Chapter 25: Ferrari
It was already mid-August
I was looking at my bank account with the one million dollars I had received from my mother's life insurance today (the payment took longer than expected), and on the other screen, I saw what my Gauss LLC had: 124 million dollars, already showing a 21.5% gross return on my investments (not considering taxes).
It's really insane what future knowledge can do in terms of money, and this is just the beginning - only a few of the calls have actually moved so far
"I'm living kinda very frugally," I murmured. "I think it's time to buy a car for myself."
I liked to take cabs, but now that I was back in the market (my two-week rule had already passed), I would need a car to take the girls for a ride.
On a side note, Brenda and I didn't speak at all. We thought it would be better for each of us to go our separate ways to make moving on easier.
-----------------------------
I walked into one of the luxury dealerships in Los Angeles.
I started looking at the cars in the showroom. There were some more affordable ones, but I was drawn to the supercars (I had owned a few in my past life, back when I could still drive before my illness worsened): Lamborghini Murciélago, Porsche 911 Turbo, but the one that really caught my attention was the Ferrari
"Looking for something, handsome?" a woman asked me.
"A car… and a beautiful girl. Seems I get both." I looked at the gorgeous blonde who was attending me. "Jake," I introduced, raising my hand.
"Alex," she replied with a smile shaking my hand
"Would it be better to see a Mustang or a Pontiac Firebird?" she asked.
Both were kind of bad boy cars, I thought. "Isn't it bad to undermine your possible client?"
"You don't look like the type who buys these kinds of cars."
"And you don't look like the type who works in a place like this, you don't seem like the kind of person who knows how to negotiate" I pointed out, not offended by her words.
She hadn't used a mocking tone, just bluntly said what she believed was a fact.
"Oh, don't remind me. I wouldn't have accepted if I hadn't needed the money. But I just got a new job at The Bait Shop, a club in Pacific Palisades," she told me.
"Huh," I raised one eyebrow.
"This is my last week here, but I can still get the simpler cars for a test drive. Why don't I do that and we have some fun?" she proposed suggestively.
"Not a bad offer." I took her hand and smirked. "But how about I buy this car, give you a nice bonus, and you can say fuck off to all these people right now - and I'll give you a ride?"
-----------------------------
"That was so good. Get a big bonus and then flip the bird to them," Alex laughed, sitting in the passenger seat while I drove
"Can I smoke in here?" she asked, already pulling a pack of cigarettes.
"In my new Ferrari 575M?" I said, a bit incredulous.
"What if I give you a BJ instead?"
I looked at her slowly. "Girl, I changed my mind - you really know how to negotiate."
"But this is a brand-new car!" I retorted.
-----------------------------
Parking at the front of the house, Jay was standing outside.
I stepped out of the Ferrari with a wide grin. "What do you think of my new car?"
Jay looked disapproving. "You just got your insurance money, and you spent it on a Ferrari? How much did it cost?"
"Two hundred and thirty grand."
Independent dealers charged extra, but they also had the advantage of letting you drive the car away immediately.
If I had gone to the official dealership, it would have been cheaper but probably with a long waiting list.
"Are you kidding me, Jake? You just blew 23% of your mother's life insurance on a damn car?!" Jay said incredulously, already starting to get irritated.
"No," I denied his math. "I bought you a watch, earrings for Gloria, and some other gifts for the family. I spent 40% of the insurance money."
"You did what???" he yelled.
"Ay, Jake! Mira, you look like a celebrity! Like a movie star arriving at a premiere!" Gloria exclaimed, taking the opposite stance from Jay when she saw the car.
"Come here, mamá Gloria, I have a gift for you." I showed her a box.
"Huh." She came closer, and I opened it, revealing a beautiful pair of diamond earrings.
"They're gorgeous, Jake," she hugged me. "See, Jay," Gloria said as she put the earrings on and showed them off to my uncle, "I didn't raise him wrong. He remembers his mamá."
"Gloria!" Jay continued exasperated. "He spent almost half of his money!"
"Don't be so grumpy, Uncle Jay," I stepped closer and showed him the Rolex Day-Date I had bought for him. "See?" I helped him put it on his wrist. "It suits you."
He put his hand on his face. "I'm happy you thought about me, but… how much?"
"Twenty grand."
He took a deep breath. "A twenty-thousand-dollar watch… but Jake, you need to understand money. You can't spend like that."
"Jaay, don't be so hard on Jake. He can live here as long as he wants, he has his dad, he can learn in the future. Let him have some fun," Gloria said, already checking herself in the mirror with her new earrings.
"Come on, Uncle Jay, I know what I'm doing. Let's take a ride." I tossed him the keys.
He grumbled again but got in the car, while I sat in the passenger seat.
As he entered, he frowned. "Why does this car smell like cigarettes? Are you smoking too?"
