Chapter 19 - Let the hunt begin

Se heading toward one of the entrances where yumiel got lost more than once, after a moment Jack intervened: « Ok stop, we're going to do it like the first time, listen to me, I'll guide you. » Jack guided yumiel through the cemetery, finally arriving in front of the entrance. « Well now it's your turn to play. »

Approaching the entrance of the cemetery, yumiel opened her senses, searching for the slightest trace of a passage. « Well, so do you find anything ? »

« Shut up ! How do you expect me to concentrate if you keep talking ! »

Yumiel had set Jack down a little further away, continuing her search; she eventually spotted footprints. Smelling their scent in the air, yumiel opened her senses to their maximum, soaking in their smell. Once done, she could begin tracking.

Picking Jack back up, she headed in the direction of the footprints, searching for their scent.

« Wow, you're a real hunting dog, that's handy. » Yumiel had her senses open at their maximum, and it was becoming exhausting over time, so having another source of nuisance to deal with was something she could have done without.

« For the last time, can you shut up and let me concentrate ! It's not easy. »

Jack became silent as a grave, while yumiel felt she was reaching her limit. Tracking as quickly as possible, she finally ended up in front of a chapel.

It was possible to see the inside through the finely sculpted stained glass, beautifully depicting a goddess rescuing a man. It seemed several candles had been lit, and shadows were reflecting through the light.

Yumiel was out of breath, deactivating her senses, she felt her mental strength heavily drained. Jack, for his part, could only notice yumiel's fatigue.

« I didn't know vampires could get tired, these new ones, hahaha. »

« I'm not physically tired ! But mentally. ! Anyway, there are about four to five humans in there. »

Jack climbed down from yumiel's neck, then moved on his hands to the entrance of the chapel: « We have to move quickly before the hunter arrives. »

Yumiel whispered: « I don't see why he's so afraid of this "hunter". »

To her, he seemed strong with an even more formidable instinct, yet she was sure she could win in a 1vs1.

Jack waited in front of the chapel door; yumiel joined him, then opened the door with him.

In front of them, 5 humans, including a baby hiding as best as possible. The first to come out were three men armed with rifles, lining up and aiming at yumiel and Jack.

« Great welcome, really, normally you bring out a whiskey or something. » The four humans were completely terrified when Jack spoke.

Jack turned his head and looked at yumiel as if asking for an explanation. yumiel sighed.

« Jack. You're a zombie without legs holding yourself up on your arms ! How do you expect them to take it ? »

Turning his head back toward the armed men, Jack continued speaking.

« I don't want to hurt you. I just need legs. »

After this sentence, Jack hurled himself at the man on the far right, propelling himself like a rocket, reaching his face in about a second. The other two, surprised, began shooting at yumiel, who sighed again.

Yumiel moved toward the two men, dodging the bullets easily, then breaking their weapons and killing the one on the left. Jack, meanwhile, had just torn the head off the man with ease.

Seeing this scene, yumiel shivered, thinking that all this time he could have killed her without any trouble.

The man in the middle, panicking, dropped his broken weapon and begged, not for his life but for that of the child and the woman.

« Relax, I'm not going to kill the woman or the child », Jack, meanwhile, had just torn the legs off the dead man.

« Too bad, I've never been able to taste such a young brain yet… », yumiel shot Jack a terrible look, and he corrected himself: « I'm joking of course… Sorry. »

The man's legs began fusing with Jack's body; meanwhile he was eating the brains of the two dead men. Yumiel, for her part, had torn out their hearts and was preparing to question the remaining man.

« Why did you come here ? In these cemeteries ? »

The man, like many others, took time to answer, bewildered by everything he had just witnessed. He only spoke after a short moment of absence.

« I… well I mean we came here because we were driven out of our home. »

Yumiel didn't take long to make the connection: « You were chased away by that so-called anti-monster organization ? »

« Yes exactly. They chased us away because we don't follow their ideology », Yumiel interrupted him.

« Do you know Mathis and Mr. Norman ? I was told he would have come to this cemetery, that's the reason I came here. »

The man chuckled: « If I tell you, will you spare the woman and her child ? » Yumiel nodded.

« I know Mr. Norman and his son well. When we were chased out, they claimed to be heading toward the cemetery to find shelter, so we decided to follow them. »

Yumiel was perplexed, it was very different from what the woman from the organization had said, and besides, finding refuge in a cemetery ? It all made sense when Jack called out to yumiel.

« Hey, bat ! » Yumiel turned around.

« I'm not a bat, you idiot ! My name is yumiel. »

« Well, yumiel, I must tell you he's lying. » The legs had almost finished fusing with Jack.

« How can you know ? » Jack looked at yumiel for a few seconds before turning away.

« I suppose I might as well reveal my secret. When I eat a brain, I can either see part of its memories, allowing me to retrieve information, or absorb its know-how linked to a skill, whether related to combat, handling, or whatever. »

Yumiel smiled. It was an incredible skill to retrieve information; finding someone or anything else became even easier.

« Oh of course, I forgot to mention, but the fresher the brain, the better the information or know-how is transmitted, and I can only choose one of the two. That's why I know he's lying. »

« It seems you're no longer of any use to me. »

Yumiel turned toward the man, ready to finish him. Until a disc crossed the chapel, once again missing Yumiel's face. Thus, in absolute silence, only the sound of boots could be heard in the distance.
