Chapter 1: The First Death

Eleven years had passed since the night the village burned.

The forest had changed.

Trees had grown thicker, roots twisting deep into the earth. Rivers had shifted their paths, and new wildlife filled the valleys.

But the girl who walked through the forest had not changed much.

Akira moved quietly between the trees, her bare feet barely making a sound against the ground.

Animals followed her like shadows.

A fox trotted beside her.

Two ravens flew above.

Even the wind seemed to guide her path.

She had grown taller now. Her hair reached past her shoulders, and her eyes carried a strange calmness that no child should possess.

For years she had lived alone.

The forest had become her world.

Animals her teachers.

Nature her companion.

But lately… something had begun to change.

Akira stopped walking.

Her head tilted slightly.

She could feel it again.

A strange sensation inside her chest.

Not pain.

Not hunger.

Something colder.

Something deeper.

Ahead, the sound of footsteps broke the quiet forest.

Three men stepped into the clearing.

Hunters.

Their clothes were worn, their faces rough from travel.

One of them noticed her immediately.

"Well, look at that," the tallest man said with a crooked grin. "A lost girl."

The others laughed.

Akira watched them silently.

The fox beside her growled softly.

The hunters approached slowly.

"You shouldn't be wandering out here alone," another man said. "It's dangerous."

Akira blinked.

"Dangerous?"

"Yes," the first man said, kneeling slightly so he could meet her eyes. "Wild animals live in these woods."

For a moment, Akira seemed confused.

Then she looked around.

Birds perched quietly on branches.

The fox pressed closer to her leg.

A snake moved through the grass nearby.

"They're not dangerous," she said softly.

The men exchanged glances.

The tallest one laughed.

"You're a strange kid."

His hand suddenly shot forward, grabbing Akira's arm.

"Come with us."

The fox snarled and lunged.

One of the hunters kicked it aside violently.

The small animal crashed into a tree and didn't move again.

Akira's eyes slowly turned toward it.

The forest became silent.

"Let go," she said quietly.

The man tightened his grip.

"No."

Something inside her chest shifted.

The strange cold feeling returned.

But this time… it grew stronger.

Akira felt the life around her.

The birds.

The trees.

The hunters.

Everything had a presence.

A pulse.

A fragile thread connecting them to existence.

And suddenly…

She understood something.

Those threads could break.

Akira raised her hand slowly.

The hunter holding her arm frowned.

"What are you—"

He never finished the sentence.

His body froze.

His eyes widened.

Then he collapsed.

Dead.

The other two men stared in horror.

"What did you do?!"

Akira looked down at the body.

Her expression remained calm.

"I stopped his life."

The remaining hunters stepped back.

Fear filled their faces.

One of them raised his bow with shaking hands.

"You monster!"

The arrow flew toward her.

But before it could reach her…

The man's body suddenly collapsed as well.

His heart stopped instantly.

The last hunter screamed and ran.

Akira watched him disappear into the trees.

She didn't chase him.

Instead, she slowly walked toward the fox.

The small animal lay motionless.

Akira knelt beside it.

Her hand touched its fur gently.

But the thread of life she had felt earlier was gone.

She closed her eyes.

"I understand now."

The cold power inside her pulsed quietly.

This new ability had a name.

Thanatokinesis.

The control of death.

Akira stood up.

The forest wind moved softly around her.

Birds returned to the branches.

Animals approached cautiously again.

They didn't fear her.

But something had changed.

For the first time…

Akira had killed without animals.

Without snakes.

Without the forest.

She had done it herself.

And far away, beneath the same sky…

Another girl felt the shift in the world.

Himiko opened her eyes slowly.

She sat alone in a ruined temple.

Candles flickered around her.

She smiled faintly.

"So you've awakened something new…"

The wind carried the distant echo of death.

Himiko stood and looked toward the horizon.

"Interesting."

Her voice was quiet.

"But you're still learning."

The candles around her suddenly flickered into darkness.

"And I am watching."
