Chapter 35 - The Woman on the Roof

The city lights steadied into that same unnatural blue as the Citadel route resumed.Every streetlamp flickered in rhythm like a pulse only one organization on Earth could control.

Phineas walked fast, calculating a hundred contingencies through clenched teeth.Alex kept close to Kayden, fingers trembling, heart in his throat.

Kayden… Kayden just watched the blue path. His eyes were focused, but somewhere deeper — beneath fear, beneath instinct — there was something else.

Recognition.

APEX vibrated inside his vision like a system trying not to collapse.

"Commander… external presence detected.Resonance signature: non-hostile.Tier: beyond SRD classification."

Alex whispered, "Beyond SRD? How high is beyond?!"

Phineas didn't answer. He was staring upward, breath stopped halfway through his chest.

Kayden followed his gaze.

And saw her.

High above them, standing on the roof of a building like a shadow sculpted by moonlight — motionless, controlled, terrifyingly silent —

A woman.

Long coat.Hands behind her back.Boots planted at shoulder-width, posture steady and precise.Hair tied back in a knot that didn't move even in the night wind.

Her silhouette didn't sway.

Her presence didn't waver.

She simply watched them.

Alex's voice broke into a sharp, tiny sound."Who… who is that?"

Phineas swallowed hard.

"She's not SRD. SRD agents don't stand like that. That's military posture on another level. No wasted movement. Zero silhouette break. She's trained past anything humans should afford."

Kayden felt something cold settle beneath his ribs.

Not fear.

Recognition.

APEX shimmered —a flicker, a bow, something strangely respectful.

"Commander…Identifier match found.Ascendant Citadel — Field Observer Class."

Alex stumbled backward.

"A FIELD OBSERVER?! From the CITADEL?! That's like— that's like the top 0.0001% intelligence ghosts of the entire planet!!"

Phineas hissed, "Shh— Alex— ANY loud spike and she'll—"

She didn't move.

She didn't twitch.

Not even when Alex's voice cracked through the alley.

Instead, she simply tilted her head the slightest degree — as if acknowledging that she heard them, but choosing not to react.

Kayden felt her gaze land on him.

It wasn't aggressive.It wasn't curious.It wasn't even cold.

It was measuring him.

Like a scientist evaluating a rare anomaly.Like a tactician reading an opponent.Like someone confirming that the variable she had been sent to study…

was exactly where he needed to be.

The air tightened.

"Kayden…" Alex whispered, voice trembling. "Why is she just standing there? Why isn't she moving? Why isn't she saying anything?"

Phineas answered softly, voice hollow:

"Because she's not here to capture us.She's here to observe him."

The woman shifted slightly — a careful, deliberate pause — then lifted a single hand.

Not a wave.

Not a threat.

A direction.

Her index finger pointed down the blue-lit street the Citadel had created.

A silent command.

Proceed.

Kayden's pulse jumped.

Phineas's breath cracked."She's… guiding us?"

Alex's jaw dropped."WHAT?! Why is a world-level agent guiding US? What does she WANT?!"

The woman's head tilted again — precise, thoughtful — and for half a heartbeat, Kayden swore he saw something in her posture.

Not interest.

Not hostility.

Recognition.

APEX flickered again.

"Commander…Field Observer displays no aggression. Her gaze patterns indicate… evaluation. You are being assessed."

Alex grabbed Kayden's arm."Kayden—Kayden don't look at her like that! You're gonna ATTRACT her!"

Kayden didn't look away.

For the first time in his life, he felt like the world wasn't staring at him in fear or confusion.

It was staring at him with expectation.

And then—The woman took one step backward.

Another.

And without sound, without theatrics—

She vanished.

Not blinked.Not teleported.

She stepped into the shadow behind her…

…and simply wasn't there anymore.

Alex gasped."WHAT— SHE— SHE JUST— DID YOU SEE THAT?! She— SHE—"

Phineas was frozen.

Kayden finally exhaled.

He whispered, almost to himself:

"…she knew I was watching."

APEX pulsed, trembling with a mix of awe and something close to fear.

"Ascendant Citadel Observer has acknowledged your presence. This is the first step in… Operator Initiation."

Alex's throat closed.

"Kayden… she's not an enemy, right?"

Phineas answered before Kayden could:

"She's not an enemy.She's a warning."

Kayden closed his fist slowly.

"No," he corrected. His eyes gleamed with dangerous clarity.

"She's an invitation."

And with that, they stepped back onto the Citadel's path.

The world above them had eyes now.And they were no longer hiding.
