Chapter 24 - Chapter Twenty-Four

I stood on the edge of my balcony, staring down at my mate. Even in the low light of the rising moon, his jet-black hair glistened with droplets from a recent shower. He stood before the crowded lawn with Amelia and Luca at his side, holding the gaze of every wolf in the pack. He thanked the Moon Goddess for her blessings and sought her guidance against the looming threat of the tiger shifters. As he finished, the moon cleared the treetops, enveloping the crowd in a silver glow. I watched the tension bleed out of them, replaced by a look of pure joy, as if the Goddess herself had descended.

As the moon ascended, a shimmery gray mist suddenly shrouded Kayden. Within seconds, a large black wolf with piercing silver eyes stood in his place. His family followed suit, a domino effect of transformations. Luca and Amelia were next, their human forms giving way to the wild. Then, the rest of the pack began to turn. The air filled with the deafening, rhythmic crack of breaking bone as bodies reformed. The sound echoed against the night sky, a haunting symphony I was relieved to hear finally fade into the silence of the forest.

With the transformation complete, the full moon reigned over the sky. Kayden sat back on his haunches, watching as the pack erupted into motion. It was a sea of fur and wagging tails; some wolves wrestled playfully while others paced the lawn, nuzzling one another as if they were reuniting after years apart. Kayden remained a steady anchor in the chaos. As each wolf approached, he greeted them with a familiar rub of his head—a silent, paternal welcome to every member of his flock.

Once the general pack had moved on to Amelia and Luca, Kayden's family stepped forward. Their exchange was longer, a more intimate display of affection that spoke of blood ties and shared history. As they moved to take their places behind him, Luca and Amelia stepped around to face him directly. In a fluid, synchronized motion, they lowered their heads and leaned their bodies forward in a deep bow. Like a ripple through water, the rest of the pack followed suit, falling into a profound silence. Soon, a sea of bowed heads stretched across the lawn, leaving only a single figure standing tall, refusing to bend.

Kayden's eyes suddenly lifted, locking onto mine. It felt intentional, a deliberate gaze meant to ensure I was witnessing the depth of the respect he commanded. It was a silent promise—a display of the life and power that could be mine if I chose to stay by his side. Only when the connection felt absolute did he shift his gaze back to the pack as they straightened from their bows.

Kayden rose to his full height, the pack watching him with bated breath. He tilted his head back, throat baring to the silver light, and let out a long, haunting howl that pierced the silence. As his voice tapered off, his family rose as one, adding their voices to the night. Then Luca and Amelia joined, their howls layering over the others in a growing chord of loyalty. Finally, the rest of the pack erupted. The sound was massive, vibrating through the floorboards of the balcony and into my very chest. While the sound of breaking bones had been visceral and jarring, this was different. It was deafening, yes, but also ancient and melodic—a mythical symphony that felt less like a nightmare and more like a fairytale come to life.

The moment the howls faded, Kayden's family parted with practiced precision, creating a path just wide enough for him to step through. The rest of the pack turned in place, bracing themselves for the run. Without a backward glance, Kayden surged forward, his family and the rest of the pack flowing behind him like a dark tide. The thunder of their paws shook the earth, a rhythmic pounding that I felt deep in my chest. I stood frozen on the balcony, watching until the last tail vanished into the treeline and the heavy vibrations of their departure finally bled into silence. A profound stillness reclaimed the night. The only remaining sound was the ghost of a breeze rustling through the leaves.

As the peace washed over me, I found myself staring back at the moon. It was massive and brilliant—exactly as it had been the night I first arrived. It felt impossible that only twenty-two days had passed since then. On one hand, the calendar told me it had been less than a month; on the other, it felt as though I had known Kayden for lifetimes. Perhaps it was the mate bond weaving our souls together, but the speed and depth of my feelings were staggering. I could no longer imagine a life without him—and more surprisingly, I didn't want to.

A sudden restlessness took hold of me; the walls felt as though they were closing in, and I needed the open air to process my thoughts. Without a second thought, I vaulted over the balcony railing. I landed lightly, the cool, damp grass cushioning my bare feet before I immediately bolted toward the treeline. With my night vision guiding the way, I navigated the shadows of the forest with ease. Tree branches and low bushes clawed at my short white sundress, the fabric snagging occasionally, but I didn't slow down. I'd found the dress laid out on my bed after my shower—a silent suggestion for the moon ceremony. Even though I'd watched from a distance, wearing the traditional white felt like my own private way of honoring the Goddess and supporting Kayden.

I didn't stop until I reached the familiar clearing where Kayden and I had once shared a peaceful evening—before the rogue had shattered the silence. Drawn like a moth to a flame, I drifted toward the lake. The texture beneath my feet shifted from forest floor to the cool, gritty silk of the sand. The moon sat at its zenith, casting a perfect, shimmering reflection onto the center of the black water. As I reached the edge, a gentle wave washed over my feet. The sudden chill made my toes curl against the sand, a sharp shock to my system. Instead of recoiling, I stepped forward, letting the water swallow my ankles as I waded deeper into the cold, dark water.

I waded deeper until the lake reached my thighs. My dress grew heavy, the hem drinking in the water until the fabric began to drag, threatening to pull me down into the depths. The moon's reflection shimmered across the surface like a path of liquid silver, tempting me to follow it into the heart of the lake. I tilted my head back, locking eyes with the moon at its zenith. As I inhaled the crisp, pine-scented air, a wave of profound relief washed over me, dissolving the knots of tension I hadn't even realized I was carrying.

My body reacted before I could even think. I surrendered to the change, allowing my true form to surge to the surface. I felt my rounded tiger ears sprout and twitch atop my head, stretching as if waking from a long slumber. My tail—thick and powerful—swished behind me in a burst of feline joy, snagging the sodden hem of my dress and lifting it as I finally felt whole again.

