"We broke up after that."
Serena Stanton didn't even look up, her eyes focused intently on the Persian cat on her lap. "The relationship broke down beyond repair."
Rachel Sinclair stared at her in shock, "Broke down beyond repair? Was it really that bad?"
Serena glanced up, a gentle, wry smile appearing on her lips, "Even more serious than a frog insisting it's not a toad."
"Yeah, that does sound pretty serious."
Rachel nodded, then picked up another palmier and popped it in her mouth, chewing slowly. "When I went home today, I heard the neighborhood gossipy uncle say that a lawyer helped their client win a divorce case, and the ex-husband got nothing in the settlement. Then, out of spite, that ex-husband hired people to ambush the lawyer and beat him into the hospital."
She paused, tilting her head to look at Serena. "Your profession is pretty dangerous too. If you run into some petty guy with a vengeful streak, it's a one-way ticket to a seven-day tour of the hospital."
