Chapter 17 - Day 17: The Student council

Lunch bell rang.

And immediately—

"Lane White. Student Council requests your presence."

Of course they do.

I stared at the messenger like maybe if I didn't blink, this timeline would collapse and I could go eat in peace.

Nope.

Still here.

I stood up, grabbed my bag, and mentally sighed.

Alright, I thought as I walked down the corridor and already seen infinite outcomes of this moment, let's review the futures I already skimmed.

Outcome A: Recruitment Arc

They smile. They praise. They offer power, status, responsibility. I decline. They insist. I decline harder.

Outcome B: Beef Arc

Someone's ego gets bruised. Words get sharp. Auras flare. Property damage happens. Dad's wallet cries.

Outcome C: President Fight Arc

We spar. He loses. The universe laughs. They appoint me as president.

I deny that outcome over my dead body.

Seriously. I will punch fate before I sit on a council throne.

I stopped in front of the massive doors.

Gold-trimmed. Inscribed with sigils of authority, balance, and "we run this place."

I pushed them open.

Every conversation stopped.

Inside sat the Six Heavenly Stars.

And five others—new members, advisors, high-rank elites. Their name tags confirmed it. All Japanese. All terrifyingly competent.

Chiyo Watanabe leaned against the table, arms crossed, twin-tails flicking like annoyed flames.

Charlet Frost sat quietly, ice-blue eyes calm, presence freezing the air just enough to remind everyone she existed.

Minato Sato lounged casually, lightning faintly crackling along his fingers.

Aoto Tanaka stood straight-backed, sword at his side, aura sharp and disciplined.

Shizu Nakamura was… hard to look at. Shadows didn't cling to her. They obeyed her.

And at the head of the table—

Haoran Liu.

Oh boy.

If "main character energy" were a disease, he'd be patient zero.

Tall. Perfect posture. Calm expression. Aura layered and refined—Grand Tier Mana, Enlightenment Realm cultivation, harmonized like the world had personally tuned him. The kind of guy destiny writes fanfiction about.

I could feel the narrative trying to push him forward.

I hated it already.

"Lane White," Haoran said, voice smooth, warm, dangerously reasonable. "Thank you for coming."

I closed the door behind me. "You called. I answered. Can I eat now?"

Aoto blinked.

Minato snorted.

Chiyo's eye twitched.

Charlet's lips curved faintly.

Haoran smiled. "Straightforward. I like that."

I didn't sit. "Let's skip the ceremony. Which outcome are we doing?"

"…Outcome?" Minato asked.

I waved it off. "Never mind. Just talk."

Haoran gestured to a seat. I ignored it.

"Lane," he continued, "you've caused… ripples."

"That's one word for it."

"You shattered a combat arena."

"Accident."

"You defeated Rei Kurokami."

"I stopped her."

"You repelled a high demon commander."

That one made the room go still.

Chiyo snapped her head toward him. "A what?"

"Second Command," Haoran said calmly. "Confirmed."

Charlet finally looked at me directly. "…You fought her alone?"

I shrugged. "She broke into my house. Rude."

Silence.

Even Shizu's shadows stilled.

Haoran folded his hands. "You understand why you're here."

"Yeah," I said. "You want to either recruit me, threaten me, or test me."

Minato raised a brow. "Damn, she's blunt."

"I don't have the energy to be polite," I replied. "Pick one."

Haoran studied me—not with hostility, not with fear.

With interest.

"Recruitment," he said at last.

I immediately raised my hand. "No."

Chiyo scoffed. "You didn't even hear the offer."

"I don't need to."

Haoran chuckled. "Humor me."

I sighed. "Fine. Humor granted."

"We want you on the Student Council," he said. "Your presence alone stabilizes—or destabilizes—the power balance of the academy. With you inside the system, we can manage the fallout."

I stared at him.

"…You think I fit inside a system?"

The temperature dropped.

Haoran didn't flinch. "I think you choose restraint. That makes you compatible with order."

"Wrong," I said quietly. "I choose restraint because I care about people. Not because I respect structures."

Aoto frowned. "That's a dangerous distinction."

"I know."

Haoran leaned forward. "Join us. No throne. No command. Just a seat. Influence without chains."

Minato added, "And resources. Protection for your family. Favors. Information."

Ah.

There it is.

I shook my head. "Still no."

Chiyo slammed a hand on the table. "You're rejecting us like it's nothing!"

"It is nothing," I replied. "I didn't come here to rule a school."

Charlet spoke softly. "Then what do you want?"

I thought of my mom. My dad. Jason yelling at my console. Elena smiling over tea.

"I want to go to class," I said. "Eat lunch. Play games. Protect my friends. And not be dragged into politics every five minutes."

Haoran laughed quietly. "You really are infuriating."

"Thank you."

He stood.

Aura flared—controlled, brilliant, impressive.

"Then let me ask you one thing, Lane White."

Here it comes.

"If the balance breaks… if something threatens this world… will you act?"

I met his gaze.

Not challenging. Not defiant.

Honest.

"Yes."

The air shifted.

Haoran nodded slowly. "That's enough."

Chiyo opened her mouth. "President—!"

He raised a hand.

"Lane White," he said, "you are not joining the Student Council."

Good.

"But you are now under its non-interference protection."

I blinked. "…What?"

"You will not be provoked. Tested. Or coerced by council members or affiliates."

Minato whistled. "That's unprecedented."

"Because she is," Haoran replied.

He looked at me one last time.

"Go eat lunch."

I didn't wait for permission.

I turned and walked out.

As the doors closed behind me, I heard Minato mutter:

"So… we just let the walking apocalypse roam free?"

Haoran's voice followed, calm and certain.

"She was already doing that."

I stepped into the hallway, exhaled, and checked the time.

Still had fifteen minutes.

Nice.

Jason was gonna owe me fries for this.

And somewhere, deep in the tangled web of fate—

Every path just got a little more uncertain.