*

I was mid-stride when the scent hit me—vanilla and honey, a sweet, intoxicating thread woven through the damp forest air. It was my mate. My heart spiked; she should have been safe at the house, miles from where the pack was now patrolling the borders. I snapped a command through the mind-link, and my family peeled away to lead the ceremonial run in my place. Without losing a second of momentum, I veered off the path, my paws tearing through the undergrowth as I chased her scent. I didn't need my eyes to find her; I knew these woods like my own soul, and every step was leading me straight toward the lake.

I burst through the final line of trees, skidding to a halt as I spotted a flash of white by the water's edge. The icy grip of fear that had squeezed my chest finally let go—she was safe. My wolf paced restlessly behind my ribs, desperate to lung forward and nuzzle her, but I forced myself to hold back. I slipped behind a massive oak where I kept a cache of clothes for moments like these. I needed to talk to her, to understand why she was out here alone, and I couldn't do that through the telepathic echoes of my wolf.

I stepped out from the shadow of the oak, tugging on a pair of gray basketball shorts. I intended to call out to her, but the words died in my throat. She was wading toward the center of the lake, her movements slow and deliberate, until she stopped to look up at the moon. I stood frozen, captivated by the sight of her. Her silver hair spilled down her back like a frozen waterfall, shimmering with a metallic luster under the lunar glow.

The hem of her white dress fanned out on the surface of the water, a delicate cloud of fabric swirling around her legs. Against the dark, ink-like water, her pale ivory skin and the stark white of the dress made her look like a masterpiece carved from marble—an otherworldly statue that demanded reverence. Even from behind, her presence was staggering. It felt as though I weren't just looking at my mate, but at a manifestation of the Goddess's own divinity. I held my breath, terrified that if I moved or spoke, this ethereal vision would shatter and vanish into the night mist.

A soft, silvery-blue mist began to coil around her, obscuring her form for a heartbeat. When it dissipated, she was still standing in the shallows, but she was no longer entirely human. Perched atop her head was a pair of ears covered in fur as white as the moon itself, the snowy velvet twitching as they snapped upright. One swiveled toward the forest with feline precision, catching a distant sound I couldn't yet hear. My gaze dropped, tracing the movement of a long, powerful tail that broke the surface of the water. It was magnificent—thick, snow-white fur marked by ink-black stripes, curling at the tip as it held steady in the air like a poised lash.

Shock turned my blood to ice. Before I could process the truth, my feet were moving, drawing me toward the water's edge. I didn't see the fallen branch until my foot came down—the sharp crack of dry wood echoed like a gunshot across the silent lake. Artemis's head snapped toward me. When she turned, I finally saw them—her eyes. They were a shade of electric blue so piercing they looked like lightning trapped in ice. They didn't just reflect the moonlight; they seemed to generate their own, glowing with a predatory intensity that made the surrounding forest seem dim by comparison. Seeing that ancient, lethal glow directed at me made my heart hammer against my ribs. But as our eyes locked, the predatory fire in those blue depths was suddenly clouded by a flicker of raw fear.

That look hit me harder than any physical blow. A surge of hot anger flared in my chest—not because of the beast she carried, but because she looked at me as if I were a threat. Did she really think so little of me? Did she believe our bond was so fragile that her true nature would break it? She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out; she simply bit her lip, her glowing eyes searching mine for a judgment I hadn't yet decided on.

Kayden closed the distance between the treeline and the water's edge with a predatory grace. The moonlight clung to the broad, muscular expanse of his bare chest, highlighting every hard-won line of his physique. My eyes betrayed me, tracing the vast canvas of his torso down to the sharp lines of his V, before briefly—shamefully—flicking to the visible bulge in his gray shorts. I snapped my gaze back up to his face, my heart hammering against my ribs as he reached the shoreline.

Panic flared in my chest, a desperate urge to flee washing over me, but there was nowhere left to run. As he stood there, towering and silent, the moisture in my mouth completely evaporated. I opened my mouth, but my tongue felt like lead. I took a tentative step backward, wading deeper into the lake as if the extra few inches of water could shield me or give my racing brain a chance to catch up. Kayden's eyes narrowed, one eyebrow arching at my retreat.

"Are you going to tell me why you kept this little fact about yourself a secret?" his voice dropped an octave, vibrating with a jagged edge of anger. I flinched, my tail dropping and curling around my legs as if trying to hide the stripes. "I... it—it wasn't like that," I managed to stammer, my voice sounding small and fragile against the vastness of the night.

She was breathtaking in this form. Her silver hair no longer just reflected the light; it seemed spun from the moon's own rays, radiating a soft, ethereal glow that rivaled the lunar disk above. I watched her eyes dart frantically, scanning the shoreline as if she were a trapped animal searching for an escape route. My jaw clenched. The silent rejection of her gaze stung more than any secret. Without thinking, I surged forward, the sudden, icy embrace of the lake encasing my feet as I stepped into the water.

Artemis's head snapped up. Her electric-blue eyes flared with shock—and then, she took another step back, retreating further into the dark depths to stay away from me. I froze. The anger in my chest curdled into a cold, hollow hurt. I stared at her, my heart heavy with the realization that she was truly afraid of my reaction. I watched her mouth open and close again, the silence between us stretching thin and brittle, as she struggled to find the words to bridge the distance I had just tried to close.

My mind whirled, a chaotic storm of explanations that refused to form into words. My heart hammered against my ribs, but it wasn't just my own distress I was fighting; through the bond of the mark Kayden had given me, his shock and hurt pressed against my chest like a physical weight. I clenched my hands into tight fists, the sharp points of my tiger claws biting deep into my palms. My fangs sank into my bottom lip, the metallic tang of blood blossoming in my mouth before a single bead escaped, trailing down my chin.

Kayden's eyes widened at the sight of the blood. He took a sudden, urgent step toward me, his hand reaching out as if to catch me—but I recoiled, taking another step back into the dark water. He froze. His hand hung in the air for a heartbeat before dropping heavily back to his side, the light in his eyes fracturing into a deeper shade of misery. I looked away, my chest tightening until I could barely breathe. "I... I wasn't keeping it from you," I whispered, the lie of omission tasting as bitter as the blood on my tongue. "I just didn't know how to tell you. I was waiting for the right time."

