Chapter 78 - The Mirror Lake

The claws from the black mist scratched deep lines in the stone door behind us.

The sound was awful, like nails on bone. We didn't stop to look. We ran down the new tunnel as fast as we could.

My legs burned. My lungs hurt. But I kept going.

The air got colder with every step. Wet too. Like we were going deeper and deeper under the mountain.

The blue flames on the walls flickered. They looked nervous, dancing left and right.

After what felt like hours, the tunnel opened wide.

We stopped at the edge, in front of us was the biggest cave yet, in the middle sat a lake. The water was so still it looked like glass. A perfect mirror. Not one ripple.

The ceiling was high. Sharp rocks hung down like teeth. Water dripped from them. Plink. Plink. Plink.

The sound echoed, we walked closer. Our reflections stared up from the water.

Me. Ezra. Helena. Luca. Marcus.

But something felt wrong right away. I lifted my hand. My reflection didn't, it just watched me. Eyes steady.
