The council room at Westbridge was quieter than expected.
Not empty.
Just controlled.
Five chairs around a long polished table. Floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the courtyard where students moved like small clusters of noise below.
Inside the room—
Silence.
The faculty advisor arranged a few documents before speaking.
"As council members, your responsibility is to maintain structure while improving the student system."
No one interrupted.
But the tension at the table wasn't subtle.
Anaya sat with her notebook open.
Not writing.
Just observing.
Across from her, Kiara rested her hands neatly on the table.
Perfect posture.
Perfect calm.
Beside Anaya, he leaned back slightly in his chair.
Watching the room the same way she was.
Calculating.
The other two council members looked slightly uncomfortable.
Because three of the five people at the table were already known rivals.
The advisor cleared his throat.
"The first responsibility of the council is to assign committee oversight."
He slid five folders forward.
"Each of you will manage a division."
Anaya opened hers.
Policy and Reform Committee.
Interesting.
Across from her, Kiara glanced at her own folder.
Her smile deepened almost invisibly.
Student Affairs and Funding.
Control of resources.
Of course.
Beside her, he flipped open his folder calmly.
Academic Strategy Board.
Aarav, who had quietly slipped into the back of the room as an observer, whispered under his breath—
"Of course they gave the three most dangerous positions to the three most dangerous people."
Anaya ignored him.
The advisor continued.
"You'll also collaborate on major proposals."
That word landed differently.
Collaborate.
Kiara looked up first.
"I'm sure collaboration will be… productive."
Her tone was pleasant.
But it carried something sharper.
Anaya closed her folder slowly.
"Depends on priorities."
"Everyone's priority should be stability," Kiara replied.
"Or improvement," Anaya said.
A quiet pause.
Then he spoke.
"Improvement requires disruption sometimes."
The advisor looked tired already.
"We're not here to debate philosophy again."
No one apologized.
Across the table, Kiara studied both of them carefully.
"You two seem to agree on many things," she said lightly.
Anaya met her gaze.
"We agree on efficiency."
"Interesting word."
Kiara leaned slightly forward.
"Efficiency can also look like consolidation of influence."
There it was.
The first open move.
The other council members shifted uncomfortably.
But Anaya didn't react.
"Influence only matters if it's effective," she replied calmly.
Kiara's smile remained.
"But influence also attracts attention."
"Attention doesn't bother me."
"I noticed."
A brief silence followed.
Then the advisor clapped his hands lightly.
"Excellent enthusiasm. Let's move forward."
But the room had already shifted.
Because now everyone understood something clearly.
This council wasn't going to operate quietly.
It was going to operate strategically.
And the balance of power?
Still undecided.
As the meeting ended, students outside the glass windows looked up.
Watching the new council leave the room.
Anaya walked out first.
He followed beside her.
Kiara walked just behind.
Three leaders.
One corridor.
And already—
Westbridge could feel the shift.
