Morning crept slowly into the throne room.
Zarek stood before the high windows, arms folded behind his back.
The doors opened.
Aldric entered with a stiff bow. Even from across the room, Zarek felt the tension rolling off him.
Without turning, the king said, "Speak."
"Your Majesty," Aldric began, "Eliora's parents have been found."
Zarek turned then,"Were they harmed?"
"No, sire. They are unharmed." Aldric replied.
"Where were they found?"
"In a shelter home in Greybridge, a human town near the eastern border."
Zarek exhaled, unmistakably relieved.
"Good. Have someone deliver the message to my soulmate immediately."
"Yes, sire."
But Aldric's voice held something strained.
Zarek's gaze narrowed.
"You are displeased."
Aldric straightened as if struck. "It is nothing, Your Majesty."
Zarek's tone dropped. "Is it about Maelina?"
Aldric hesitated before answering. "She… is on bed rest, still healing."
