I froze completely. I hadn't slept yet; it was the sound of footsteps that made me quickly put away the talisman and dive under the covers. Then, the whispering startled me nearly into jumping up.
I moved to turn around.
"Don't move, just like this!" she whispered.
The broad back gave a sense of security. But inside, her heart was twisting painfully, filled with sorrow.
At first, she only had a fondness, but day by day, spending time together gradually led her to sink deeper, until the realization hit and she was already beyond saving.
But she also knew he already had a girlfriend. Many nights, she heard him making phone calls, and his tone pressed jealousy upon her.
"I don't know when, but I really fell for you... really liked you..."
"I regret not liking you sooner. If I had, everything might be different."
"I envy her so much..."
She whispered intermittently in my ear.
I listened but dared not utter a sound.
