Chapter 108 - Bug

(T/N: I was sick for a bit and 'dying' in my bed, but I feel better now, so I'm back now.)

Paimon asked, "Doesn't the Shogun have, like, an off switch or something?"

Ei replied, "No. When I created her, I never considered the need to turn her off. Quite the opposite—I had already considered that a future version of myself might want to modify the Shogun's operating rules. That too would be detrimental to eternity."

[Yae Miko: So the Shogun still can't be modified.]

[Ei: Modifying her is extremely difficult. That's why I could only temporarily disable certain functions.]

[Paimon: You were worried about future regrets. But what if the future regret turns out to be the right thing? What then?]

[Ei: That would be very difficult to handle.]

Lumine observed, "You're just as strict with yourself."

Ei continued, "That's why the Shogun has a perfect defense mechanism against rule modifications. It's an insurance policy for handling unexpected situations."

"For now, until I've clarified the form eternity should take, temporarily disabling certain functions is more effective than directly modifying the puppet's rules."

Paimon had a realization. "Then I think I get it! The thunderstorms off Inazuma's coast acting up—that's also because some of the Shogun's functions were disabled, right?"

Unexpectedly, Ei looked puzzled. "Thunderstorms acting up? This is the first I've heard of it."

So Lumine and Paimon explained the situation with the thunderstorms.

Ei nodded in understanding. "Ah, the thunderstorms you mentioned. I see."

"Operational error. These things happen. I'll adjust the Shogun later and fix it."

[Furina: I understand this! It's like a robot developing a bug. When you set conflicting directives during programming, this kind of thing easily happens.]

[Navia: Robots developing bugs—especially armed robots—is extremely dangerous.]

[Wriothesley: That's why we run repeated tests on every robot before they leave the factory. In recent years, these incidents have become quite rare.]

[Paimon: So these malfunctions used to happen often?]

[Furina: When robots were first deployed on a large scale, it happened frequently. Once, a robot accidentally injured my kitten.]

[Paimon: No wonder Furina knows about bugs!]

Lumine commented, "That's a rather casual excuse."

Feeling awkward under Lumine's gaze, Ei quickly explained, "Don't look at me like that. I've never done this kind of operation before. The Shogun's construction is very complex. Any adjustment inevitably causes problems."

"Yes, that's not an excuse. That's just how it is."

[Navia: Inazuma's Electro Archon is so cute!]

[Paimon: Is that really an appropriate way to describe her?]

[Yae Miko: Of course it is. Ei has always been a very gentle and adorable person.]

[Paimon: The Shogun is imposing.]

[Lumine: But Ei isn't the Shogun.]

Paimon said, "It's fine; don't worry about it as long as it can be resolved."

Lumine then asked, "Have you made progress on your thoughts about eternity?"

Ei shook her head. "Still the same. Though I've seen the direction of progress, the contradiction remains."

"But no need to rush. If I'm not careful enough, if I only seek conclusions for the sake of reaching conclusions, that would be putting the cart before the horse."

Lumine suggested, "How about taking a walk with us? Clear your head?"

Paimon added, "Once everyone sees that the Shogun is healthy, all the speculation and rumors outside will collapse on their own."

"Besides, if you change your surroundings, change your mood, you might have new insights."

Ei asked, "You mean... leave the Plane of Euthymia?"

Lumine nodded. "It might be beneficial for everyone. Besides, it's been a long time since you've been outside, hasn't it?"
