Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Romance Amidst Restrictions (Revised)

Scene 1: Unseen Worry and the Silver Locket

[Location: University Cafeteria, Lunchtime.]

So Hye was eating lunch alone. Jin had been completely silent since their argument last night. He had dropped her off at college, but hadn't uttered a single word.

Just as So Hye hung up the phone after speaking briefly with Hyun Soo, Hyun Soo appeared before her.

HYUN SOO: (Smiling) Why are you sitting alone? Where is your bodyguard?

Hyun Soo placed his tray down and sat across from her. His charm gave So Hye a familiar sense of relief, a break from Jin's tense behavior.

SO HYE: (A slight smile) He's been... busy since the morning. And what are you doing here?

HYUN SOO: I came to see you. And to give you what you left behind yesterday.

Hyun Soo took a small, beautiful silver locket out of his pocket. So Hye had seen it hanging on his jacket yesterday.

HYUN SOO: It belonged to my grandmother. A small amulet. Keep it; it brings happiness. And it will make sure you never burn yourself with hot soup again.

So Hye felt moved. It was a small, personal, and warm gesture, contrasting sharply with Jin's control and coldness.

SO HYE: (Touched) Hyun Soo Sunbaenim... you are very kind. Thank you.

Scene 2: Protection or Possession?

[Location: University Parking Lot, Late Evening. The tension deepens.]

So Hye finished her class and went outside. Jin was waiting for her, but his car windows were tinted, preventing her from reading the expression on his face inside.

Just as she reached the car door, Jin suddenly stepped out of the driver's seat. His face was even harder than it had been last night.

JIN: (Looking straight into her eyes, in a stern voice) Give me your phone.

SO HYE: (Startled) What? Why?

JIN: I need to see all your messages and call logs with that man. This is a matter of security. So Hye, he is starting to track you.

Hearing this, So Hye's patience snapped. This wasn't security; it was pure jealousy and control, which he was imposing on his adopted sister, even though his feelings were clearly no longer those of just a brother.

SO HYE: (Tears in her eyes) What will you find on my phone? My happiness? My freedom? You can't control me like this! You are my bodyguard, not my owner!

JIN: (Staggered for a moment, but then hardened) I am your bodyguard, and your safety is my responsibility. This man is entering your life too quickly. It's unusual.

He held out his hand.

JIN: Phone. Now. Or else I will report your activities to Father.

The threat worked. So Hye's face turned pale. With trembling hands, she handed the phone to Jin.

Scene 3: The Song of Rebellion

[Location: So Hye's Bedroom, Night. The door is closed.]

Jin had taken her phone, leaving So Hye feeling utterly alone, angry, and powerless.

Instead of the phone, she sat down at the piano in her room. The silver locket given by Hyun Soo was tightly tied around her wrist.

She remembered that as a child, when she was scared, Jin used to hum a song from an old storybook. She often said Jin couldn't sing, but the tune always comforted her.

So Hye started playing a small, melancholic tune on the piano. The song was about betrayal and solitude. (A moment for So Hye to express the pain she cannot speak, through music.)

As she began to sing, she was unaware that Jin, who was downstairs scanning her messages, stopped by her door. He was stunned by her voice. It was the first time he had heard her sing with such pain and such beauty.

His heart broke, not only because he saw the message from Hyun Soo asking her to meet in the park the next day, but also because the pain he had inflicted upon So Hye was now manifesting in her music.
