Evan had four possible Development Abilities to choose from: [Hunter], [Chain Attack], [Mind Recovery], and [Misfortune].
In his view, these were basically "passive skills"—you could only obtain them when you leveled up, and you could also continue upgrading them by doing the corresponding "actions."
Like how [Smithing] improved by forging weapons and armor, [Mixing] improved by brewing potions, [Fist Fighting] improved by punching people, and so on.
And sometimes, truly rare abilities could appear.
For example, [Mystery], whose exact effect was still unknown and could only be broadly described as "capable of creating miracles even the gods cannot comprehend."
Or [Tyrant Strike], which enhanced so-called "special moves," greatly increasing their damage and destructive power.
Or [Luck], which somehow—by fate—helped you escape danger, find treasures, get more material drops, or even survive when all hope seemed lost.
Because of that, [Development Abilities] could be an enormous boost for adventurers—so long as they fit your fighting style.
Evan actually got two Development Abilities that were rare… but in a way that made it hard to laugh without choking.
One was [Mind Recovery]. It slowly restored mental energy over time—practically mandatory for mages and magic swordsmen who relied on spells. Evan guessed it appeared because he used combat arts so often, and those arts were abilities "read" by his magic [Perfect Control]—each use still consumed mana, so it made sense.
The other, [Misfortune], was even harder to judge.
Goddess Astrea didn't know it. Even Demeter—an ancient goddess and one of the earliest to descend to the lower world—had never seen it. There wasn't even a record of it in the Guild.
Evan didn't know what to say.
If he picked it, would the Dungeon hate him even more?
Was it basically an option to crank the difficulty even higher?
Come on, man. I'm still a new character. Don't do this to me.
The remaining two—[Hunter] and [Chain Attack]—were both common and useful.
[Hunter] was obtained by killing large numbers of the same species of monster. It was practically a standard Development Ability. Simply put: the more goblins you killed, the more all your stats improved when fighting goblins.
It was extremely popular—especially among adventurers who camped on a particular floor and "farmed" monsters for years. The gains were huge.
The type of people who kept pushing deeper, challenging themselves and exploring their limits, were always the minority.
For most adventurers, it was just a high-paying, flexible job. In the middle floors, there were many who stayed there long-term farming monsters and materials, earning far more than ordinary labor ever could.
[Chain Attack] was simpler: it boosted damage and destructive power when you continuously attacked the same target.
It was beloved by adventurers who fought in high-speed styles.
While eating roasted potatoes with Anya, Evan thought it through carefully. First, he eliminated the wrong answer: [Mind Recovery]. Someone like Lefiya would definitely need it, but Evan didn't currently feel short on mental energy, and there was no need to pick it just to save money on potions. If he ever started feeling strained later, he could choose it at a future level-up.
If he kept fighting the same way, it would probably show up again later anyway.
He also eliminated [Misfortune]. It was rare enough to feel like it had been tailor-made for a reincarnator like him—but he didn't need to make things harder for himself right now. Same logic: if he ever needed it later, he could pick it then.
So between [Hunter] and [Chain Attack]…
Evan still felt [Chain Attack] was better.
Because he needed to keep exploring deeper into the Dungeon. He wasn't going to spend huge amounts of time farming on the same floor, and who even knew whether those special monsters counted as "the same species" as normal monsters?
For example, the boss behind the mist gate on the third floor—did that count as a "Dungeon Lizard," or a "Beastman," or a "Minotaur," or a "Kobold"?
For him right now, the real problem was first encounters—with new monsters and bosses.
Once he understood an enemy's moves and traits, the threat dropped drastically. So [Hunter] wouldn't help much.
By elimination, the answer was obvious:
[Chain Attack].
And the "Echo" magic he'd acquired should count as "continuous attacks" too, right?
What do you call that?
That's called an extra independent multiplier.
Evan understood the game.
If you wanted damage to explode, the key was stacking multipliers.
And clearly, [Chain Attack] would amplify his current strongest finishing move quite a lot…
