Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: Slaughter

"Hmm?!"

With a casual swipe, Kirito caught the handful of shuriken flying toward him mid-air. In the same motion, he hurled them back, faster and stronger than before. His counterattack was merciless, the blades piercing into vital points of the attacker's body. The enemy dropped dead instantly.

Kirito had eliminated a Sand ninja in a single move, immediately drawing the attention of nearby Sand and Sound infiltrators. They rushed toward him in waves.

"Hmph!"

One opponent swung down a sword at Kirito's head. Kirito easily dodged, stepped in close, and drove his elbow hard into the enemy's chest, right at a chakra-gate pressure point. The enemy's eyes rolled back white, body collapsing like a puppet with its strings cut.

From the side, a kunai came stabbing toward his ribs. Kirito slapped it away with his left palm, then hooked his fingers like claws and crushed the attacker's throat with a ruthless twist. Without stop, he spun on his heel and delivered a sweeping kick that slammed the final ambusher into a stone pillar.

Three enemies down in the blink of an eye.

Swift, brutal, and decisive, Kirito's actions sent a wave of fear through the remaining would-be attackers.

But the stronger the deterrent, the more powerful the enemies it would attract.

From a distance, a Sand jonin narrowed his eyes. Realizing the threat, he redirected his target and began approaching Kirito. He reached into his pouch and pulled out a kunai. With a single-hand seal, chakra surged visibly around the blade's tip, forming sharp, green-tinged wind chakra.

A weapon shaped by elemental chakra manipulation.

Clearly, a real jonin.

"That kid... Leave him to me."

"…" Kirito's eyes narrowed as he met the jonin's gaze. A murmur left his lips.

"Looks like I'll need to bring out a bit more power if I want them to back off."

He had no intention of joining this war. His mission was simple: protect Asuna amidst the chaos. Nothing more.

That meant he wouldn't go out of his way to engage enemies, but to keep them away, he had to terrify them. The only path forward was to wield a level of power that crushed their will to fight.

"In that case… I'll use this."

Kirito exhaled slowly. Frosted breath misted in the air.

A sudden cold spread from his body. Frost crept over the ground beneath his feet.

"Dance... Sode no Shirayuki."

His right hand lifted, and with a shimmer of white light, a long, elegant blade appeared. Its hilt, guard, and blade were pure white, as if forged from snow and moonlight.

"Pfft. Fancy weapon. But-!"

The seasoned Sand jonin was unmoved. He surged forward, becoming a blur of movement, kunai in hand. The wind-infused blade stabbed toward Kirito with lethal intent.

Kirito raised Sode no Shirayuki and brought it down to meet the strike head-on.

CLANG !

Blade and kunai clashed.

Normally, a kunai would be cleaved in two by Sode no Shirayuki's edge. But this one, strengthened by elemental chakra, held firm, as hard as forged steel. Kirito's strike felt like it had slammed into a reinforced metal wall.

Kirito was surprised the kunai hadn't snapped.

The jonin was equally stunned.

What?! My weapon is infused with wind chakra! That blade should've been severed instantly!

But the standstill didn't last.

Kirito gripped the hilt tighter, and chakra surged into the blade.

"Wha-?!"

The jonin's pupils contracted. Ice formed instantly where the two weapons met. His kunai, and the wind chakra around it, froze solid.

Startled, he released the weapon. It fell to the ground in a brittle heap of frosted shards.

"…That sword," the jonin muttered, staring at the blade in Kirito's hand, which was now emitting waves of cold energy.

He tried to speak further, but Kirito gave him no time.

Kirito vanished.

The blade flashed horizontally in a swift arc.

The jonin dodged with impeccable reflexes, battle-hardened instincts saving him in the nick of time.

"A speed-type… ninja?" Kirito could feel it. The opponent was fast, quick enough to drag the fight out if left unchecked.

But right now, Kirito wasn't looking for a drawn-out exchange.

What he needed was absolute suppression. Crushing force. Psychological domination.

"Then let's end this."

Kirito reversed his grip on the sword. The blade's tip brushed across his fingertip, drawing a shallow cut. A droplet of blood fell, and instantly froze.

"Negative fifty degrees."

Frost spread rapidly across his lashes, brows, and hair. The temperature plummeted.

Without warning, the ground shook.

The jonin stumbled.

What's happening?! The earth is shaking?!

He instinctively tried to use chakra to anchor his feet, but the ground was covered in ice, and even worse, the frozen layer blocked chakra infusion. He couldn't stick to it at all.

"Damn it !"

Kirito took the opening. His body blinked forward, appearing directly in front of the jonin.

He brought the sword down in a heavy arc.

"Shit !"

The jonin reflexively tried to retreat, but the unstable, shaking ground made it almost impossible to move. Gritting his teeth, he slapped the ground hard and used brute strength to launch himself into the air.

"If I'm airborne, the tremors can't reach me!"

Kirito didn't deny it.

"Yes. The ice shock doesn't affect airborne targets. However…"

He plunged Sode no Shirayuki into the ground.

A circular white glyph spread out from the impact point, radiating outwards with Kirito at its center.

The airborne jonin looked down and immediately felt a sinking sense of dread.

That circle!

"The sky isn't as safe as you think."

Kirito's eyes glinted.

He leapt out of the circle's range just as it erupted into a blinding white beam.

"First Dance: Tsukishiro." [Some no mai: Tsukishiro]

A pillar of white light pierced the sky.

Everything it touched, air included, was frozen solid.
