Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN: PARANOID IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT

I could feel it in the air again, the same sticky heaviness that had crawled into our home last week. Every shadow felt longer than it should be, every whisper of wind sounded like a warning. My hands shook even as I held Aliana's breakfast plate. She was humming softly, oblivious to the storm in my chest.

"Aliana, I don't think you should go to school today," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

Her spoon paused in mid-air. "What? Why? I"

"No questions," I interrupted. My stomach twisted into knots. I had seen too many things lately to risk her stepping outside. I couldn't explain it all. Even if I tried, Daniel wouldn't understand.

She frowned, and I knew she didn't like it. "But Mom, everyone is going. Please,I'll be late for class.

"Not today. Not until I'm sure it's safe."

I could see the hurt in her eyes, but that didn't matter. Not today. Not when I felt the shadows moving, the faint hum of something I couldn't name.

Before I could say more, the front door opened. Daniel stepped in, his brow furrowed as he carried the usual weight of a man who thought he understood everything.

"Why isn't she at school?" he asked, glancing at Aliana.

"I said she's staying home," I replied, my voice firm.

Daniel blinked. Then he let out a short laugh. "You're overreacting again. Nothing's going on, Stella. You need to calm down."

I felt heat rising in my cheeks. "Overreacting? Daniel, you have no idea what I'm dealing with. This isn't about you! You don't feel what I feel!"

He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "I see fear. I see a little girl being coddled because you're scared of shadows. That's all I see."

I took a deep breath, trying to keep my hands from trembling. "Aliana is my child. Not yours. You can't just decide she goes out when I don't think it's safe!"

Daniel's eyes narrowed. "You think I don't care? You think I don't want what's best for her?"

"You don't get it!" I shouted. "You can't! You've never felt the… the things I've seen. You can't understand!"

Aliana shrank into her chair, her spoon clattering onto the plate. I hated seeing her like that, caught in the middle, but my fear was stronger than my guilt.

"Stella," Daniel said quietly, though his voice carried a warning. "You're acting like a stranger. What is so dangerous that you can't even talk to me about it?"

I shook my head. "I can't explain it. You wouldn't believe me anyway. Just… trust me. Please."

Daniel ran a hand through his hair. "Trust you? You've locked her in the house like a prisoner. This isn't protection; it's paranoia."

The word hit me like a slap. Paranoia. Maybe he was right. Maybe I was letting my fears rule me, but I couldn't stop the sinking feeling in my chest.

I stood abruptly, my chair scraping the floor.

I whirled on him, my eyes blazing. "Daniel, I said no. Aliana isn't going anywhere. Not today, not until I say it's safe. You don't understand! You cannot understand. You don't feel it in your bones, the way I do. You can't see what's coming. You're blind to it. I'm not blind. I'm not wrong. I will not be wrong. And if that makes me paranoid in your eyes, so be it. I'd rather be paranoid than lose her!"

"You can't make every decision based on fear!" he shot back. "She's a kid! She needs to live!"

"And she will, if she's alive to live!" I yelled, my voice breaking.

Aliana had covered her ears. I wanted to take her into my arms and tell her it would be okay, but I couldn't. Not yet. Not while the danger waited outside like a moving fog, creeping closer with every breath.

Daniel ran a hand down his face. "You're impossible."

I could feel the anger and frustration boiling in me. "You think that because you don't see it, it isn't real. But I see it, Daniel. I feel it. And I won't let her go out until I'm sure she's safe. You don't get a say!"

The room grew tense, the air heavy, like the walls themselves were holding their breath. Aliana peeked from behind my leg, her little face pale and worried.

Daniel's voice softened, though it still held a sharp edge. "You're scaring her. Look what you're doing to her."

I swallowed hard, my throat tight. "I'm trying to protect her. Don't you understand? I can't… I can't lose her. Not like this."

"Lose her? Stella, she's right here! She's fine!"

"No! You don't understand! You don't know what's out there!"

For a moment, the only sound was our breathing. Then a low creak came from the hallway, like a footstep, slow and deliberate.

Both of us froze. My heart pounded so hard I thought it would burst through my ribs. I strained my ears, trying to hear over the thudding of my own pulse.

"Did you hear that?" I whispered.

Daniel tensed. "It's probably the wind."

"No. It's not the wind," I said, my voice barely above a hiss. "It's… it's moving. Just like last time."

Aliana whimpered and hid behind my legs. My stomach twisted into knots. The world outside felt alive, watching us, waiting for the right moment.

Daniel moved closer, his hand on my shoulder, but I jerked away. "Don't! Stay back!"

"I'm trying to help!" he said, his eyes searching mine.

"You don't understand! You'll only make it worse!"

The room went silent again, but the unease lingered, thick and suffocating. I held Aliana tightly, wishing I could protect her from everything, the shadows, the fog, the whispers. Wishing I could stop the fear that gnawed at me every waking second.

"Maybe I am overreacting," I admitted quietly to myself. "But I can't take the chance."

Daniel's voice softened even more. "We need a plan. We can't just hide her forever."

I shook my head. "Not yet. We wait. We watch. And if anything moves… anything at all… she stays inside. Do you understand?"

He nodded slowly, though I could see the frustration still in his eyes.

Aliana peeked out from behind me and whispered, "Mom… are we really in danger?"

I hugged her tighter. "I don't know, sweetie. But I promise I'll do everything I can to keep you safe."

The shadows shifted in the corners of the room, and a cold chill swept across my skin. Outside, the world seemed quiet, too quiet, and I knew the moving fog was waiting, creeping closer with every heartbeat.

We didn't speak for a while, each of us lost in our own thoughts. But I could feel it, the fear, the anticipation, the knowledge that today would change everything. And no matter what Daniel thought, I was ready to do whatever it took to keep Aliana safe.
