Chapter 1 - A Fitting End

The wind howled in the man's ears

His long black hair streaming in the gale behind his head

His emotionless face was pointed towards his lap and his shoulders curled forward as he slumped.

His hands hanging over his knees hanging over the cold metal edge of the slightly swaying bridge.

His eyes were focused on the gap between his legs where the river flowed beneath

Dozens of meters beneath

A fall from this height would be lethal…

'That's the point',

The man thought

And he kept thinking

About the meaninglessness of life

Of his life especially

No kids, no wife, no worthwhile friends

He had family but not any that meant anything to him

He wasn't sad. Just tired. Exhausted even

Who wouldn't be? Getting up everyday to go work. To go do something while others lived comfortably based off things they got lucky off of. Rich loving parents, good genetics that gave them good looks or athleticism.

He wasn't envious

He was far too tired for that

He simply wondered if his life would've had more purpose if he had been blessed like others had

He also considered the possibility that he was being weak. He had two working legs, two working arms, could see and hear. He ate everyday. What more could you ask for?

If he was weak which meant that he had the possibility to grow and maybe then he would feel better, did it change anything?

It didn't change how he felt, or gave him purpose enough to change, and even if it did his life would end someday and his life would be irrelevant. A small hiccup in the lifetime of humanity and blink in the lifetime of the cosmos.

'It's meaningless now' he thought. Cutting of the rant.

He slowly stood up on the edge and stared silently

He wasn't steeling himself

He didn't have to

He was just observing internally

His left foot rose and stopped himself over the edge

Did he have anything left to say? To think? …

He leaned forward and fell

'This wind feels nice.. maybe I should've had that tres leches from that one restaurant one more time'

His lips curled upward slightly

Which was really downward considering the way he was falling

A crunch was heard before a splash

A few seconds later his body rose from the depths of the river

As it floated peacefully with the frigid current a second splat was heard

On the forehead of the man's corpse a white brown and black substance flowed silently. Dripping off his eyebrow.

Overhead an eagle cawed. Flying off into the clouds