A harsh, disbelieving scoff broke the silence. "Oh, yes," Kayden's voice dripped with a sarcasm that cut deeper than any blade. "Because your actions right now—retreating as if I'm a monster—really show how you were just waiting for the right moment." I flinched as if he had struck me. I didn't dare look up. Instead, I stared at the moon's reflection, watching the silver rays shatter and dance across the ripples of the water.

I ran my fingers through my hair, the gesture thick with frustration as my mate refused to meet my gaze. I forced a jagged breath from my lungs, trying to exhale the irritation before it poisoned my voice. "How long?" I asked. When she didn't answer, I pressed harder. "How long were you planning on making me wait to find this out, Artemis?" She finally spoke, but her voice was a ghost of its usual strength. "It's not something you just blurt out. It wasn't that I didn't trust you... It's just that most people can't handle it." She paused, her gaze still fixed on the ripples at her feet. "Your kind see the shift as the Goddess's divine power. You practically worship it. But tigers? They see it as a testament to one's own strength—and they try that much harder to break and control those who have it. It's not a gift I broadcast to the world."

The last of my anger disintegrated. Seeing her standing there, looking so fragile against the vastness of the lake, made my chest ache. Since the day I'd met her, she had been a force of nature, but now she looked small—shattered by the weight of her own history. I sighed, my hand dropping from my hair as I softened my stance. "Who else knows?" Her head started to snap up in surprise, but she caught herself, lowering it again as she bit her lip. "Only my parents," she whispered. "And the rogue I killed. Transforming was the only way I could think of to force him to talk about their plans. It wasn't how I wanted it to happen... I didn't want him to see it before I could tell you."

I knew I should have been furious that a lowly, nameless rogue had seen her true form before I did. But as I watched her, a reluctant, amused twitch tugged at the corner of my mouth. Her nervous rambling was unexpectedly... cute. There was a strange sense of victory in knowing that none of those arrogant tiger shifters—especially not that self-absorbed prick, Zander—knew the depth of her power. My amusement faded as I realized she was now waist-deep in the freezing water, her body shivering just to maintain the distance between us. The sight made my heart ache, and my wolf snarled in protest. She shouldn't be retreating from me.

My jaw clenched, and my voice dropped into a low, commanding rumble. "Look at me." I saw her teeth latch onto her lip again, her shoulders hunching as she ignored me, staring stubbornly at the water. She was trying to hide, trying to disappear into the lake. I wasn't going to let her. "Look at me, Artemis," I repeated, my voice leaving no room for argument. It wasn't a request; it was an Alpha's demand, softened only by the raw desperation of a mate who just wanted to see his fire-eyed queen again.

At the sound of my name, my heart clenched. I flinched at the sheer force behind his command and forced a shaky breath into my lungs before finally lifting my head. The moment our eyes met, a familiar silvery-gray mist erupted around his body. I blinked rapidly, certain the moon was playing tricks on my mind, but as the haze evaporated, the truth remained. Kayden stood before me, transformed yet still human. A pair of pointed, jet-black wolf ears sprouted from his dark hair, twitching with a life of their own. Behind him, I caught the rhythmic sway of a heavy, furred tail. His fingernails had sharpened into lethal, obsidian points, and his hair appeared thicker, wilder—as if the beast was fighting to break through his skin. But it was his eyes that truly held me; they were shimmering pools of molten silver, glowing with a majestic intensity that outshone the stars.

He was the only person I had ever met, besides my mother and myself, who possessed this intermediate form. I was frozen, my mind lost in a thick fog of disbelief. I didn't even register him moving until the water rippled against my waist, and he was suddenly there, towering over me. The spell broke the instant his fingers grazed my skin. His hand cupped my chin, his touch firm yet impossibly gentle. With a slow, deliberate motion, he ran his thumb across my bottom lip, catching the bead of blood I'd drawn in my panic. He held my gaze for a heartbeat before dipping his hand into the lake, letting the cool water wash the crimson stain away.

He raised his dripping hand back to my face, his fingers cool as he wiped the remaining trail of blood from my chin. Then, his grip firmed, tipping my head back to force my eyes to meet his. The contact sent a jolt of mate-bond sparks through my skin, a searing heat that defied the icy water surrounding us. His silver eyes held a predatory glint that made my knees weak.

I held my breath as he leaned in. Instead of speaking, he let his tongue sweep across my bottom lip, a slow, deliberate caress that gathered every stray drop of my blood. The sensation sent a sudden, molten heat blooming in the pit of my stomach. My heart hammered against my ribs, a wild bird trapped in a cage. My lips parted instinctively as his tongue glided over the center of my mouth, flickering just slightly past the barrier of my teeth. My eyelids grew heavy, fluttering closed as I began to reach for him, my hands trembling with the urge to lace behind his neck and pull him into a real kiss. But just as the world began to blur, he pulled back.

My eyes snapped open, a small sound of protest dying in my throat. Kayden stood inches away, watching me with that same dark, hungry gleam. He slowly licked his lips, his gaze never wavering. "Sweet," he rumbled, his voice a low vibration that seemed to echo through the water. "You always taste so sweet, Artemis. It's addictive." Heat rushed to my face, my cheeks burning with a fierce blush. I felt exposed, not just by my secret, but by how easily he could undo me with a single look. A smug smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth as he tracked the color rising in my skin, clearly enjoying the effect he had on me.

His thumb glided over the small puncture where my fang had pierced my lip. "You should be more careful," he murmured, his voice dropping into a protective growl. "I don't want to see you hurt—especially not by your own hand." My heart fluttered at the tenderness, but it skipped a beat when he added, "You are mine, Artemis. Nothing and no one is allowed to harm what belongs to me."

The possessiveness in his tone sent a jolt straight to my core, a sudden, heavy heat pooling between my thighs. Before I could find my voice, his free hand snaked around my waist, hauling me flush against him. He kept his fingers firm on my chin, refusing to let me look away. Pressed together, I could feel the hard lines of his body and the unmistakable evidence of his desire straining against his shorts. The warmth radiating from his skin was a stark, intoxicating contrast to the icy lake.

