Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Destruction of Ember City

Episode 2 part 1:"Demon King Has Emerged Once More!"

The Winchester home glowed with the warmth of Thanksgiving. Plates scraped. Glasses clinked. Laughter slipped out between bites of turkey and gravy.

Alan leaned back in his chair, tapping his fork against his plate as the TV played some silly holiday show in the background.

Alan: "China was good… Spending a few months there taught me a lot."

His voice carried a calm pride. Diana smiled, cutting into her turkey, the knife scraping lightly.

Diana: "I'm glad you had fun, son."

Ben sipped from his glass, finally relaxed for once—shoulders loosened, jaw unclenched.

Alan reached for another slice of turkey—

The TV flickered. The screen buzzed. A loud pop cracked through the speakers.

The room froze.

The cheerful holiday special vanished, replaced by a pale news anchor trembling in her seat, earpiece shaking as she touched it with an unsteady hand.

News Anchor (voice cracking):"L-Ladies and gentlemen… I—I don't know how to say this. A crisis is unfolding right now in the capital. The Statue of the Demon King… it's—it's cracking. Parts of it have already fallen."

Diana's fork slipped, clattering against the plate. Alan stiffened, breath catching. Ben's eyes narrowed instantly, his posture shifting from relaxed father to someone… older. Harder.

Diana's chin quivered. Diana: "Wh…what d-did she s-say?"

The footage cut to shaky aerial drone video.

The towering seven-foot stone statue—once a monument of victory—was splitting open. Deep fractures crawled across it like dark veins. Each crack boomed through the speakers.

Screaming civilians ran in all directions, shoving each other, tripping, faces twisted in raw panic. Cars smashed under falling debris. Window glass burst outward.

Someone in the background shrieked through the TV: "It's happening again!"

Another voice, broken: "It's over… w-we're all dead…"

The anchor pressed a finger to her earpiece, eyes wide.

News Anchor: "W-We just received reports… eyewitnesses saw a cloaked individual near the statue moments before this started. According to multiple people, a black beam was fired from their hand into the statue's base—"

Diana slammed the table. The dishes rattled violently.

Diana: "Why?! Who the hell would want that thing free— what would they gain?!"

Her hands went to her head, gripping her hair.

Ben folded his arms, jaw tightening as he glanced at her—then back to the screen, silent.

The video switched to a shaky phone recording. A lone figure stood on a rooftop far away, cloaked in smoke, a storm of black mist spiraling around their body. Even through the camera, even through the TV… the pressure felt suffocating—like the air in the room thinned.

Alan swallowed hard. Alan (barely able to breathe): "D…Dad. Do you… do you know who that is?"

Before Ben could answer, the camera lurched. A deafening crack split through the TV speakers as the statue's upper half lurched forward, pieces raining down.

News Anchor: "Authorities are on their way but—god—Tempestia and Noonlight, the only heroes who ever defeated the Demon King, haven't been seen in five years! They… they might be dead!"

Ben's hand flew to his forehead— A sharp grunt escaped him.

Like something stabbed inside his skull.

It lasted only a second—then he forced himself still.

Diana's fingers curled tightly, knuckles white.

Diana: "No… please no… it's gonna break free any second…"

Alan heard it clearly now—his mother's fear. Real fear.

She reached for Ben's arm, voice cracking: "Ben—is your head okay?"

Ben's eyes darted around the room like he was trying to gather pieces of something he couldn't remember.

Ben: "I… I don't know…not sure what was that."

On the TV—More stones collapsed. Civilians screamed. Alarms wailed.

News Anchor: "If any S or A-Rankers are hearing this—please—please go to the scene. The city is in grave danger!"

Another camera angle caught the destruction from ground level. A crowd chanted desperately:

Random civilian: "Black Mantis! Please—if you're out there, help us! Please!"

The name hit the room like a dropped weight.

Then the feed zoomed toward the rooftop figure. They lifted a hand—energy crackling around their fingers.

A blast fired.

People dropped instantly—lifeless bodies sprawled across the street.

And then that deep, warped voice hit the speakers:

Oblivion: "Behold, mortals… I am Oblivion. The show has begun."

He dragged his hand from his head down his torso— And vanished, like reality folded around him.

The ground in the footage shook violently as the statue's upper half finally gave way, crashing down with a monstrous impact.

The house trembled. A glass on the table tipped and rolled.

Diana staggered back from the table, breathing fast.

