Chapter 10 - HOWLING TO THE MOON

"Thinking about your unfaithful mate?" said the voice as it made a turn and sat beside me.

I let out a huge sigh of relief and suddenly calmness eroded my soul.

I turned to the person now sitting beside me. 'Cara!'

I suddenly remembered what she did for me. "I'm sorry I never got to thank you for breaking the spell." I said with a polite smile.

"Yeah… I heard you can finally wield your wolf." She said looking distant.

"Nia, right?" she turned to me. "Your wolf." She asked.

"Yeah." I replied with a nod, a little shy.

"How does it feel to finally grow into her under a full moon without any hindrance?" she looked at me with a smirk.

"It feels great, it's something I can't really explain." I said.

Cara nodded. "That's great." She paused, continuing afterwards. "Now one part is over, what's left for you to do is harness the magical powers handed down to you from your bloodline." She added.

I was quiet. "The aurora's seal right?" I asked. "That's what is needed to help me harness my powers."

"Yes." She nodded. "But even without it, you can still harness some of your potential even if it be on the surface." She explained.

I became curious. "How were you able to harness yours?"

"It was nothing like yours." She smiled at me. "At ten I was already receiving training on how to master my abilities."

I was flabbergasted. At ten I was busy at the library reading books.

"Won't you like to know how it feels to have magic coursing through your skin? Ever wondered how it feels to feel magic in your breath, taste it with your tongue? Just like you could easily tell those wolves had a dark energy emanating from them… that's one of the many ways it works."

"More than anything." I replied eagerly.

She smiled at me and then turned to face the full moon. "Have you ever howled before?" she asked.

"I think so." I thought about it for a while. "Probably when I was five …with my dad. The memory is a little blurry." I replied.

"That's such a long time." She exhaled. "Do you miss it?" she probed.

"I don't remember how it feels to howl or how to do it to begin with. Its been such a long time." I replied earnestly.

She was mute for a while… her mind erupting with ideas.

"You know what?" she turned to me. "Why don't we howl to the moon right now?" She said, her face radiated with excitement at the thought of it.

Immediately she got on her feet and stretched herself, she took on her wolf form. Standing on all fours. Her wolf was so beautiful, a greasily brown fur and her green eyes sparkled under the moonlight.

She made a quick run, the wind caressing her furs, making it dazzle like a beautiful flowery lawn. She wagged her tail and threw her face sideways.

I was bubbling with excitement. I let out a gentle laugh.

"Now let's see yours." She nudged at me.

I suddenly became shy and reserved.

"Come on… don't be like that." She encouraged me.

I got up and stood on my feet. I tried to mimic her. I stretched myself, inwardly awakening my wolf to take over.

I felt my bones reshape and straighten, it was less painful than the first time this happened. My fangs and claws grew from under my gums and feet and my dark silvery fur shimmered under the moonlight. She chuckled in amusement. "She's beautiful. You're beautiful." She said to me and my face flustered with red pink tints.

"Now let's howl out our frustrations and anger at the universe!" she said to me with a smile.

I was more than excited to learn the art of howling.

She went first, lowering her hind limbs and tail to the ground, she started humming the melody from inside her before releasing it to the air and by extension the moon, singing it so harmoniously. It was melodious.

She stopped and looked at me. "Your turn." She said.

I hesitated for a bit, reevaluating my options but we've come this far to back down. And so I did like her, I took her poise and I raised my head to the sky and closed my eyes.

I could feel her eyes on me intently.

"Now let's hear you howl out your heart. Let it come from the depth of your soul. Feel the music surge through your body, freely let it out." She instructed.

I nodded.

Was this really going to work? What if it comes off like a broken record?

But then I advised myself and was convinced that I would do just fine._

Actually… It sounded very awful.

My first go at it was worse than a duck's quack. It came off way too flat and unorganized. She shook her head in disapproval. "Now let go of the self doubt and allow yourself feel what's inside you." She placed her paw on my chest and I could feel my heart beat even faster.

I nodded, hoping to give it my best shot this time. I shut my eyes again, like a large cyclone in a vast sea, I stirred the melody and wielded it from within me. I felt it surge like magic through my body, I was amazed at how easy I found it. I raised my head even higher and let out a beautiful howl.

She smiled at my progress and how quickly I learned the art. She joined me immediately and we both howled to the moon… later on, we heard other wolves howling too. We paused and giggled to ourselves.

"You're such a fast learner." She commented.

"Thank you." I blushed. "Thank you for being such a great teacher." I smiled.

"You're welcome." She grinned.

We heard paw gaits in the woods behind us as it stepped on dry leaves and twigs. We turned immediately to the direction of the sound. Emerging from the shadows was Luca, on his handsome wolf self.

"What am I missing out on?" Luca said, snickering. His dark fur had blended so well in the woods that it was a little difficult differing his appearance from the dark shadows behind him except for his glittering red eyes.