"You never have to hide from me," he vowed, his silver eyes burning with a fierce, absolute sincerity. "I will never use you or your power. I will destroy anyone who even thinks of lifting a hand against you. I love you, Artemis—no matter what form you take. You are my fated mate, my only truth." Tears pricked my eyes as the crushing weight of my secrecy finally dissolved, leaving me light and breathless. I opened my mouth to tell him I loved him, too, but his hand suddenly slipped from my chin. He leaned in, his breath hot against the sensitive shell of my tiger ear. "I've heard," he whispered, his voice thick with a new, dangerous playfulness, "that in this form, the ears and tails are... exceptionally sensitive. Shall we find out if that's true?"

Before I could process his challenge, Kayden straightened, his shadow looming over me. He leaned in and exhaled a slow, hot breath directly against the rounded curve of my tiger ear. A violent shudder raced down my spine as the ear twitched and flattened instinctively against my skull. The moment he stopped, his fingers found the other ear, tracing the velvet edge with a light, agonizingly slow touch. My heart skipped a beat, but before I could find my footing, his hand firmed, his fingers beginning to knead and rub the sensitive fur. A gasp escaped me, my hands flying out to grip his bicep as my legs turned to jelly. Kayden leaned back in, his voice dropping into a husky, primal growl against my skin. "So soft..."

I shivered uncontrollably, the heat of his breath a stark contrast to the lake air. He surged forward, sliding his leg firmly between mine. My breath hitched as he took the tip of my ear into the warm, moist heat of his mouth, his leg rhythmically pressing against my core. My tiger claws scraped against his skin as my grip tightened in desperation. A sharp, breathless cry tore from my throat, echoing across the silent water. "Oh god... Kayden!"

His free hand moved with possessive intent, cupping my breast through the damp fabric of my dress. When his thumb found my hardening nipple, flicking it with expert precision, a sharp gasp broke from my lips, and my back arched instinctively. Kayden pulled his mouth from my ear, a dark chuckle vibrating in his chest. "Your tail is twitching, Artemis. It's giving away exactly how much you're enjoying this." I felt the heat of a flush creep up my neck. He was right; my tail was lashing behind me in a telltale rhythm of excitement. He was teasing me, savoring his control, but at his words, something ancient and predatory stirred in my mind. Tigers are not just prey—they are masters of the game. I had let him lead for long enough.

Reaching up with a sudden, fluid grace, I seized his pointed wolf ear. Kayden's body went rigid instantly. I was momentarily stunned by how soft and plush the fur was, but I didn't let it slow me down. I began to knead and massage the base of his ear, my claws grazing his scalp. A low, sharp hiss of pleasure escaped his throat, and I felt his length jerk against my thigh in a raw, involuntary response. I glanced behind him, seeing his heavy black tail beginning to wag with a frantic, happy energy he couldn't hide. Emboldened, I reached around his waist and wrapped my other hand firmly around the base of his tail. He let out a choked sound, his jaw clenching so hard I thought his teeth might break, as I let my fingers dive deep into the thick, fluffy fur of his most sensitive hidden spot.

I leaned in, pressing my lips to the hard line of his jaw. Kayden turned his head, desperate to claim my mouth, but I evaded him, trailing a path of fire down the column of his throat instead. A low growl of annoyance vibrated through him, and his hands tightened—one anchoring me to his hip, the other pulling my lower body flush against his. I ignored his protest, licking and nibbling at the junction where his neck met his shoulder. Simultaneously, I drew my hand along the full length of his tail, my nails lightly scraping the sensitive skin beneath the plush, black fur. A violent shiver racked his entire frame.

As I nipped the hollow of his shoulder—the very spot where my mark would eventually rest—I slipped my other hand beneath the waistband of his shorts. The moment my fingers curled around his heat, his knees buckled. A raw, guttural growl ripped from his throat. Losing his battle for control, Kayden tangled his fingers in my hair and forced my head back.

His lips clashed against mine in a demanding, forceful kiss that tasted of salt and lightning. His tongue surged past my teeth, exploring every corner of my mouth with an Alpha's hunger. I groaned into him, my hand sliding up the length of his shaft, my nails grazing his skin with deliberate pressure. In that heartbeat, the air around us seemed to fracture. Our minds suddenly merged, a psychic explosion that blurred the lines between us. I gasped against his lips as a wave of pure, unadulterated pleasure crashed through me—not just my own, but his, too. I felt his hunger, his fire, and his absolute devotion as if they were my own blood.

A low, broken groan vibrated from Kayden's throat as the shared psychic pleasure crested between us. His grip on my wrists tightened, and he forced my hand away from his body, his other hand splaying across my back to crush me against him. There was no longer a single inch of space between us. He began to grind his lower body against mine with a slow, agonizing pressure that drew a desperate moan from my lips. My hands flew to his shoulders, my fingers digging into his muscles as my balance faltered.

In one fluid motion, his hand hooked under my thigh, hiking my leg up until it was locked around his hip. The shift allowed him to press the full, heavy heat of his length directly against me. My nails scraped across his skin as I cried out into his mouth, the pleasure sharp and blinding. I felt the hand on my thigh slide inward, his fingertips grazing the sensitive skin of my inner leg before finding the damp lace of my underwear. I sucked at his tongue, my movements becoming aggressive and wild with need. Without a heartbeat of hesitation, his finger slipped past the silk, expertly parting my folds and sinking deep into my heat.

I threw my head back, a raw cry of ecstasy echoing across the moonlit water. My nails dragged down his back, carving shallow paths into his skin, while my striped tail acted on its own accord—lashing out to coil around the very arm that was driving me into the pits of ecstasy. With my neck exposed, Kayden began to trail a series of biting kisses along my jawline. He pumped his finger into my core, the rhythm deliberate and demanding, sending a new wave of fire through the bond. He leaned in, his voice a dark, possessive rumble against my ear. "Good girl," he growled, the sound vibrating through my entire body. "Cry out for me."

