Chapter 2 - Chapter One: I Am the Back-Up

On my way home, my phone was ringing. I carefully picked it up, being sure not to accidentally turn it into a block of melted plastic. Frostbite was the one calling.

"Blazing Rider, you're near Vineyard Town, right?" her crisp voice came through.

"Affirmative," I replied. "Just wrapping up."

"Good. I'm fighting a twenty-meter Kaiju right now at Silver Harbour City, just north of you. I need backup."

Vineyard Town. As the name suggests, everyone knows our specialty.

I immediately summoned my magical superbike, which I affectionately named Salamander. With me on board, Salamander and I shot into the air, riding on what looked like an invisible road fifty meters above the ground.

At a top speed fast enough to break the sound barrier, I arrived mere seconds later. Thankfully, I was airborne; otherwise, the shockwaves from breaking the sound barrier could have been devastating. I learned that lesson the hard way last week—thankfully, my insurance covered the blunder.

The first thing I heard was a loud, guttural roar. The twenty-meter Kaiju was now visible. It looked like a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but instead of scales, its body was covered by multi-colored, rainbow feathers, and it had similar-colored wings. The wings were too small for proper flight, but the Kaiju flapped them frantically as it ran. Ten percent of the city's buildings were already flattened in its wake.

Without hesitation, I aimed my superbike at its left wing. The impact severed it at the base. The Kaiju let out a painful shriek and looked up at me.

I created jets of fire from my hands and feet, similar to a rocket, to keep myself floating. Then, like a missile, I flew down, hitting its chest and setting the Kaiju's feathers ablaze. I immediately jumped back, creating distance between us.

It was injured, but far from dead.

Frostbite landed beside me. She was an Ice-themed Magical Girl, a direct contrast to my Fire theme. Her expression was grim.

"Three Magical Girls are confirmed dead, and at least seven were sent to the hospital," she reported, keeping her gaze locked on the burning monster. She didn't elaborate on their real identities, so for all I knew, it was a mix of different genders and ages.

"Look, Rider," she continued, "I know you're one of the few Magical Girls with enough concentrated firepower to actually injure this thing. Let's hit it together. We need to kill it faster before the city is fully flattened."

I raised a flaming thumb up in response.

She landed a powerful ice blast on the Kaiju's leg, freezing the area solid. The monster staggered. I immediately summoned Salamander to hit the exact spot she had frozen. The impact caused the ice to instantly vaporize, injuring the Kaiju even more. The vaporized steam wasn't normal, either; it was hot enough to rival the surface of the sun.

One combined attack wouldn't kill it, but after a dozen alternating attacks—her freezing blasts mixed with my flaming kicks and superbike strikes—the Kaiju was finally sufficiently injured. The fight was torturous for the creature, yet even with our combined power, we couldn't fell it in a single strike.

But one thing was for sure: we Magical Girls are getting stronger the more we use our power. For example, I'm now almost three times stronger than when I first became a Magical Girl.

The Kaiju now lay dead, covered in burn marks. Its rainbow feathers were gone, having been reduced to cinder because of my fire.

Frostbite walked up to me, her aura still faintly glowing. "Thanks, Blazing Rider. Don't worry about the destruction. We're fully insured, and the government pays a massive amount to cover it."

She sighed. "I guess that's one of the few good uses of taxpayer money."

"Plus," she added, "there are Magical Girls with the power to return the city back to its original state."

I nodded. Girls with reconstruction powers were never sent to fight monsters and were heavily protected by the government. I didn't even know how many existed, only that they did. They must get a huge paycheck rebuilding this mess.

Exhausted from the fight, I chose to power down. I found a police patrol car, gratefully climbed into the back seat, and was fast asleep before the officer even started driving me home.
