Chapter 19 - Dreams fade. Bond remains.

Sonavr (Aldran valemount)

"A sword..."

A tall sword stands planted in the stone floor of an old tomb. Soft light falls from high windows above, touching the blade and making it stand out in the shadows. The sword is worn and dark, covered with dust and moss, but it remains straight and unmoving.

Around it, stone statues line the walls, their faces calm and silent. Dust and moss cover the floor, and the air feels still, as if the place has been untouched for a long time. No sounds or movement. Nothing.

The sword waits there alone, at the center of the hall, as if it was left for someone yet to come.

"But for whom?", sonvar asked a question that was wrapped in both, honesty and curiosity.

"Child", a voice echoed, piercing and sharp. "You have finally found me".

Sonavr spun, behind him, a figure in black robe stood. Hands clasped.

"Who are you?", sonavr asked, suddenly realising he was not at home. No. Far from it.

"I was waiting for you prince", he took a step forward. Hands in air. "You are Irene and jemriah's son are you not?"

"That is... True...yes", sonavr said. "Where am I?"

"I have questions of my own", the hooded figure said. "But I have waited for a long time, longer than you".

"I am not sure i understand", sonavr said. Am I dreaming? Sonavr thought...

"Three questions. Answer them for me", he clasped his hands again as if to plead. "If you answer mine, I will answer yours. Fill your curiosity and all that?"

I for sure am dreaming...

But where even am I?

Who is this man?

"Child?", another step forward. "Are you listening?"

Sonavr smiled. "Three questions then. Ask yours. Be quick!"

"Does blood of a light elf runs in your veins?"

"I guess so... Since my mother is one, apparently".

"Very well", his voice now filled with excitement. "Are you bound by oath of aegis?"

"No, I would think... I know very little about it but I would say no".

Sonavr couldn't see that man's face but he could swear by aravan that the man was smiling.

"Very well. Have you seen a tomb before?"

"What? How is that - no... I haven't seen one...can I ask why?"

"A pity. A tomb of an old god is close to your home. In aravan forest".

Sonavr guffawed. "I went with brumen there... nothing was there except for some elks or sabertooth. The night my uncle disappeared, my curiosity was piqued. We both went there and rounded the forest twice. Twice! And what we found was disappointment of all the rumours that was spread", sonavr sighed. "Brumen was right. People spread baseless rumours".

"How is that possible?", The man was confused.

"That's three questions. Actually four since you asked about my parents too", sonavr shrugged. "Now answer mine".

"Ask away child".

"Who are you?"

"I am a demigod".

"What?"

"Yes".

"Are you mocking me?"

"I am not... child. I cannot lie".

"Where am I?"

"Aegis reach. High seat of king kaisran. The capital of sumaka".

"How am I in Capital?"

"I have used a fraction of my ability to call upon you. All that I could muster anyway".

"That wasn't a question..."

"To me it was", the man said. "Now listen... Hald-"

The scene before Sonavr shattered.

Suddenly, he was floating through a rippling ocean, the water pressing in from all sides. He was drowning...his breath nearly gone, when a violent force wrenched him upward.

He gasped and sat up.

Sonavr was in his room, in his home at Sover. Sweat clung to his skin as he dragged in air, his heart still pounding from the depths.

Irene

"In his room", jemriah said. "Completely drunk. Thank the old gods that I sent fronn and Iken after him".

"We need to talk to him", Irene said. She was worried about both her son and husband. Jemriah was acting differently since jorath disappeared. They were worried about him, sent fronn to his kingdom and the news they recieved wasn't of what they wanted to hear. Jorath was not there. Where was he then?

"was there a need to tell him?", Irene asked. "Why couldn't you wait?"

Jemriah paced around their solar, frowning.

He seemed confused and agitated. Irene couldn't help but notice that this time he was acting very different. Sonavr, of course has thrown tantrums before, it was nothing new. So... why was he being this disturbed? The answer came to Irene before she could even question it. Jorath had disappeared, and their son was struggling.

"Irene... I beg for your forgiveness", jemriah said. "I hid something that I shouldn't have. Not from you of all people".

"What is it?", Irene demanded, worried.

Jemriah drew back the sleeve of his blue tunic. A thin black chain lay against his forearm, glowing dim light. It was easy to miss at a glance...but once seen, it lingered, wrong in a way the eye could not forget.

"What is that jer?", Irene asked, troubled in a way she didn't understand.

"Dragmia, sword of Aravan...", jemriah said, not meeting her eyes. "The old god tricked me. He was the one who made jorath disappear... Irene, I am sure of it..."

Irene could not believe a word that left her husband's mouth. She stood there, trembling despite herself. Old god? and a sword? Jemriah had sworn this would never happen again. Yet the oath lay broken infront of her eyes.

"Jer you..."

Jemriah strode and embraced her, suddenly Irene found herself crying. Jemriah cupped her face in his palms.

"I never meant for this," Jemriah said.

"Jorath forced my hand. He said Father was coming...to claim the power of the tomb. If I did nothing…" He faltered.

"I was afraid he would take everything from me again. That time, you. This time, both you and our son."

His voice dropped."If that had happened, I do not think I could have lived with what remained of myself."

"So please... Irene. I beg of you. Do not cry", voice low and shaking, he grabbed her in another embrace. "No matter what anyone says, I made right choice marrying you. No matter how much my son stays angry with me, I love him with all my heart. Both him and you".

"We should tell him", Irene found herself saying. "He is ready, I think. Even if he is not, we shouldn't leave him in dark. He deserves to know the truth. He should know everything".

"Now more than ever", jemriah said. "Jorath is missing and Aravan has told me that someone is going to attack the village. We must be prepared and he should too".

Irene broke the embrace and looked at him.

"Don't worry", jemriah said, smiling. "I have a feeling this sword will protect me. Not only me but my family. We are going to be alright".
