I stared at the timer in my hand, then looked back at Dante. It had been a little over five minutes since he'd hit the ground—sprawled out on the floor, arms and legs twisted at awkward angles, neck turned to one side, mouth wide open, tongue hanging loosely from the roof of his mouth.
I knew better than to go near him, even in this state. He looked dead, but with Dante, he could still snap.
He was taking longer than usual. Normally, within a minute of being injected, he'd come back to his senses. But right now, I couldn't even tell what the hell was going on.
I glanced at the label on the vial to double-check that it was the right one.
It was. So why the fuck wasn't he waking up?
I stood, taking cautious steps toward him. With one leg stretched out, I nudged his hand with my foot.
"Hey, man," I mumbled, giving his arm a firmer kick when he didn't move. "Will you quit playing around? This usually takes a minute."
