The alleyway smelled of damp brick and decay, the narrow passage forcing them into a single-file run. Daniel led, Kieran a few steps ahead, scouting for danger. Aisha's lungs burned, her mind spinning with fear and adrenaline.
"Split up!" Kieran hissed suddenly, jerking his head toward a side entrance. "It'll throw them off."
Daniel hesitated. "Split up? Are you insane?!"
"There's no time to argue!" Kieran snapped. "Do it!"
Before Daniel could protest further, Kieran disappeared into a shadowed doorway. Reluctantly, Daniel grabbed Aisha's hand and veered left, ducking behind a stack of rusted crates. Their pursuers—voices harsh, heavy, echoing—were closer now.
Aisha's heart pounded against her ribs. "Do you think Kieran… knows what he's doing?" she whispered.
Daniel tightened his grip. "He has to. We don't have any other choice."
From above, a single flashlight beam cut through the darkness, sweeping past them. The beam lingered on the crates, then moved on, narrowly missing them. Daniel pressed Aisha closer to the wall, holding his breath.
"Move on my signal," Kieran's voice echoed softly from the shadows. "Three… two… one…"
They bolted. Crates scraped, gravel crunched underfoot, and the distant shouts of their pursuers grew frantic. Every instinct screamed at them to keep running, to not look back.
Suddenly, a figure blocked their path—a tall man in dark clothing, face hidden by a mask. His hand shot out, grabbing Daniel's arm.
"Let go!" Daniel shouted, twisting and pushing with all his strength.
Aisha felt panic rise, but Kieran appeared in an instant, striking the masked man with a precision blow that sent him sprawling.
"Go! NOW!" Kieran yelled.
They ran, hearts hammering, until the alley opened into a deserted street. For a moment, they slowed, gasping for air, shadows stretching long under the pale streetlights.
Daniel glanced at Kieran. "Who… who are you really?"
Kieran's eyes, sharp and unreadable, met his. "Someone who's been running from the same people you just met. And if we survive tonight… I'll tell you everything."
Aisha shivered. "Tonight isn't over yet, is it?"
Kieran shook his head. "No. Not by a long shot."
And somewhere in the darkness, the sound of boots echoed again. They weren't safe. Not yet.