Alan: "What the hell is happening out there? Th—the whole city's shaking!"

She slammed her hand down again—harder—dishes jumping on the table.

Diana: "Ben, we need to do something! Otherwise the city—hell, the whole world—is screwed!"

Ben stood still, shadowed by the TV's flickering light. His voice came low, rough, like it scraped its way out of his throat.

Ben: "Whoever this Oblivion guy is… they're strong. Strong enough to free Megalodon. That means… they're top five. Easy."

Diana stared at him.

Diana: "R-Really? But… who? Who the hell has that kind of power?! Are you saying he's… one of the S-Rankers? A traitor?"

Her breath trembled as she gripped the table edge like it was the only solid thing left.

Alan whispered the name again, hands shaking slightly:

Alan: "Oblivion… the new villain that's been showing up lately…"

The weight of the name sat heavy in the room—cold, thick, choking. Like history itself was warning them.

Diana pushed her chair back so fast it scraped across the floor. She stepped toward Ben, voice shaking but sharp.

Diana: "We… we have no damn choice. We go together and we fight this thing."

She dropped to her knees, arms wrapping around Alan, pulling him close. Her fingers dug into the back of his shirt like she was scared to let go.

Diana (voice cracking): "I'm sorry, Al… I'm so sorry. All the other S-Rankers aren't here to help your father, so I have to do it.'

Alan froze, breath catching.

Alan: "Mom… you can't—if you use your powers like that, it'll tear you apart. If Megalodon's back, you can't just—"

She cut him off with a glare sharp enough to stop him mid-sentence.

Diana: "Alan… if we don't stop him, there won't be a tomorrow. It's me… or the world."

Alan's stomach twisted. He felt the words hit like a punch.

Ben leaned forward, elbows on his knees, eyes locked on the flickering TV.

Ben: "This isn't some asshole trying to get famous. He's following someone's orders."

Static.

The statue on-screen finally collapsed—massive stone slabs crashing into the streets— But the pedestal was empty.

Alan's breath hitched. Ben's head tilted slightly, eyes darkening.

Alan saw it instantly. Something was wrong in Ben's expression.

Ben (low, stiff): "That's enough. Diana… you're not coming with me. I'm not letting you."

Diana turned her head toward him, lips parted, eyes drowning in helplessness. Her chest rose and fell in uneven breaths.

Ben didn't budge. His stance didn't shake. He stood like a man who had already made peace with whatever came next.

Ben: "I have to go. I need to be the hope for these people."

He stepped closer to her, voice steady, steady in a way that scared Alan.

Ben: "Tell me the incantations I need… to end it once and for all."

Silence. Heavy. Suffocating.

Diana's jaw trembled.

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

Diana (broken whisper): "You… knew? But I never… I… showed…"

Ben: "Now isn't the time. Just tell me."

Her hands shook violently. She closed her eyes, inhaled, then recited—each word cutting through the room like a blade.

Diana (voice trembling):

"O lux divina caelestis, descende super daemonem tenebrarum!

Inimice omnis sancti, te in oblivionem deleo!

Per aeternam Dei vim, existentiam tuam in aeternum erado!

Forma tua in nihilum dissolvat, numquam reditura!"

The lights in the room flickered. A cold pressure rolled across their skin, like something old had woken up.

Diana's breathing stuttered, her palms pressed against her thighs to stop them from shaking.

Ben didn't flinch. He absorbed every word, every tone, like carving it into his bones.

Before he could speak, his communicator buzzed. Richard's voice sliced through the static.

Richard: "HeroCorp is calling every hero we have. All S-ranks are still off-world. Mars mission. Only A and B-ranks are left."

Ben's jaw flexed hard.

Ben: "That won't be enough."

Another call beeped in. Diana snatched her own device, pacing, fingers rubbing her forehead:" How many heroes can you spare?'

Woman (strained): "I'm sorry, miss… we can't send anyone else. Most heroes are already out dealing with global disasters. Evacuations are underway, but Megalodon—"

Static. "—too dangerous. We don't have the numbers."

Diana's free hand tightened until her knuckles went pale:" All of you are useless.'

Ben: "Richard. Who do we have?"

A long pause. Longer than it should've been.

Richard: "…Not many. Some heroes aren't answering—too scared. But there are 13 probably 20 heroes who are willing to fight. They won't last long, but… they'll try. You're the only one who stands a real chance, Mentis. Good luck."

