Chapter 7 - Family

The duplex was bursting at the seams. It was the kind of crowded that made the air conditioner work overtime .

Cam was in his element, weaving through the Dunphys and Pritchetts with a silver tray held high.

"Tiny quiches!" Cam announced, offering one to Jay. " Gruyère and bacon. I call them 'Quiche Me, I'm Irish.'"

Jay stared at the tray. "I'm not saying that, Cam."

"More for me," Luke said, swiping two.

Mitchell stood by the fireplace, tapping a spoon against a glass. The room quieted down, the chaotic hum of three different conversations fading into attentive silence. Aman stood next to him, holding a soda.

"Okay, everyone," Mitchell said, smiling nervously. "Thank you all for coming on such short notice. We know it's been a whirlwind week."

He looked at Aman, then back at the family.

"But we wanted to tell you all... this isn't temporary. We aren't just fostering Aman until a relative shows up. We've spoken to the lawyers. We're adopting. Aman is staying."

A beat of silence hung in the air.

Claire was the first to speak. Her brow furrowed, the 'concerned older sister' override kicking in.

"Wow," Claire said, tilting her head. "That is... wow. Mitchell, it's been a week. Are you sure you aren't rushing into this? Adoption?"

She glanced at Aman. "No offense, Aman."

"None taken," Aman said smoothly. "Due diligence is important."

"Claire!" Mitchell bristled, his shoulders going up. "Can't you just be happy for us? "

"Good," Jay's voice cut through the bickering.

Everyone turned to Jay. He was sitting in the armchair, holding his drink.

"Kid needs a home," Jay said gruffly. "You two need a kid. It's a good fit. Done."

Mitchell blinked. He looked from Claire to Jay, genuinely thrown. "Wait. Usually, Dad is the skeptic and Claire is the... well, Claire is never the cheerleader, but Dad is usually the grump. Did we enter a parallel dimension?"

"It's new me," Jay shrugged. "I like the kid"

"Ay, this is wonderful!" Gloria squealed, rushing forward to envelop Aman in a hug that smelled of expensive perfume . "Now we are truly family! You are a Pritchett! You will come to the village with us! i will show you the goat that looks like my aunt!"

Aman politely nodded, though his eyes widened slightly. Right. Gloria homeotown , only hear crazy stuff from there , I need to make sure my passport gets 'lost' before that trip.

"Welcome to the team, buddy!" Phil bounded over, offering a crisp high-five which Aman returned perfectly. "This is huge. You're going to love it. We have a very loose policy on borrowing tools, and a very strict policy on returning them, which nobody follows!"

Outside, the California evening was cooling down. The sliding glass doors were open, spilling light onto the patio where the "kids" had congregated.

Aman leaned against the railing, watching Luke attempt to balance on the edge of a planter.

Haley was sitting on a deck chair, her legs crossed, watching Aman with intense scrutiny. She had been trying to figure him out for twenty minutes, and it was starting to annoy her.

"So," Haley said, twirling a strand of hair. "You listen to The Music?"

"yes i do," Aman said. "what the one that blowing up now one direction and frank ocean . i prefer "

Haley paused. That was... the correct answer. A cool answer.

Alex, who was sitting next to her with a tablet, looked up. "Okay, music critic. What about your actual interests? Besides stocks, which is just gambling "

Aman smiled. "Movies. Fincher, Spielberg. The structure of visual storytelling."

"Pretentious," Alex noted, but she didn't look displeased.

"Accurate, They are good" Aman conceded.

Haley narrowed her eyes. She whispered to herself, leaning back. "He dresses like a prep... talks like a nerd... but isn't awkward. He passed the music test and the Alex test."

She shook her head. "What is he? A hybrid?"

"Hey Aman!" Luke shouted from the planter. "If I jump from here to the trampoline, do you think I can clear the hedge?"

Aman looked at the distance. He calculated the trajectory.

"You'll clear the hedge," Aman said calmly. "But you'll land in the rose bushes filled with throns ."

Luke considered this. "Worth it."

He jumped. There was a crash, a rustle of leaves, and a muffled "I'm okay!"

Aman took a sip of his soda. "Told him."

Haley stared at him.

Haley sits on the edge of the entryway bench, looking genuinely disturbed. She leans in close to the camera, whispering as if sharing a conspiracy theory.

HALEY "I have spent seventeen years mapping the high school social ecosystem. It is a delicate balance."

(She uses her hands to demonstrate)

HALEY "Nerds wear cargo shorts and fear eye contact. Preps wear boat shoes and don't know who Frank ocean is, he just become famous. still a niche .It's the laws of physics."

(She points a thumb toward the living room)

HALEY" I am telling you, something is wrong here"

Inside, the party volume had reached that sustained roar unique to family gatherings where everyone is talking over everyone else.

Amidst the noise, a smaller drama was playing out in pantomime.

Lily tugged on Cam's sleeve. She held up a crayon drawing of a very angry-looking cat.

"Daddy, look," she said.

