Rain's POV:
I jerked awake, my neck stiff and throbbing from being slumped against the window for too long. When I tried to straighten up, a sharp, cold ache shot through my shoulder, making me wince.
The first thing I noticed was the silence. The steady hum of the G-Wagon was gone, and so was the heat. I looked to my left, expecting to see Danny's profile, but the driver's seat was empty.
Outside, the world was a flat, blinding sheet of white. Thick snow covered everything, stretching out until it hit the base of a massive, jagged mountain that seemed to swallow the horizon.
The sky was a heavy, melancholic blue, that deep, bruised color that settles in right before nightfall.
It was so quiet I could hear the faint ticking of the cooling engine.
"Danny?" I called out, but my voice felt thin and hollow in the empty cabin.