The line went dead.

Ben exhaled, slow and heavy.

Ben: "They'll send what they can."

Diana's eyes flickered, her throat tightening. She understood exactly what that meant.

Their gazes locked. Everything else in the room vanished.

She had seen Megalodon before. She had watched heroes fall. Her breath trembled as she reached up, cupping Ben's face with cold fingers.

Diana (voice cracking): "Why… why is this happening to us? Now of all times… w-we don't have enough heroes… and Megalodon—"

Her voice broke. Her hand shook against his cheek.

Diana: "I can't lose you. That spell… it takes years off your life. P-please don't use it. P-please…"

Ben closed his eyes and leaned into her touch for a heartbeat. Then he pulled her into a kiss—deep, desperate—one she returned like she was afraid it would be the last.

Ben: "…I'll do whatever it takes, Diana. Don't be sad… love."

Her breath hitched. Her lips quivered. And then she dropped—knees hitting the floor.

Diana: "Ben—no… no, please—"(crying)

Alan slid beside her instantly, arms wrapping around her trembling shoulders.

Alan: "Have faith in Father… h-he's the strongest. He won't lose that easily."

Ben looked at them both… and something inside him twisted. He swallowed hard. Turned away fast.

His armor materialized around him, plate by plate—dark blue and silver reflecting the dim lighting as if rejecting the fear in the room.

Black Mentis: "This… may be goodbye. Diana… take care of the kids."

And then— He vanished in a sharp burst of displaced air.

Alan lowered his head, whispering:

Alan: "Good luck… Father."

Diana wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

Diana (weak whisper): "I… I need to break this curse. I'm close… I don't have much time left…"

Far away— A blinding white flash tore open the night sky as Black Mentis teleported into the heart of war.

His boots hit shattered pavement.

Burning buildings twisted around him. Crimson lightning cracked overhead.

Ember City… was dying.

Screams tore through the ruined streets. Civilians stumbled over broken concrete, some dragging others, some crying for help that didn't come fast enough. Fires snapped in the wind, shadows crawling across the wreckage like they were alive. A few heroes sprinted past, grabbing people by the arms, hauling them away from collapsing buildings.

A deep vibration rolled through the ground.

At the shattered base of the Demon King's statue, the air twisted— A black spiral ripped itself open, swirling like a living wound.

Megalodon stepped through, obsidian armor scraping, smoke rolling off his body. Six eyes swept across the city like he was scanning prey.

Megalodon: "Hmph… this should keep everyone busy while I take care of my objective."

His voice hit the battlefield like a boulder dropping.

He lifted one hand. Two more portals snapped open behind him.

Demons flooded out—lurching, sprinting, clawing over each other. Some cracked like burning skeletons, others bulged with metal plates fused to muscle, weapons dripping with something dark. They didn't march. They swarmed.

Megalodon flicked his fingers forward, a gesture sharp as a blade.

Megalodon: "Follow the plan, minions… or our deal is neutralized."

Heroes slammed into them a second later—shouting, charging, unleashing powers. The war erupted at full volume.

Black Mentis was already inside the chaos. His silhouette blurred between monsters—each punch sending bodies slamming into twisted cars, streetlights, walls. One heavy blow hit a giant demon and the shockwave tossed smaller ones through windows.

The thirteen A-rank heroes formed around him, young and hyped-up but holding the line.

Mentis lifted two fingers to his comm.

Black Mentis: "Stick to your training! Do not fight them head-on—leave that to me. Break their groups so they don't spill into the nearby cities!"

Affirmations crackled back at him. The formation shifted.

Frostbite exhaled—cold mist blooming around her face. She snapped her hands down; ice ripped through the pavement, spearing a wave of demons climbing over a crushed bus. Frozen shards rained around her boots.

Frostbite: "Booyaa! Babeh—what a strike!"

She slid sideways, forming another barricade.

Frostbite: "C'mon, Inferno! Cover! Let's melt and freeze these bastards!"

Inferno bounded up over her in the air, flames swirling off his shoulders.

Inferno: "You got it, sweet cheeks!"

He slapped a demon on the head mid-jump — a literal fire-palm smack — and the creature exploded into flame. Inferno laughed

:"Gotttchaaaaa."(hehehehe)

He slammed forward like a comet, molten heat exploding off his fists. Demons on the flank ignited, their bodies popping under the heat.

