Chapter 1 - Hunger

"Are you sure he's in here." Positive. Unit 7 confirmed capture. We should have the right information"

"Subject appears to be conscious. Lets see if it can respond." "Subject is unresponsive"

"No physical or verbal response." "Could be in shock." "Or could be uncooperative"

"A stimulus test is in order." "What did you have in mind?" "Slight electric shock should be enough."

"Sounds reasonable. But lets start with low voltage and see how it reacts.

"Ready?"

"Ready."

"...no response." "Lets try a stronger stimulus."

"Subject exhibits complete lack of electrical stimuli. Possible anomaly-related properties?"

"No response this very bizarre." "Subject seems completely immune to electrical stimuli. Further tests required to determine the extent of the immunity."

"...interesting. The monitoring system just flagged an abnormal energy signature emitting from the subject."

"The reading suggest some type of...absorption. Whatever we just zapped it with, it might not be ignoring it but instead consuming it."

"Food maybe?." "That could be possible." "...So it was reacting. Just not in a way we could see."

"That's interesting-"

"Hungry"

"....Did it just speak?" "Uh. control, this is researcher Lang. We have...an update. Subject appears capable of speech and is request...nutrition?"

"Understood. Preparing standard nutrient paste for delivery."

"..We'll have food brought shortly. In meantime...ahem... would you care to elaborate on... the nature of your hunger?" She sounds deeply unsettled.

There's an uncomfortable silence as both scientists stand before..you, trying to process the situation. The woman's eyes dart around nervously, the man's hand hovering near the device in case he needs to use it again.

After a moment, the woman finally speaks up, her voice wavery slightly:

"...What exactly...did you say you were...hungry for?"

Another tense silence descends. The woman and man shift uncomfortably, exchanging another look. The man adjusts his grip on the device while the woman grips her tablet so tight her knuckles are white. Then, she swallows nervously and ventures another question:

"..I-is it... human food... that you require?"

The air grows even tenser as the woman's question hangs unanswered. The man shifts uneasily, the device in his hand creaking from the force if his grip.

There's another brief lull, broken by only by the silent hum of the overhead lights. Fianlly, the woman manages to find her voice again, though it's barely a whisper;

"Y-you are...human right?"

The silence stretches unbearably long. The scientists' breathing grows shallow. The man's fingers twitch towards a hidden panic button on his belt.

Then without warning the overhead lights being flickering violently. A deep staticky voice echoes through the intercom:

"CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL ALPHA-9 INITIATED. ALL PERSONNEL EVACUATE TEST CHAMBER IMMEDIATELY."

The woman drops her tablet with a clatter as both scientists bolt for the door, screaming:

"ITS NOT HUMAN. ITS NOT HUMAN-"

The door slams shut behind them. The lights die. You're left alone in perfect darkness... until a faint, hungry growl rumbles from your throat.
