Chapter 2 - No Mana

Is he casting a vocal spell on himself? I really don't understand… Frieren thought, her gaze remaining composed. She blinked again.

"Hey, hey there, beauty… what a lovely girl! Are you cosplaying?" the man said, resting his hands cautiously on Frieren's shoulders.

"Are you dressed up for some festival?"

The man said, bringing his phone to his pocket, yet his gaze lingered on her.

The strange warmth of human closeness made her pause, a sensation she had not felt in centuries.

Her eyes scanned him carefully, observing each subtle twitch or gesture.

No spell… nothing… yet this feels odd, she thought, keeping still.

She slightly leaned back, just enough to remind him she was not to be taken lightly.

I don't even remember how to interact with humans… she thought.

The man's gaze shifted to Frieren's ears when they twitched for a second.

He tentatively touched Frieren's ears, rubbing them slightly. "What a realistic c—"

Then he screamed.

And then he let out a sudden scream and fled.

The unexpected warmth made him panic. "HEELP!!"

Frieren blinked as she watched him running. "How odd… "she whispered.

"Is there something wrong with my ears?" she asked, rubbing them as she spoke.

"More important than that… this man… is completely without mana."

I remember every human had a faint mana, no matter how long they've lived…

Frieren lowered her staff slightly but kept it ready, her eyes narrowing as she considered the implications of a human without mana.

What strange creatures humans have become… or at least that's what i think for now .. she thought, her voice calm and measured.

I wonder what Kraft and Serie might be up to now? she closed her eyes.

Perhaps they have aged… or perhaps they are long gone, she reflected silently.

Ah… I see… If They lived.. I hope they don't get disappointed.

We live for centuries… yet these humans…

"Himmel…" she whispered.

She let out a soft sigh, more from curiosity than frustration.

The distant hum of the city carried odd, unfamiliar vibrations, making her ears twitch, breaking her train of thought.