The pleasure was building into a blinding storm. I cried out his name again, my voice fracturing across the silent lake. "Oh God! Kayden!" The faint, metallic scent of blood touched my nose—my nails were carving marks into his shoulders—but I couldn't stop. I was lost in the rhythm of his fingers and the heat of his body. Kayden's hand tightened in my hair, his breath hitching as he growled into the shell of my ear. "You are mine!" He pulled back just enough to grip my chin, forcing me to look into those glowing silver eyes. "You only ever cry out like this for me, Artemis. I'll kill anyone who dares to think otherwise. You are mine."

I could only nod, a breathless sob escaping me as he added a second finger, stretching me and sending a fresh jolt of lightning through our merged minds. "Yes! Oh God, yes!" He began to graze his teeth against my bottom lip, his voice a series of rough, punctuated whispers between nibbles. "I... want... you." He ground his lower body against mine with a punishing, desperate force, and I nodded frantically, my body pleading for him to finish what he'd started. Then, abruptly, the pressure vanished.

He withdrew his hand and lowered my leg, his fingers sliding out of my heat with a slow, agonizing drag. As my foot touched the soft, silty bottom of the lake, I blinked, my vision blurry and my chest heaving. "What—?" Kayden shook his head, his pupils blown wide, his wolf ears twitching as he scanned our surroundings. "Not here," he rumbled, his voice thick with restraint. Before I could protest, he seized my hand in a crushing grip, turning and wading toward the far shore. He moved with a renewed sense of purpose, pulling me through the water toward a place where the shadows were deeper, and our privacy was absolute.

The shoreline here rose in a steep, natural shelf of earth, much like the edge of a pool. Standing in the shallows, the grassy ledge reached my waist. I expected Kayden to climb out and offer me a hand, but instead, he tugged me forward, his strength effortless as he hoisted me up onto the soft embankment. Before I could even find my footing, he surged up behind me, the heavy heat of his length pressing firmly against my backside. He caught my wrists, guiding my hands down until my palms were splayed flat against the earth. I felt the cool, damp blades of grass tickle the skin between my fingers, a sharp contrast to the warmth of the man behind me.

His hands began a slow, agonizing journey up the length of my arms, tracing every line until he reached my shoulders. Then, with a firm, steady pressure, he began to push. I followed his lead, my upper body bowing forward until I was leaning over the grassy ledge, my chest nearly flush with the earth. Kayden leaned down, his chest a wall of solid muscle against my back. His breath hitched, hot and ragged against the sensitive shell of my tiger ear. His hands retreated from my shoulders, sliding down the curve of my spine in a slow, possessive crawl that made my tail lash in anticipation.

"I can't risk you drowning," he rumbled, his voice a dark, velvet vibration that seemed to settle in my very bones. "Not when I only just got you back." Just as the words left his lips, his hands reached my hips. He didn't stop there; his fingers slid lower, his palms mapping the curve of my seat before he squeezed, his grip firm and demanding.

One of his hands slipped beneath the sodden hem of my skirt, while the other sought out my tail. He gripped the base, his palm sliding slowly and firmly up the length of the snowy fur until he reached the very tip. A violent shudder racked my frame; the sensation was electric, sending a jolt of heat straight to my core. My breathing fractured, coming in short, needy gasps. I felt his finger hook into the lace of my underwear. Before I could even draw breath, he gave a sharp, authoritative tug. The sound of fabric tearing was a jagged note in the quiet night, and then the cool air hit my skin. Without a moment's hesitation, his hand moved to the front, his fingers parting my folds to find my throbbing clit.

My toes curled into the soft earth as he began to toy with me, his touch precise and demanding. I arched my back, my neck stretching long as Kayden buried his face in the crook of my shoulder. I began to grind my hips back against his weight, seeking the hard pressure of his bulge. As we moved together, that familiar wave of shared pleasure surged through the mind-link—a golden tide of ecstasy that rolled from my mind to his, doubling in intensity before crashing back into me. I felt his hand on my spine, his fingers finding the pull of my zipper.

He drew it down in one smooth motion until it caught at my waist. The dress loosened, and he wasted no time slipping his hand inside the fabric to cup my breast. A broken moan tore from my throat as he synchronized his movements—sinking a finger deep into my slick core at the exact moment he pinched my nipple. The dual sensation was an explosion of white-hot light behind my eyelids, making my tiger ears pin back as I lost all sense of where I ended and he began.

The pressure in my core was reaching a breaking point, a wild, demanding need to feel him truly inside me. I reached behind me, my fingers curling around his heat and sliding up the length of his shaft. Kayden sucked in a sharp, ragged breath. He moved with a growl, shoving the dress off my shoulder to expose the mark he'd claimed me with. The second his tongue swept over the sensitive skin of the bond, a bolt of pure electricity shot through my body. Thanks to our merged minds, the sensation magnified, echoing back and forth between us until we both cried out into the night air. Suddenly, Kayden withdrew his fingers. He seized my wrists, pinning my hands back to the damp earth in a dominant display of strength. I felt the grass beneath my palms again, grounding me as he released my hands to grip my hips.

I glanced back over my shoulder as I watched him shove his shorts down. His length sprang free, dark and imposing in the moonlight. He didn't wait; his hands locked onto my waist with bruising intensity as he surged forward, plunging into me in one deep, devastating stroke. A broken moan shattered the silence as he filled me completely. My head lolled back, but Kayden caught me. He tangled his fingers into the roots of my hair, tugging my head back and twisting it until I was forced to look into the silver fire of his eyes. Before I could even draw a breath, his mouth crashed against mine. It was a demanding, hungry kiss that claimed my very breath, his tongue forcing its way past my lips to taste the cry of pleasure still vibrating in my throat.

Kayden's hand slipped through the opening of my dress, his fingers kneading and squeezing my breast with a desperate, rhythmic intensity as he continued to pound into me. He released my hair, his palm sliding down my spine to find the slick, swollen heat of my core. He began to rub small, torturous circles over my clit, and I cried out into his mouth, my nails clawing deep into the dark earth in front of me.