Inferno (laughing): "Looks like I got more than you— I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying!"

Thunderstrike stomped up behind them, warhammer crackling.

Thunderstrike: "Yea, asshole, leave some for us! Are you expecting me to let you outshine me? Hell nah dawg!"

He swung the hammer into the ground— The street cracked open, demons lifting off the pavement like toys.

Thunderstrike smacked his forehead with two fingers.: "Now THAT'S a home run! They flew straight to the damn moon! Somebody keep score—I'm winning this shit! So drinks on all over you mahn."

Black Mentis used the opening—one kick, two, five—demons launched in every direction as he tore a straight path toward Megalodon.

Black Mentis: "Gravity—crush down the ones blocking my route."

Gravity froze for half a second, then lifted her arms. Her breath shook. The air warped. The entire battlefield dipped, like gravity twisted sideways.

Demons staggered, crushed under pressure. A heartbeat later, the force flipped—

She yanked her hand up, then she dragged it down fast.

Demons shot into the earth atmosphere— then crashed down hard, bodies bursting on impact and cuts flying slamming into the ruined street.

Gravity (teeth clenched): "G-Got it! I can't hold this long!"

Mentis: "Use your surroundings. Your stamina's the lowest—fight smart."

Gravity: "R-Right!"

Spectra descended with a sweep of light, her boots touching the ground softly. She extended her hands; a gentle pulse steadied Gravity's wobbling limbs, reinforcing her control.

Spectra (whispering): "Hey, steady your breathing. You got this."

Nightstalkers slithered out of the smoke next—long limbs, bone masks, silent movements.

Photon stepped in front, shield flaring.

Photon: "They're adapting! Shit— they're learning our strategy!"

A claw slammed his shield, sparks bursting from the impact.

Photon cut down a demon in half:' They ain't stupid y'all so be careful.'

Black Mentis swept his arm sideways—several violet blasts cut through incoming demons. His eyes locked on Megalodon.

Black Mentis (under his breath): "I'll get to you soon… you bastard."

Blink vanished mid-run.

Violet static flickered across the battlefield as she teleported through demon ranks—touching shoulders, skulls, knees—each target vanishing skyward, reappearing miles above the city where gravity finished the job.

Blink: "Save your energy, boss! We got the small fry—go for their leader.!"

She reappeared near a towering commander demon—its armor thicker, blade humming. Blink grinned, took her daggers out.

Blink: "Eyes on their commander! Anyone wanna lend a hand?"

She didn't wait.

One quick slice—clean through the spine. The commander dropped, armor clattering on the ground.

Demons around him faltered instantly.

Blink: "Sike— now the back of your head is ridiculous! Haaa!"

The demon fell on his face, ass up!

She nudged the corpse with her boot.

Blink: "Didn't need backup after all. "(Giggle)

:"But ugh…I'll give this dude a 2/10 and just because he fell like a damn ostrich."

She shot the team a thumbs-up— Then blinked out of sight.

A violent shockwave blasted across the battlefield as Leviathan's (powering up) aura exploded outward. Cars flipped. Loose debris spiraled. Heroes braced themselves.

Inferno threw both arms up, flames sputtering under the pressure.

Inferno: "OH—SHIT—!!"

He slid back several meters, boots carving lines in the dirt.

Inferno: "Fuck! Do we really gotta deal with THIS thing!?"

Frostbite ducked behind a half-melted pillar, hair whipping in the wind.

Frostbite: "Yeah, no kidding—Mentis is facing that thing alone. Move your ass! We clear a path for em!"

A bone-deep roar ripped the sky in half.

Megalodon rose above the battlefield, his eyes glowing like burning suns. Smoke curled off his armor in long streams. His gaze snapped straight to Black Mentis.

Megalodon: "Enough games… Come face me Mentis."

His voice shook loose bricks from ruined buildings.

Megalodon (looking down On the heroes): "You think you can stand a chance against me, mortals?"

He vanished in a blink—reappeared with a punch aimed straight for Black Mentis' skull.

Black Mentis inhaled sharply.

Black Mentis: "G—! Fuck—he's fast!"

He twisted sideways at the last instant. The punch grazed his cheek, ripping a line off his mask.

Mentis dropped under the follow-up strike, fist charging with violet energy. He slammed it straight into Megalodon's chest.

A detonation tore the battlefield apart—cars spun, windows vaporized, debris rained like shrapnel.

