Chapter 17 - a new problem

Scene transitions — evening.

The sun is about to set, orange rays filling the ground and the room. They all prepare to leave. Arjun stuffs a few bullets into his pocket and zips it up. Lily does the same. One gun is in the bag along with the remaining bullets inside a small box. They leave the ammo box behind—too heavy to carry. Sia takes a metal rod from Ahmad.

They stand ready.

The shooters take the rear.

The runners move in the middle.

Lily slowly opens the door. A few zombies lie scattered on the ground outside. They step out carefully. No sound. No sudden movement.

They approach the staircase.

The zombies are on the second floor—but not near the stairs.

If they manage to slip past unnoticed, they live.

If not… they die.

Lily slowly slips her hand into her pocket, takes out a bullet, and aims carefully at a dorm gate far from the stairs.

She throws it.

CLANG!

The bullet hits the metal door hard, the sound echoing through the corridor—loud enough to pull every zombie's attention away from the staircase.

In that split second, they move.

Quiet. Fast. Deep breaths held.

They descend the stairs safely.

But now comes the real challenge.

The first floor is packed.

The zombies roam everywhere—some crawling, some dragging their legs, some standing right in front of the exit.

The main door is wide open, but getting to it is another story.

They freeze at the corner.

Three choices appear in front of them:

Run.

Shoot.

Or come up with something smarter—fast—before the zombies notice them.

They only had a few seconds before the zombies upstairs started roaming again.

They were sandwiched—no way to escape.

Lily froze.

Arjun whispered from behind, "What happened?"

Before she could answer, Ahmad pointed down.

Arjun peeked.

Around ten zombies on the first floor.

Fifty outside.

More than five above them.

They couldn't throw another bullet—if the sound reached outside, the horde would flood in.

Arjun noticed the door.

No stopper.

It could be dragged easily.

Locking it was simple—just turn the knob on top—but it was made of glass, barely strong enough to hold for even a minute.

Arjun whispered, "Get ready to run."

Sia signed it to Lily.

Arjun counted softly, "One… two…"

Ahmad whispered, "Fine…"

Sia, under her breath, "I made the worst mistake…"

GRAWWWWW—THUD!

A zombie from the second floor spotted them and fell straight in front of Arjun's feet.

Arjun hissed, "Run!"

They sprinted instantly
