I assisted Silas in arranging the goods.
There were a lot of them, too many for just two people. Crates stacked against the walls, boxes lined up on the floor, each labeled carefully with dates and inventory numbers. This was a lot of work for two person.
Which was exactly why it didn't make sense that Robert hadn't shown up.
Robert was never absent. Never late. He took pride in his work as a chef the same way Silas took pride in control. And most of all—Silas didn't look even the least bit annoyed that Nicholas hadn't come.
That alone sent a chill crawling down my spine.
The Silas I knew would have lost his mind over someone not showing up for work. He would've cursed, complained, thrown something, or at the very least made a snide remark. But this morning, he was calm.
Which meant something wasn't adding up.
Nothing was making sense.