The tension between us was no longer a thread; it was a live wire, humming with a frequency that threatened to shatter my very bones. Through the bond, I felt his own desperation climbing—a jagged, white-hot peak we were both racing toward. We were seconds away from the edge. Suddenly, Kayden broke the kiss, a guttural sound tearing from his throat. He pressed my upper body down until I was flush against the cool, fragrant grass, his hands locking onto my hips like iron shackles. He surged into me with a sudden, relentless speed, his pace becoming a blurred, punishing rhythm that left me breathless.

My nails dug deeper into the soil, my body arching in a desperate attempt to get closer to his heat. Just as the pleasure became too much to bear—just as I felt my soul reach its breaking point—something inside the bond snapped. A primal cry ripped from my lungs as my body was seized by the violent, beautiful power of an all-consuming climax. The world dissolved. The moonlight, the lake, and even Kayden's silver eyes vanished as the darkness finally claimed my vision, pulling me under into a deep, silent void where only the two of us existed.

*

When my vision finally cleared, I realized I was still looming over Artemis, my weight pressing her into the damp earth. I straightened slowly, my muscles protesting as I fought with my water-logged shorts, tugging the heavy fabric back over my hips. I glanced at the sky; the moon remained high and indifferent, as if the world-shaking event we'd just shared had occupied only a heartbeat of time. We were still half-shifted. I watched one of her rounded tiger ears twitch as a stray breeze rustled the leaves nearby. Looking down at her—draped over the ledge exactly as I'd positioned her—a fresh jolt of heat hit my gut, my body instantly hardening in response to the memory. I gritted my teeth against the urge to sink back into her warmth; the lake water was growing colder by the second, and I wouldn't risk her health after she'd only just recovered.

Before I could reach for her, I felt her body stiffen. She lifted her head, her gaze scanning the dark treeline before finally settling on me. The second our eyes met, a soft, sleepy smile ghosted across her lips. My heart skipped a beat—she looked devastatingly cute, a stark contrast to the fierce predator she had been moments ago. She stretched with a fluid, feline grace, standing fully and turning toward me without losing that smile. It was only then that I saw the aftermath of our passion: a smudge of dark earth marked her cheek, and the front of her white dress—the one she'd looked so divine in—was ruined, coated in mud from the ledge. A sharp prick of guilt pierced my chest. It had been my idea to keep her there, driven by a desperate need that couldn't wait for us to reach dry land.

I cupped a palmful of lake water and moved toward her. Artemis watched my hand with wide, curious eyes, but the moment my wet finger brushed her skin, she flinched. The water had grown significantly colder, or perhaps the fire that had been consuming us just minutes ago had simply left us more sensitive to the night's chill. "Easy," I murmured, leaning in. This time, she held still, allowing me to splash the cool water against her cheek. I watched the dark streaks of earth dissolve and run down her jaw. I used the pad of my thumb to gently wipe away the remaining grit, dipping my hand back into the lake to rinse it before polishing the last stray smudge from her skin.

As my hand dropped back to my side, she arched an eyebrow, a familiar, snarky spark returning to her eyes. "Get it all now?" A half-smile tugged at my lips. Her impatient, slightly bratty tone was a welcome sign that she was truly back to herself. "Yes, I got it," I replied, though my gaze drifted down to the front of her dress. "I managed to save your face, but I can't say the same for the rest of you." Artemis looked down, finally taking in the mud-caked state of her white dress. I braced myself for a complaint or a frustrated sigh—after all, it was a beautiful garment—but she simply shrugged. "Oh well," she said, her voice light and unbothered. "If we're lucky, it'll come out in the wash. If not? We can always buy another. This is exactly why I don't wear white very often."

A wicked smirk spread across her lips. "Besides," she added, her eyes dancing with mischief, "if anyone asks about the mess, you can just tell them the truth: that we were rolling around in the dirt. Let their imaginations do the rest. I doubt they'll ever ask another question once they realize they don't want the answer." My eyebrows shot up. "I definitely didn't expect those words to come out of your mouth."

She arched a brow, her gaze challenging. "What? Do you not enjoy it when I openly flirt with you like this, Alpha?" I chuckled, the sound low and captivated. "I didn't say that. I just said I wasn't expecting it." Artemis didn't give me a chance to recover. She rose onto her tiptoes, her fingers digging into my shoulders to steady herself as she leaned in. Her breath was a warm, sweet hum against my ear. "Good," she whispered, her voice a sultry promise. "Because I like keeping you on your toes. I couldn't possibly have you getting bored around me."

Before the last word had even faded, I felt the wet, hot glide of her tongue against my earlobe. She drew it into her mouth, her teeth grazing the sensitive skin in a sharp, playful nibble. A guttural groan escaped me. My hands snapped to her waist, hauling her flush against me as my body instantly betrayed my earlier thoughts of restraint. The cold water was forgotten as my erection sprang back to life, thrumming with a need that was even more intense now that she was the one hunting me.

Her mouth began to trail from my ear toward my neck, but I didn't give her the satisfaction of finishing her hunt. My hands tightened on her hips, and in one smooth motion, I hoisted her upward. She instinctively tried to hook her legs around my waist, but I carried her higher, setting her firmly on the grassy ledge of the embankment. She sat there, safely out of the water, with the damp silk of her white dress clinging to her long, elegant legs. Her feet dangled just inches above the surface, the moonlight catching the droplets of water on her skin. She stared down at me with a look of pure confusion—one I found so incredibly cute that I couldn't stop my lips from twitching into a smile.

Her mouth opened as if she were about to demand an explanation, but I cut her off. "The water is getting chilly, Artemis. I don't need you catching a cold, especially not when you've only just recovered from your injury." Her expression softened, a look of deep affection replacing her confusion. "That's sweet, Kayden," she murmured, a playful tilt to her head. "But we have higher immune systems and body temperatures than regular humans. I doubt something as insignificant as a midnight dip could make one of our kind sick." I took a step closer to the ledge, standing between her knees as I cupped her cheek in my palm. She leaned into my touch instantly, closing her eyes for a brief second. "Still," I rumbled, my voice thick with a sudden, heavy sincerity. "I can't take any risks with you. You are far too important for me to even consider it."

