My hand trembled as I lifted it, my palm coming down against her cheek in a light slap, more a plea than an attempt to hurt her. Her skin felt wrong beneath my fingers, too cold, too still. "Wake up," I begged, my voice breaking as I said her name again. "Tessa. Please."
Nothing.
She didn't flinch. Didn't groan. Didn't even breathe differently.
A sharp panic tore through my chest. I leaned down instinctively, my movements frantic, my forehead pressing against hers as if closeness alone could will her back. Her lashes rested against her cheeks, unmoving, cruelly peaceful, like she had simply decided to leave me here alone.
