lock."

The Second Disturbance

Back in Ikare, the ground trembled again.

This time stronger.

The church windows rattled violently.

People screamed outside as the streets cracked in several places.

Stephen stiffened instantly.

The Veil surged painfully in his chest.

Favour grabbed his arm.

"Stephen!"

Stephen's voice dropped to a whisper.

"They're waking."

Across the town square, the pavement split open again.

But this time…

It didn't stop.

The crack stretched across the entire street like a black scar tearing through the earth.

Dust and debris rose into the air.

People ran in panic.

Then the ground beneath the crack shifted.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Something enormous was moving beneath it.

Favour's eyes widened.

"That's not the same creature from before."

Stephen nodded grimly.

"No."

The Veil flared brighter around him.

"It's something worse."

The First Ancient

The earth exploded upward.

Stone shattered as a massive scaled head forced its way out of the ground.

The creature was enormous.

Easily twice the size of the serpent Stephen had fought earlier.

Its scales shimmered black and gold beneath the storm-dark sky.

Its eyes burned with ancient intelligence.

The creature lifted its massive head slowly.

And stared directly at Stephen.

The entire town square fell silent.

Then the creature spoke.

Not with sound.

But inside Stephen's mind.

Gate bearer.

Stephen clenched his fists.

"You will not enter this world."

The creature's eyes narrowed.

We already have.

Behind it, the crack widened again.

More movement beneath the earth.

More shapes.

More eyes opening.

Favour stepped closer to Stephen.

"There are more coming."

Stephen nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The Veil surged violently.

But this time…

Something strange happened.

The Ancient did not recoil.

Instead…

It leaned closer.

Studying him.

Recognition

The Ancient lowered its massive head.

Its golden eyes glowed brighter.

Your blood…

Stephen felt his chest tighten.

The Gate remembers you.

Stephen shook his head.

"I serve God, not you."

The creature's voice rumbled through his mind again.

All gates serve purpose.

Then the ground trembled harder.

Two more massive shapes began pushing upward beneath the earth.

More Ancients.

Awakening.

Favour whispered urgently.

"Stephen we can't fight three of them!"

Stephen knew she was right.

The Veil surged again.

But he could feel the cost.

His vision blurred slightly.

His hands trembled.

The power required to repel one Ancient had nearly drained him before.

Three might kill him.

Baba Dagunduro Watches

Deep within the valley chamber, Baba Dagunduro closed his eyes slowly.

He could feel the awakening spreading through the land.

The Ancients rising.

The Gate responding.

Oyekunle watched nervously.

"Master… the first three have emerged."

Baba Dagunduro smiled.

"Good."

"And Stephen?"

Oyekunle swallowed.

"He is confronting them now."

Baba Dagunduro opened his eyes.

And whispered softly.

"Then the true test begins."

The Veil Unleashed

Back in the town square, the second Ancient broke through the ground.

Then the third.

Three towering creatures now stood across the cracked earth.

The storm above them roared louder.

Stephen stepped forward slowly.

Favour grabbed his arm.

"You cannot fight them all!"

Stephen's voice was calm.

"I don't have to."

He closed his eyes.

The Veil exploded outward.

But this time…

It did not form a shield.

It rose like a pillar of light.

Blazing upward into the storm clouds.

The entire town glowed with radiant power.

The Ancients recoiled slightly.

Their massive bodies shifting uneasily.

The Veil had changed again.

It was no longer simply resisting them.

It was declaring territory.

Stephen opened his eyes.

Light burned within them.

"You will not take this land."

The three Ancients hissed in unison.

But they did not attack.

They hesitated.

For the first time…

The darkness had encountered something it did not fully understand.

The Warning

After several tense moments, the first Ancient lowered its head again.

Gate bearer…

Its voice echoed deeply in Stephen's mind.

This world is not yet ready.

Stephen did not respond.

The Ancient continued.

But the Gate will open fully.

The ground trembled again beneath the creatures.

Then slowly…

They began retreating back into the cracks.

One by one.

The earth sealed partially behind them.

Silence returned to the square.

Stephen collapsed to one knee.

The Veil faded back into his chest.

Favour rushed to his side.

"You did it!"

Stephen shook his head weakly.

"No."

He looked down at the cracked ground.

"I only convinced them to wait."

Favour frowned.

"Wait for what?"

Stephen looked toward the distant hills.

Toward the valley.

Toward Baba Dagunduro.

"For the Gate to open completely."

Thunder rolled across the sky again.

And far beneath the earth…

Something far larger than the first three Ancients began to move.

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