A soft, genuine smile lit up her face. "That really is sweet," she whispered. I returned the smile, my heart full, before dropping my hand from her cheek. I braced my palms on either side of her hips and hauled myself out of the lake. As I cleared the water, the weight of the sodden fabric was too much; my shorts surrendered to gravity, sliding down my legs to pool around my ankles. I knelt before her on the grass, a curse caught in my throat. But before I could reach down to fix them, Ari's hand snaked out.

The moment her fingers curled around my shaft, my hips buckled. A jolt of pure, white-hot pleasure screamed through my nervous system. My eyes snapped to hers, finding her lips curved into a devastatingly wicked smile. Her gaze was no longer just affectionate; it was raw, primal, and predatory. In the water, we had been reacting to the bond, but here, in the moonlight, our animal instincts had taken the lead, stripping away every shred of hesitation. "Allow me to show you," she purred, her voice a low vibration that made my skin crawl with anticipation, "just how much your words meant to me."

She slid her hand slowly, agonizingly, up the length of me. A broken groan escaped my lips, and my eyes drifted shut as the pleasure surged upward like a tide. I felt her shift closer, her warmth radiating against my chest just before her lips pressed into the base of my neck. She trailed a path of searing kisses up toward my jaw, her movements deliberate and slow. I growled softly, my body trembling when I felt her thumb glide over the tip before she squeezed, dragging her palm back down to the base. Every motion was a calculated strike, designed to push me toward the precipice. When I forced my eyes open, I saw the shimmering silver of her eyes—she was watching me, savoring the way she could undo me with nothing but her touch.

The pleasure was a mounting storm, and when her teeth grazed my chin in a sharp, playful nip, my restraint finally snapped. I growled, a deep sound that echoed from my chest, and lunged forward. I seized the damp shoulders of her white dress, jerking the fabric down. Her perfect, rounded breasts were freed from the silk, baring them to the moonlight and my hungry gaze.

In the same movement, I pinned the fabric against her upper arms, effectively trapping her hands at her sides and ending her delicious torment. Before she could struggle or try to free herself, my hands replaced the dress, kneading and squeezing her soft skin with a possessive heat. Ari went still for a heartbeat before her back arched off the grass, her body leaning into my touch as a low, needy moan vibrated through the air. I didn't wait. I pressed her back into the earth, the emerald blades of grass cushioning her as I leaned down to capture one of those rosy peaks in my mouth. She cried out, the sound sharp and sweet, as I began to suckle and toy with her. I wedged my knee between her thighs, forcing them apart to make room for me.

As my mouth traveled to her other breast, my hand snaked beneath the hem of her skirt, sliding up the velvet skin of her inner thigh. She gasped, her breath hitching when my finger found her folds and traced a small, agonizing circle over her bud of excitement. The moment I slid my finger deep into her core, the air seemed to hum. Our minds merged once more, a psychic explosion that blurred our identities. Her pleasure hit me like a physical wave—white-hot, electric, and overwhelming. I felt the vibration of her cry in my own throat as her body bucked against the ground, her ecstasy washing over me until I couldn't tell whose heart was beating the fastest.

Her nails clawed into the soil at her sides, and I felt the desperate pull of her mind against mine—she was starving for my lips. Instead of giving in, I let her breast fall from my mouth with a soft, wet sound and pressed a lingering kiss directly against her mark. The contact acted like a lightning rod, sending a devastating wave of pleasure through the bond that doubled and tripled in intensity as it echoed between us.

I nipped at the marked skin, savoring the raw power of the connection, when I suddenly felt her hands snap to the back of my thighs. With the sudden, explosive strength of a hunting cat, she yanked. My balance shattered. I felt myself tipping backward toward the water, but before I could fall, Ari surged upward. She threw her entire weight against my chest, forcing my body to twist in mid-air until I slammed onto my back against the grass.

I lay there for a heartbeat, blinking at the stars and wondering how I'd been so easily overtaken. Then, Ari was there, straddling my hips with a predatory grace. I watched, mesmerized, as she worked her arms free from the tangled neckline of her dress, letting the fabric bunch around her waist. She sat there, bared to the moonlight and beautiful enough to stop my heart. A sharp hiss of pleasure escaped me as her hand wrapped around my member, guiding me to her heat. Just as my hands found her waist, she began to sink down, taking me in with a slow, agonizing deliberation. We both groaned in unison, a guttural sound that vibrated through our merged minds as her tight warmth closed around me, inch by excruciating inch, until I was buried deep within her. My hands flew up to her breasts, kneading the soft weight of her as she began to move, her body setting a rhythm that made the world around us go up in flames.

With every rhythmic stroke, Ari drove us closer to the abyss. I couldn't stay pinned to the ground any longer; I surged into a sitting position, my hands locking onto the back of her head to pull her into a fierce, demanding kiss. Our tongues clashed with a desperate hunger as she lowered herself fully, the friction sending sparks through the bond. I began to thrust my hips upward to meet her, each motion driving me deeper until the world started to blur at the edges. I trailed a line of biting kisses down the column of her throat, my hand finding the sensitive bud of her excitement while my other pinched her nipple. The dual sensation was a lightning strike to our shared consciousness.

In that final, breathless moment, my instincts took over. I sank my teeth into her shoulder, right over the mark I had given her. The connection flared white-hot, an explosion of pleasure so intense it felt like my heart had stopped. Ari arched her back, a raw cry dying in her throat as she sank her own teeth into the muscle of my shoulder. She wasn't marking me—not yet—but the bite was a primal anchor, muffling her screams of ecstasy as the dam finally broke. We clung to each other as the all-consuming waves of the climax crashed over us, our minds and bodies merging into a single, shimmering point of light before we finally collapsed together into the darkness of oblivion.

