Chapter 15 - Devon’s Thoughts

When they returned to the classroom, she saw that the guy named Brucks, who didn't have classes with the teacher Devon and Jackson shared, was sitting in a corner of the classroom.

"That idiot, I'm going to kill him."

Devon felt curious about what that stupid bully would do, so she deliberately walked with Jackson beside him to see how far his bravery could go.

This idiot! I stayed there for thirty minutes, waiting for you! And when I come back here, that idiot completely ignored me, as if he hadn't promised me lunch! I swear I'll beat the life out of him later, damn it, blind, useless, damn it.

Brucks' thoughts couldn't be heard by anyone but himself, but his glare said more than a thousand words.

So there are still bullies here, huh… I thought this school was strict about that. The main bullies and delinquents from last year were expelled. Well, maybe not all of them were expelled. I don't know, they suddenly disappeared and I didn't care at the time. Devon reflected as she watched the unpleasant Brucks, who wouldn't take his eyes off Jackson.

"Do they sell those lollipops here?" Jackson asked, not paying attention to the guy behind him.

"Yes, I have a lot, do you want a lollipop?"

"Yes, I also have sweets, listen, do you want to go see Cobra Kai's gym?" Jackson smiled at Devon, who seemed to be starting to worry about her friend's safety.

But Jackson was calm, showing his confidence.

"Oh…" Devon didn't know how to respond, but fortunately at that moment the teacher returned and so the class continued. Like any exhausted teacher, he continued with a PowerPoint presentation.

"So, here are the rules…"

"I think it's obvious that bringing any kind of weapon to school is forbidden…"

"Girls, your skirts must be this long…"

"In times of emergency, this is the new route to get out safely. Remember it well, your lives might depend on it. By the way, you will only use this access in emergency situations, understood? Since there are no cameras in that place due to maintenance, we've found couples doing inappropriate things there and they are now expelled from the school."

Yes, couples should go extinct, that way no one would bother me in that place. Devon was excited, but her face remained emotionless, as if nothing around her mattered. She hadn't even touched the sweets she had kindly given Jackson.

"If he really wants to hurt you, don't you want to report him to a teacher? I know some trustworthy ones." Devon wasn't a bad person; she seriously believed that Jackson was good in fights, but the best fight was the one that didn't happen.

Those candies are cherry… Devon stared at those candies, so she secretly took them and kept them without looking back at Jackson, who was sleeping—or pretending to sleep.

While Devon was thinking to herself, Jackson's thoughts were drifting further and further away until he began imagining whether fighting would cause him trouble.

From what he could see, that guy was very big; even if he didn't know how to fight, his size was considerably dangerous. Though that wasn't his biggest problem—actually, this was the kind of fight Jackson liked.

Would that be considered some kind of disorder?

Devon was about to taste a candy when she noticed Brucks' intense gaze fixed on Jackson, who was asleep.

There was no need to read Brucks' thoughts to know he was furious and wanted to hit Jackson, but obviously he wouldn't do something like that, right?

"Just this once…" Jackson thought he should do something.

If that idiot apologizes and promises to buy me lunch, I'll forgive him tomorrow, Brucks muttered as he felt humiliated.

Jackson's thoughts lasted until the first half of the second study period ended, and it was time when many had free time to eat a snack.

Brucks then stood up, walked in front of Jackson and said: "Hey, idiot, I won't hit you if you go buy me something from the vending machine. I've been hungry since you didn't buy me anything."

"Of course, I'll buy you something." Jackson nodded and stood up.

"I'll keep my eyes on you!" Then, Brucks sat back down at his desk.

Devon, who had never been so interested in other people's business, seemed excited to know the outcome of this story.

Would Jackson listen to her and take a step back? She hoped he wouldn't, although it would certainly be bad if he did.

Why doesn't Jackson come back with something for that idiot? He'd save himself a lot of trouble.

Just when she was thinking that, she saw that Jackson never returned until the teacher walked into the classroom for the last study session of the day.

Devon, who had been keeping track of the story, saw how Brucks was even angrier than before when he saw Jackson drinking a soda.

"I bought you this strawberry cake, I thought you'd like it." At that moment, Jackson walked through the door and approached with lots of things in his hands.

"No…" Devon froze. He shouldn't have bought something for her, but for Brucks, who seemed to be trying to bully Jackson every chance he got, without success.
