Chapter 63 - Apex’s Warning

Silence.

Not peaceful. Not empty.Just aftershock silence—the kind that follows something too big,too impossible, too heavy for the brain to file neatly.

Kayden sat trembling in the half-broken chair.Alex held onto him like he was afraid Kayden might vanish into thin air.Phineas was pacing in tiny, panicked circles.

"She just—she literally just—walked through a LINE in reality.Like a human PNG file."He ran a hand through his hair."We should be dead."

Alex ignored him.

His focus was entirely on Kayden.

"You okay?"His voice was soft.Steady.Too steady for what had just happened.

Kayden nodded small, fast movements.

"I… I think so."

But his voice cracked at the edges.

The room creaked quietly. Some lights flickered back on.The last of the Agent's presence evaporated like cold vapor.

And the moment she was gone—

APEX surged.

Not violently.Not chaotically.

With purpose.

A precise hum crawled through Kayden's skull.

Kayden's breath hitched.

"Alex," he whispered."APEX is—it's trying to—"

He didn't finish the sentence.

APEX did:

"Operator."

Kayden stiffened.

Alex's eyes widened.

"…that's it, isn't it?" he whispered."That voice. Apex."

Kayden nodded.

Phineas froze mid-pace.

"Oh no. No. I'm hearing it too, aren't I? Please tell me this isn't a group chat—"

APEX ignored him.

The voice threaded directly into Kayden:

"You have made an uncalculated decision."

Kayden swallowed.

"I know."

Alex leaned closer.

"What's it saying?"

Kayden hesitated.

"It's… disappointed?"

APEX corrected instantly:

"Not disappointment.Correction."

Kayden winced at the cold logic.

"Okay, fine—correction. Same thing."

Alex frowned.

"Why? He made the right choice. He's not going with that… thing."

Phineas flailed an arm.

"Yeah, APEX, sorry dude—but cosmic lady equals DO NOT FOLLOW. I feel like that's pretty baseline."

APEX finally addressed them both.

"You misunderstand the consequence of refusal."

Alex stiffened.

Phineas's humor evaporated.

Kayden whispered:

"…what consequence?"

APEX paused.

Kayden felt the pause.A calculation.A probability map.A line tracing itself across possibilities.

Then—

"The Agent does not stop because you said 'no.'"

Kayden's stomach fell.

Alex's grip tightened.

Phineas whispered:

"Oh please don't say she's coming back with a planet-sized laser—"

APEX continued:

"Refusal changes the timing of extraction. Not the extraction itself."

Kayden's heart clenched.

"What do you mean timing…?"

APEX answered:

"She will return when you destabilize again.Your instability rate remains above safety threshold."

Kayden felt a tremor race up his spine.

"So the next time I lose control—the next time APEX surges—she'll come back…stronger?"

"Correct."

Alex exhaled sharply.

"Then we don't let him destabilize. Ever again."

Phineas made a choking noise.

"'Ever again'? Alex—he just melted a door with emotions!"

APEX pulsed harder.

"Operator.There is additional danger."

Kayden's breath stilled.

"What danger?"

A beat.

Then the lights flickered.

Twice.

And APEX's tone dropped—colder, weighted, like it was bracing Kayden for impact.

"SRD is mobilizing Omega Protocol."

Alex went pale.

"What… what is that?"

Kayden didn't know. But every nerve in his body reacted like someone had just opened a trapdoor under him.

Phineas swallowed.

"Omega Protocol…that sounds like the kind of thing governments use when aliens land or someone grows a second head."

APEX clarified:

"Omega Protocol is the termination procedurefor anomalies that exhibit uncontrollable resonance."

Kayden froze.

Alex froze.

Phineas whispered:

"…termination…?They're going to—Kayden—"

APEX continued before panic could take the room:

"They believe your resonance surge was intentional."

Kayden's breath fractured.

"No—no, it wasn't—they have to know—I didn't mean—"

APEX cut in sharply:

"Intention is irrelevant to SRD containment doctrine."

Kayden squeezed his eyes shut.

Alex shook his head violently.

"No. They won't kill him. They won't. We're taking him out of here before that happens."

Phineas nodded.

"Yeah—new plan. Time to jailbreak the walking war-battery."

Kayden winced.

"Phin, please don't call me that."

APEX pushed again—insistent.

"Operator.Warning level: critical."

Kayden inhaled shakily.

"What now?"

The hum sharpened like metal being drawn across stone.

"If Omega Protocol activates, the Agent will intervenebefore SRD can complete termination."

Alex blinked.

"Intervene… how?"

APEX's tone flattened completely.

"Extraction.By force."

Kayden's chest tightened painfully.

He whispered:

"So either SRD kills me…or she takes me."

The room fell silent.

Even Phineas had nothing to say.

Then APEX delivered the final warning:

"Your refusal has accelerated both timelines."

Kayden's eyes filled with tears.

Alex brushed a hand through his hair, trembling.

"Then we change the timeline," he whispered."We break the script."

Phineas nodded hard.

"We don't let SRD get to him.And we don't let cosmic PDF lady get to him either."

Alex squeezed Kayden's hand.

"You stay with us. That's the timeline."

Kayden whispered:

"…I don't know if I can choose against her again."

APEX surprised him.

"You already did."

Kayden blinked.

"And choice becomes easierevery time a mind repeats it."

Alex smiled weakly.

"See? Even your scary war-AI believes in you."

APEX ignored that.

"Prepare.SRD is thirty seconds from breach."

Phineas groaned.

"OH GREAT. BACK TO PANIC MODE."

Alex stood.

"Kayden, I'm not letting anything touch you."

Kayden tried to stand.

His legs shook.

But he stood anyway.

Even if it was barely.

"…then let's move."

The room hummed with rising danger.

All three arcs—SRD,the Agent,and APEX—were converging again.

And this time,Kayden wasn't trembling in a chair.

He was awake.

And he was choosing.