Thunderstrike swung his hammer upward, smashing a flying SUV out of the air.

Thunderstrike: "GOD—DAYMN! Shit's gettin' serious out here, people!"

Megalodon stumbled, armor denting inward. His eyes pulsed.

Megalodon (low growl): "That's…Strange this…isn't the one I'm looking for…"

Black Mentis' teeth clenched.

Black Mentis: "You weren't expecting that, big guy?"

The ground cracked under their feet. Everyone around them felt something shift—something wrong. Heroes paused mid-fight, uneasy without knowing why.

Then—both vanished.

Two streaks—one violet-blue, one crimson—clashed in midair.

Their fists collided with a thunderclap that rippled through the clouds, a shockwave rolling across the ruined city.

Megalodon: "Are you here to buy your master time, puppet?"

Black Mentis' eyebrow jerked upward.

Black Mentis: "What the hell are you babbling abo—"

He dodged left— Megalodon's elbow slammed into him, sending him skidding back through a crushed bus.

Megalodon: "Shut your ass up! Pathetic worm."

Black Mentis burst free with a blur, knee raised— Megalodon mirrored him instantly. Their knees collided, sending another circular air blast ripping through the streets.

Civilians screamed nearby, trapped in overturned cars or hiding behind rubble.

Rock piles collapsed. Flames erupted. No safe corner existed.

Electro, Mr. Torch, and Rock-man sprinted into the fray as a demon horde charged them.

Electro flung his arms out, lightning zig-zagging violently.

Electro: "MOVE, GET OUT OF MY DAMN WAY—!!"

Bolts tore through demons, bodies splitting open mid-run.

Mr. Torch vaulted forward, purple flames erupting from his hands.

Mr. Torch: "BURN, YOU FREAKS—!!"

His fire swallowed a group whole—skin melting, bones blackening.

Rock-man pounded his fists together, stone grinding loudly.

Rock-man: "Alright… my turn. These weird-ass freaks picked the WRONG day to mess with Earth!"

He smashed the ground. Jagged boulders shot upward like missiles, crushing demons and snapping limbs clean off.

A massive demon—muscles bulging, jaw split in three—caught a falling boulder and hurled it back.

The heroes barely dodged.

Rock-man spun, eyes widening.

Rock-man: "ELECTRO—BEHIND—!"

Electro turned too late.

The demon's massive claws clamped around his head— A sickening CRACK echoed as the skull flattened.

Blood sprayed across the rubble—thick, sticky—brain matter sliding down the demon's palm.

Electro's headless corpse hit the ground.

Mr. Torch: "FUCK—!!"

He didn't finish. The demon punched him so hard he flew through a collapsed building—crashing through three walls before going limp.

Blood smeared the rubble in a long streak.

Rock-man charged, eyes wild, earth swirling around his fists like a drill.

Rock-man:"DIE—YOU—NOTHER—FUCKER—!!"

He fired rotating stone bullets straight into the demon's chest— Flesh shredded, ribs splintered— The demon dropped with a thud.

Rock-man fell to his knees, panting, hands trembling over his dead teammates.

Rock-man (broken whisper): "Rest… in peace… you crazy bastards… I avenged you…"

On the other side—Mender knelt over a gravely injured hero, hands glowing faintly. Blood soaked his sleeves.

Mender: "H-Hold still—fuck—come on—come ON—! Stay with me!"

His hands shook from exhaustion.

A civilian's scream cut through the noise—

A boy pinned under a beam.

Rock-man sprinted toward them, still shaking from rage.

Rock-man: "Mender! We need you up front!"

Mender: "Buy me some goddam time then! I'm busy dude!"

Photon slammed a demon with his shield, blade cutting through thick bone.

Photon: "We NEED a route out—civilians are getting slaughtered out here!"

Photon smacked a demon with his shield, then turned around and slashed it with his blade cutting it in half.

Gravity staggered forward, blood streaming down her forehead. She threw her arms wide—gravity warped.

Demons collapsed, bodies flattening against the ground.

Gravity: "E-Echo—Spectra—get civilians OUT—NOW!"

Echo split into five glowing clones— They blinked in and out of danger, grabbing survivors, teleporting them to safety.

Spectra swooped overhead, hand to her temple.

Her eyes ignited with lasers.

A sweeping line of beams severed demons clean in half—torsos sliding off spines, arms flying, organs splattering across the road.

Spectra: "Path's CLEAR! MOVE!"