"Just a second, sweetie," Cam said, not looking down. He was beaming at Gloria. "Did you hear? Aman folded his own laundry. Hospital corners! I almost fainted."

Lily lowered the drawing. She walked over to Mitchell, who was deep in conversation with Jay near the drinks.

"Daddy, can I have juice?" she asked.

"Hold on, Lily," Mitchell said, gesturing with his wine glass. "Dad, listen to this. He's already talking about reinvesting the assets from the house sale into a index fund. At fifteen! I was still trying to figure out how to return a library book."

Lily stared at Mitchell's back. Her grip tightened on her drawing until the paper crinkled.

Phil tapped a fork against his glass again, signaling another round of speeches. The room quieted down. Phil raised his glass high, his face earnest.

"I just want to say," Phil began, placing a hand on Aman's shoulder, "that the Dunphy clan officially welcomes you. It's not every day you get a new cousin, a new nephew, and..." He paused for dramatic effect. "...a new son."

The silence that followed lasted exactly one second.

It was broken by the sound of a metal tray hitting the hardwood floor. Twenty-four tiny Gruyère and bacon quiches scattered like confetti.

Everyone turned. Lily stood amidst the wreckage, her small fists clenched at her sides, her face bright red.

"Lily!" Cam gasped. "My quiches!"

"I hate quiche!" Lily shouted, her voice shrill and vibrating with an hour's worth of ignored requests. She pointed a shaking finger directly at Aman. "And I hate *him*!"

She spun around and ran for the hallway. A second later, her bedroom door slammed with enough force to rattle the photos on the wall.

The party ground to a halt. The festive mood evaporated instantly.

Mitchell put his hand over his mouth. "Oh my god. What have we done?"

"We've traumatized her," Cam whispered, horrified, already moving toward the hallway. "She feels replaced. This is classic middle-child syndrome, and she doesn't even have an older sibling! , at this rate she would become alex"

Alex sitting on sofa "Ouch!"

Aman stepped in front of them, blocking their path. His voice was low and calm.

"let me give it a try" Aman said.

"But she's upset," Mitchell said frantically. "We need to—"

"You need to let me handle this," Aman interrupted. He looked toward the closed door. "I'm the problem. Sending the people she's mad at in there isn't going to fix it."

Mitch and Cam hesitated, looking at each other.

"Trust me," Aman said.

He walked down the hallway, leaving the stunned party guests behind.

**INT. LILY'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS**

The room was dark, save for the pink nightlight. Lily was a lump under her floral duvet, radiating fury.

Aman didn't knock. He opened the door quietly and stepped inside, closing it behind him to muffle the party noise.

He didn't walk to the bed. He didn't apologize. He sat down on the rug near the door, crossing his legs, putting himself physically lower than her.

He waited.

After a long minute, the duvet rustled. Lily's head poked out. Her eyes were red, but her expression was fierce.

"Get out," she said.

"No," Aman said calmly.

He picked at a loose thread on the rug.

"I remember the regulations," Aman said softly. "For the tea party. Pinkies up. No slurping and crying."

Lily glared at him, but she didn't retreat under the covers.

"You broke the rules," she accused.

"Which rule?"

"You took my spot."

Aman looked up at her. "I didn't take your spot, Lily. I just occupied an empty chair."

He leaned back .

"Look, I've read up on kingdoms," Aman said, shifting into a narrative she would understand. "Every kingdom needs a Queen. That's you. You run this house. You tell Mitch and Cam what to do, and they do it. Everyone knows that."

Lily sat up a little straighter. She was listening.

"But a Queen can't run an army alone," Aman continued. "She needs a General. Someone to handle the boring stuff outside the castle walls. "

He met her eyes.

"I'm just the General, Lily. I report to you. You're still the Queen."

Lily considered this." You aren't fooling me , i am not a child ."

Aman " i could be your big brother and you could be ,my cute little sister . remember the night i came , you seem happy ."

Lily was thinking what aman was saying . " I was ."

The door creaked open slowly. Mitchell and Cam peeked in, their faces anxious.

"Is it safe?" Cam whispered.

Lily looked at Aman, then at her dads.

"He's the General," Lily informed them haughtily.

Mitchell breathed a sigh of relief, stepping into the room. "He absolutely is."

Cam rushed over to the bed, sitting on the edge and smoothing her hair. "And you, my love, are our first baby. Our princess. Nothing changes that. Ever."

Mitchell sat on the other side of her. "There's enough room for everyone, Lily-pad. Okay?"

Lily looked at the three of them encircling her bed. It was crowded. But it wasn't bad.

"Okay," she decided. Then she looked at Aman. "You owe me a new drawing. You made me drop mine."

"Understood," Aman said, standing up. "Lets draw one together."

====

Lily is sitting on the sofa, looking completely unbothered, holding her stuffed unicorn.

LILY "I guess he can stay. He knows his place now."

(She narrows her eyes slightly at the camera)

LILY "But I'm watching him. If he touches Mr. Fluffles, he's out."