When I opened my eyes this time, the world was quiet. I was draped awkwardly against Kayden's chest, the damp, ruined silk of my dress bunched around my waist and digging into my skin. Before I could even shift to attempt to remove the dress or to find a more comfortable position, I felt his fingers—warm and steady—drawing slow, soothing circles against the small of my back. I lifted my head, a tired but genuine smile tugging at my lips. "Well," I breathed, my voice slightly raspy. "That was... nice." A deep, rumbling laugh vibrated through Kayden's chest, and I felt the tension leave his body as he opened his eyes to look at me. "Yes," he agreed, his voice thick with affection. "It certainly was." He cupped my cheek, his thumb grazing my skin with a reverence that made my heart ache. "I love you, Artemis."

"I love you too, Kayden." He tilted my chin up, meeting me halfway for a kiss. It wasn't like the demanding, forceful ones from before; this was tender, a soft seal on the promises we were making. Even so, the mate bond didn't care for subtlety—sparks erupted the moment our lips touched, drawing a simultaneous sigh of contentment from both of us. When he pulled back, he leaned his head against the grass, staring up at the moon. It hung much lower now, a silver sliver signaling that the night was finally reaching its end. "I hope you know you don't have to keep anything from me ever again," he said, his tone turning serious. "I will always stand by your side. We might not always see eye-to-eye, and our natures might clash, but I will never stop loving you. You aren't alone in this anymore."

My heart swelled, the bond hummed with a warmth so intense I could almost feel my love for him physically growing, expanding to fill the space where my secrets used to hide. "I promise," I said, leaning my forehead against his. "No more secrets. Besides, you've seen it all now. There isn't much left for me to hide even if I wanted to."

He shook his head, his eyes shining with a mixture of adoration and a future he was clearly already picturing. "No," he corrected softly. "I think I'll be learning something new about you every single day for the rest of our lives. And Artemis? I can't wait to experience every second of it." Happy tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, blurring the moonlight. "That sounds wonderful," I whispered.

Kayden reached up, catching a stray tear with his thumb before cupping my face in both of his large, warm hands. "I will love you," he vowed, his voice a low, steady anchor in the night, "until the day I take my last breath." I turned my head slightly, pressing a kiss into the center of his palm. "I feel the same way, Kayden. I love you more than I ever thought was possible."

Suddenly, he shifted. He released my face and wrapped his arms around me, his strength effortless as he rolled us over. In a heartbeat, I was lying flat on my back against the soft grass, and he was hovering over me, a protective shadow against the stars. He leaned down, pressing a tender kiss to my forehead, then to each of my closed eyelids. He lingered there, his breath warm on my skin, before kissing the tip of my nose and resting his forehead against mine.

"You make me the happiest man on this earth," he rumbled. "I thank the Moon Goddess for you every day. I swear to you, Artemis, I will do everything in my power to ensure no one ever threatens or hurts you again—even if I have to sell my soul to the devil to keep you safe." I tilted my head up, pressing my forehead firmly back against his, my heart aching with a love so fierce it was almost painful. "I know you would," I whispered into the space between us. "And I love you even more for it. But promise me you'll stay safe, too. I don't want to live in a world where you aren't by my side."

He nodded, a solemn vow in his eyes. "Always. I will never leave you, Artemis, and I will never risk losing you again." I tightened my arms around his neck, pulling him a fraction closer. "Don't worry, my love. I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying right by your side, and together, we will find a way to end Zander and his men." A pleased, predatory grin twitched across his lips. "I'm glad we're finally on the same page." He lowered his head, nuzzling his face into the sensitive crook of my neck. "Don't ever think you have to run to protect me again. We can figure out anything as long as we're together. You don't have to carry the weight of the world on your own."

I felt my toes curl as his tongue swept over my skin. It was the primal side of him—the wolf—wanting to taste and claim every inch of me, sending a sharp shockwave of pleasure through the bond. I fought to keep my voice steady, trying to focus on the future even as my body hummed with his touch. "I think... I should hold classes for the pack. I need to prepare them for what's coming, to teach them how to fight tigers." Kayden didn't stop his trail of kisses; he moved upward toward my jaw, his voice a low rumble against my skin between each touch. "I think that's a wonderful idea. You are this pack's Luna. You have every right to train the warriors—or anyone else you choose. You are welcome to do anything you wish, my love."

He reached my ear, his breath hot and possessive. "And if anyone dares to defy or disrespect you? You tell me, and I will deal with them personally." As he finished, he caught my earlobe between his teeth, scraping lightly against the sensitive skin. My hands locked around his neck, my fingers tangling in his hair as another wave of white-hot pleasure crashed through me, erasing the cold of the night and leaving only the fire of our shared soul.

"Aren't we trying to have a discussion, Kayden?" I gasped, my voice trembling. "You're being... remarkably distracting." A low, dark rumble of a chuckle vibrated in his chest. His hand moved with possessive intent, squeezing my breast before his thumb grazed the hardening peak. "We are talking, my love," he murmured against my skin.

I groaned as his knee pressed firmly against my core, the pressure sending a jolt of lightning through me. He trailed slow, agonizing kisses along my jaw, descending toward my lips with predatory patience. I could feel my own arousal slicking my thighs, my body betraying my attempt at logic. "If you want to continue this," I managed to whisper, "we should probably move to the bedroom." He stopped just inches from my mouth, his silver eyes locking onto mine with a heat that felt like it could burn. "Don't worry," he rumbled. "We will." He leaned forward, capturing my bottom lip and sucking on it until I was breathless, before dragging his teeth across the sensitive flesh. "Eventually."

In one fluid motion, his fingers slipped through my folds to find my clit, while his other hand reclaimed my other breast. My back arched sharply off the grass, the cool night air hitting my skin just as he leaned in to whisper against my ear. "I plan to ensure you can never even think about leaving me again," he growled, his voice a dark, velvet promise. "And if the thought ever crosses your mind, I'll fuck you until you can no longer stand. I'll make sure you remember exactly where you belong." A violent shiver of pleasure racked my spine at his words—a mix of fear and absolute, soul-deep desire. Before I could even attempt a reply, his mouth crashed against mine in a demanding, territorial kiss. He drove a finger deep inside me, his thumb working in a rhythmic, punishing pace against my bud of excitement. I cried out into his mouth, my mind fracturing as every thought of war, tigers, and training vanished, replaced by the overwhelming reality of him.
