Chapter 72 - The Weight of Choosing

The territory did not return to normal.

That was the first thing Aurelia understood when the morning came.

No tremor shook the ground. No shadow gathered beyond the boundary. The carved line on the oak remained exactly where it had been the night before—quiet, deliberate, unchanged.

But the silence inside the territory had shifted.

It was no longer the uneasy quiet of fear.

It was the quiet of decision.

Aurelia walked the lower ridge slowly, boots brushing the damp grass while the sun crept over the treeline. Wolves were already awake, moving through the grounds with a different rhythm than before.

More deliberate.

More aware.

They were no longer waiting to see what would happen.

They were adjusting to what already had.

Behind her, Mira followed without speaking.

After a while she said quietly, "They're watching you again."

Aurelia did not turn.

"Yes."

"Not the way they did before."

"No," Aurelia agreed.

Before, the pack had watched with suspicion.
